I wonder if the person simply did not know that most threads have multiple pages; that maybe he/she did not see the "next" link or the page number links, and so thought that the screen he/she was on contained all the comments for that thread.

I never thought of that, but yes, that could well be the case (it took me a while to learn the ins and outs of the website as well).
