A band plays, glasses clink, and four teens sneak into the Mexican desert, the hum of celebration receding behind them.

Crack. Crack. Crack.

Not fireworks―gunshots. The music stops. And Pato, Arbo, Marcos, and Gladys are powerless as the lives they once knew are taken from them.

Then they are seen by the gunmen. They run. Except they have nowhere to go. The narcos responsible for their families' murders have put out a reward for the teens' capture. Staying in Mexico is certain death, but attempting to cross the border through an unforgiving desert may be as deadly as the secrets they are trying to escape...

22%: (view spoiler)[ Oh jeez, this book does not waste time pulling punches! These poor kids. I cannot image being in this kind of situation. I don't think I would be able to keep it together at all.

Marcos is a kind of scarily intense one. I worry about him & whatever secret he is keeping with Sr Ortiz. (hide spoiler)]

54%: (view spoiler)[ I feel like the majority of my commentary is just going to be me going, "wow, I can't believe what these kids are going through." Seriously, how are they keeping it together?

I was starting to hate Marcos for a minute there & I still don't like that he's hiding things but he redeemed himself for a sec there. He Reassures Pato and makes him stop second guessing himself. Classy guy.
