Annamariah | 20 comments I was wondering if there was some official policy about dubious Kindle editions that are automatically imported from Amazon? (I tried to search for a previous conversation about this topic, but couldn't find any.)

I was looking for a Finnish edition of Dickens's Great Expectations, and came across this one: Suuria Odotuksia - Suomenkielinen Versio - Merkitty: Suomenkielinen Versio - Merkitty At first I thought it was just a stray edition which needs to be combined with the rest, but then I looked at it more closely and realised there are some serious issues with this edition.

First of all, the title. If I back-translate it, it says "Great Expectations - Finnish Version - Marked: Finnish Version". The correct Finnish title would be simply "Suuria odotuksia".

Then there is the blurb or book description, which is in Finnish, but it's total gibberish. It looks like it has been machine translated into Finnish. For example, the protagonist Pip has been translated into "upotuskuvatoiminto", which is a technical term meaning "picture in picture" in tv monitors (acronym PIP).

Amazon has not listed any translator, only editor Mark Hallaq, who appears as an editor on many other Kindle classics in various languages. The blurb makes me fear that the whole book might be machine translated. There are no reviews either on Amazon's own website or here on Goodreads, so I can't say for sure (I am not going to buy it just to check.) I just clicked "look inside" and yes, it is an unreadable machine translation. (I checked, and Google translate actually does a better job than this...)

So, technically speaking this edition does exist, but it is most certainly not a valid translation of Dickens's classic, so I feel uncomfortable combining it with the other editions of the actual book. I think the dubious title and blurb are enough to prevent people from actually buying it.

What to do? Should I just ignore it, combine it with the rest, or delete it?

Combine it. It may not be a high-quality translation, but it is a legitimately published edition.

Annamariah | 20 comments Not a high-quality, not even a low-quality, but a no-quality translation...

I combined the adventures of Upotuskuvatoiminto (PIP) with other Great Expectations.
