As Bernard says, feet are not to be sniffed at.

And I said "Constantly in the darkness? Where's that at?
If you want me I'll be in the bar"
On the back of a cartoon coaster, In the blue TV screen-light
I drew a map of Canada, Ohhh Canada, With your face sketched on it twice
Ohhh, you're in my blood like holy wine, You taste so bitter and so sweet
Ohhh, I could drink a case of you, darling
And I would still be on my feet, Ohhh, I would still be on my feet
Ohhh, I am a lonely painter, I live in a box of paints
I'm frightened by the devil, And I'm drawn to those ones that ain't afraid
I remember that time you told me, you said, "Love is touching souls"
Surely you touched mine, 'Cause part of you pours out of me
In these lines from time to time
Ohhh, you're in my blood like holy wine, You taste so bitter and so sweet
Ohhh, I could drink a case of you, darling
Still I would be on my feet, I would still be on my feet
I met a woman, She had a mouth like yours
She knew your life, She knew your devils and your deeds
And she said, "Go to him, stay with him if you can? But be prepared to bleed"
Ohhh, but you are in my blood, You're my holy wine ...
You're so bitter, bitter, and so sweet
Ohhh, I could drink a case of you, darling
Still I'd be on my feet, I would still be on my feet
(Joni Mitchell)

She left our home in Dallas
To be a singer in a band
I followed her to Montreal
To a hundred one-night stands
Cause I just can't live without her
And it's driving me insane
But I've found some Southern Comfort here,
'Till I make her mine again
I'm Drinking Canada Dry
Since my woman said goodbye.
Yes I'm up here in the cold and I want to get home,
But I'll settle for high
And as each double goes down,
I toast another lonely town.
This bottles all I can see,
'till she comes back with me
I'm Drinking Canada Dry
I'm like a Northwest Mountie
Can't let her get away
But these smoke filled bars are killing me,
Can't tell the night from day.
I got plastered in Toronto
And I begged her to come back.
Ah, but she said "No, I gotta go."
As I downed one more six pack
I'm Drinking Canada Dry
Since my woman said goodbye.
Yes I'm up here in the cold and I want to get home,
But I'll settle for high
And as each double goes down,
I toast another lonely town.
This bottles all I can see,
'till she comes back with me
I'm Drinking Canada Dry

(Btw, it's 2.45 am and I'm up because there's a dog barking in a garden a couple of streets away. After lying listening for about half an hour, I got up at 1.30, and went to investigate. It's locked out, and there's no way to get into the back garden where it is. One of the neighbours came out and we tried knocking, but the house seems empty. She phoned the police, who wouldn't do anything. She's now going to try the SPCA. It's a wee black spaniel, poor thing. ).

Baby now I'm blind enough to see
I've been drinking whiskey like it's water
But that don't touch the pain you put on me
I was veering for the white line of the shoulder
Faded lights that cast upon the wall
Baby I know we've been getting older
But you're never too old to learn to crawl
I met you with your thumb out in the alley
I know no one ever comes around here no more
Been looking for a peak inside the valley
Been searching for a key outside your door
Been riding high on low expectations
It's like singing loud with no one left to hear
I've been drinking from the well of inspiration
But it's all falling on these wasted ears
Been drinking whiskey like it's water
But that don't touch the pain you put on me
(Margo Price)
Hope the poor wee dog was rescued! Once that barking penetrates, it's almost impossible to get back to sleep.

Just after 3am it stopped barking, so I went out and had a look - there was a police car outside the house, so the neighbour must have tried them again and persuaded them that all was not well when a dog is barking outside an empty house which usually contains a family and three dogs. Where were they? Where were the two other dogs? If I find out, I'll let you know. I'm knackered from lack of sleep this morning.

With a cup of cold coffee from the Station Buffet
On Trains, on Trains, I seem to spend my life on Trains?
See the blue suit Banker in the ticket line
Got an Evening Standard with Playboy hidden behind
On Trains, on Trains, he seems to spend his life on Trains
Time after time, Was I just dreaming?
Did I help you aboard? Full passenger service
Let me help with the door, Sit down, take the weight off your feet
There's a train-load of people I'd like you to meet
On Trains, on Trains we love to spend our lives on Trains
Join the secret world of Trains, Feel the pleasure, touch the pain
Drift into yesterday
Once and again, I was just thinking
We could meet sometime? On the 17.30 where I usually find
My friends at the end of the day
May we pay your fare, lady?
We should like you to stay in our Train
On Trains, you'll have to spend your life on Trains
I hear there's an office party on the 18.05?
You'll be home for Christmas if they take you alive from the Train
Those Trains, we have to spend our lives on Trains
Once and again, I was just thinking
We could meet any time? On number two Platform where I usually find
My friends at the end of the day on Trains, on Trains, on Trains ...
(Ian Anderson)

Reggae train number one, is coming
Roots train number one, is coming
Reggae train number one, is coming
Train number one, is coming
Carrying all righteous people
If you want to get onboard the train
You gotta be righteous
You gotta be clean in thought, word and deed
To get onboard the train
To get onboard the train
To get onboard the train

Song from a station wagon laying foundations on the shadows of overpassing planes
I'm feeling good, at seven o'clock we're gonna drive across the county line
And find Saturday night like an orphan child that the good days left behind
And I'm not sure we can make it stay
Sun's going down and its the end of the day
Me and my friends in the park drinking beer underneath the tree
Lying on your back as the sun goes down, you know it's perfect cause you've got to leave
On a Saturday night in a town like this I forget all my songs about trains
A bar with a jukebox and you on my arm heaven and earth are pretty much the same
And I'm not sure I can make you stay
Sun's going down and its the end of the day
Later on sitting on the roof talking like the night could last all night
Like we are all half crazy and all at least half alright
Sitting on the porch playing Townes Van Zandt play guitar to burn off the hours
'Til we climb the fences at the edge of town and paint our names on the water towers
And I'm not sure we can make them stay
Sun's going down at the end of the day

Doggie bulletin:
After the neighbour persuaded the police to attend , they came round. She heard them banging on the door, but they didn't let her know what happened. The house still looks deserted, but she was going to pop round and knock
anyway. Presumably the dog is safe, and it's just curiosity with us now, but it's very odd.

Going to Plasteredville, Anyville, and Miltown (yaaaay!)
We're on the drug train, have a nice day (thank you)
We're on the drug train, now watch me get on board
I used to know where I was going 'till I got on board the drug train
I'm going to show you how to get on board
You put one foot up
You put another foot up
You put another foot up and you're on board the drug train
Hey people!
All across the snow-capped mountains
Down in the tranquil valleys
Open up that Golden Gate
Don't fall off this drug train now,
Woo hoo the drug train
I see Elvis with your mother on the drug train
Sherlock Holmes looks for clues
There's something to do on the drug train
Sigmund Freud is slipping and sliding
With all of your friends on the drug train.

Blue green water, willows weeping, silver stars
She sings and sighs as the shuttle flies, Through the yarn like a Kerry dancer
Pink and purple, velvet red for a lover's bed
Living north of San Francisco, With a man who built his house alone
Living peaceful in the country
The lights of the Golden Gate will lead her home
She is a spinner, In her hands the wooden wheel turns the wool around
Then around again
A gypsy from Bolinas, Sits and plays the mandolin
Faces smile in the firelight of a foggy night
Living north of San Francisco, Sometimes it's nice to be alone
She says, it's peaceful where she is living
The lights of the Golden Gate will lead her home
You can see the bridges of the city, Hanging in the air by steel and stone
She says, it's peaceful where she's living
The lights of the Golden Gate will lead her home
She is a weaver, Through her hand the bright thread travels
Blue green water, willows weeping, silver stars
She is my sister, The baby born when I was older
Her hands are light, her hair is bright as the summer sun
Living north of San Francisco, Sometimes it's nice to be alone
She says, it's peaceful in the country
The lights of the Golden Gate will lead her home ...
The lights of the Golden Gate will lead her home
(Judy Collins)
(All very odd, isn't it nocheese? To be a family household and have several Dogs but to 'forget' or to 'ignore' one of them like that? I hope it was an one-off thing or a genuine mistake that never happens again)

A time will come when every fig tree
Shall find it's own vine
A time will come when every fig tree
Shall find it's own vine
That's the only solution
To end all these crimes
They took us away from Africa
On a rocking ship
Then brought us to Jamaica
On a heavy heavy dinner ship
So open the gate
So open the gate
Before it's too late
I pray
So open the gate
Before it's too late
I say
(wattie burnett)

And every child deserves to learn
(Tribal war - none of that)
Every man deserves a turn
Like a flame deserve to burn
(Tribal war - we not want no more)
Each and everyone deserves to earn
And every child deserves to learn
(Tribal war - none of that)
'Cause every man deserves a turn
Like Babylon deserves to burn
Man, what happened to us? Geographically they moved us from Africa - we was once happiness pursuers. Now we back stabbing, combatitive and abusive, the African and Arab go at it -they most Muslim, we should be moving in unison; disputes should end.
Bounty hunters in Grape Street get cool again, substandard housing got the young running rampant - wilding for a phantom he can style in. Mask on his face, grabbing his Ruger said "Nobody move, I'll shoot ya"; man you're expiring. Catch 25 and he doesn't like the man inside - black, white pride and Mexican, survive the best he can, strap a shank to his side
Why do we all collide? Why do the young die? Tattoos his chest, it says his enemies don't deserve to breathe.
(Nas & Damian Marley)

But nobody wants to know
'cause when you're down and out and oppressed
You've got to fight your battles from the
Lowest of the low
So keep your distance and take your stance,
'cause this could be your utmost chance.
You've had all night and day to
Consider and pray
You've brought fire on my head and
Now you must pay.
Babylon makes the rules
Babylon makes the rules
Babylon makes the rules
Babylon makes the rules
Where my people suffer...
Take Rastaman culture for instance,
Dem think is political joke,
But we people know better then that,
'cause what keeps us together is
Jah Herb that we smoke
I and I know the truth of it all,
'cause we have smashed our heads
'gainst that wall,
And now I seh we must create a scene,
We must recapture our culture
By any means
(steel pulse)

Then head on south by any means, Thought I might blend in 'round New Orleans
But when the plane got off the ground, I saw your face in a cloud
Saw your tears out on the wing, Don't guess my heart was free to leave
Birmingham would have to wait, For a little later date
And I said I’d see you later, New Orleans
'Cause I knew my rambling ways, Had seen their better days
And suddenly I had a change in dreams
Caught a plane from Birmingham, Back in your arms is where I am
At times we laugh and talk about, The day I did the Birmingham turnaround
Birmingham would have to wait, For a little later date
And I said I’d see you later, New Orleans
'Cause I knew my rambling ways, Had seen their better days
And suddenly I had a change in dreams
Caught a plane from Birmingham, Back in your arms is where I am
At times we laugh and talk about, The day I did the Birmingham turnaround
And now we laugh and talk about, The day I did the Birmingham turnaround
(Keith Whitley)

With a party in his head
And modified Brougham DeVille
And a pair of legs that opened up like butterfly wings
And a mad dog that wouldn't sit still
He went and took up with a Salvation Army band girl
Who played dirty water on a swordfishtrombone
He went to sleep at the bottom of Tenkiller lake
And he said "gee, but it's great to be home"
Well, he came home from the war with a party in his head
And an idea for a fireworks display
And he knew that he'd be ready with a stainless steel machete
And a half a pint of Ballentine's each day
And he holed up in room above a hardware store
Cryin' nothing there but Hollywood tears
He put a spell on some poor little Crutchfield girl
And stayed like that for twenty-seven years
He packed up all his expectations, he lit out for California
With a flyswatter banjo on his knee
With a lucky tiger in his angel hair and Benzedrine for getting there
They found him in a eucalyptus tree
Lieutenant got him a canary bird and skanked her head with every word
Chesterfielded moonbeams in a song
He got twenty years for lovin' her from some Oklahoma governor
Said "everything this Doughboy does is wrong"
Now some say he's doing the obituary mambo
Now some say that he's hanging on the wall
Perhaps this yarn's the only thing that holds this man together
Some say he was never here at all
And some say they saw him down in Birmingham
Sleeping in a boxcar going by
And if you think that you can tell a bigger tale
I swear to God you'd have to tell a lie
(tom waits)

I’ll sing it so softly, it’ll do no one wrong
On Birmingham Sunday the blood ran like wine
And the choirs kept singing of Freedom
That cold autumn morning no eyes saw the sun
And Addie Mae Collins, her number was one
At an old Baptist church there was no need to run
And the choirs kept singing of Freedom
The clouds they were grey and the autumn winds blew
And Denise McNair brought the number to two
The falcon of death was a creature they knew
And the choirs kept singing of Freedom
The church it was crowded, but no one could see
That Cynthia Wesley’s dark number was three
Her prayers and her feelings would shame you and me
And the choirs kept singing of Freedom
Young Carol Robertson entered the door
And the number her killers had given was four
She asked for a blessing but asked for no more
And the choirs kept singing of Freedom
On Birmingham Sunday a noise shook the ground
And people all over the Earth turned around
For no one recalled a more cowardly sound
And the choirs kept singing of Freedom
The men in the forest they once asked of me
How many Blackberries grew in the Blue Sea?
And I asked them right back with a tear in my eye
How many dark ships in the forest?
The Sunday has come and the Sunday has gone
And I can’t do much more than to sing you a song
I’ll sing it so softly, it’ll do no-one wrong
And the choirs keep singing of Freedom
(Joan Baez)

Know that one hand wash the other (so they say)
So, let's join hands my bredren
Make the way for our children (our children, our children)
And their children (their children, their children)
Ensuring that they get life's fair share of, equality..
Doesn't justice stand for all?
Doesn't justice stand for all?
Doesn't justice stand for all mankind?
We find society putting us down
Crowning us, crowning us, crowning us, crowning us
A place of evil, oh, oh
Handsworth means us the black people
Handsworth means us the black people
We're talking now, speaking Jah Jah language!
It's a long, long way we're coming from
To send this message across, across
Its been hidden, forbidden, concealed, unrevealed
Its got to come out In the open that
Babylon is falling!
Babylon is falling!
It was foolish to build it on the sand
Handsworth shall stand, firm - like Jah rock - fighting back
We once beggars are now choosers, no intention to be losers
Striving forward with ambition
And if it takes ammunition
We rebel in Handsworth revolution
(steel pulse)

Tip the scales of justice, Liberty for all
Do you stand for freedom? Do you stand for justice?
Do you stand for anything at all?
We have the power, We have the courage
To make the mighty fall
Hear the voice of reason, Let your hammer fall
You're the judge and jury, Gimme justice, give me justice!
Justice!
When you free the guilty, The innocent remain
Can you hear your conscience? Can you see the pain?
Do you have the mercy? Do you have the passion?
Do you have integrity at all?
We have the power, We have the courage
To make the mighty fall
Hear the voice of reason, Let your hammer fall
You're the judge and jury, Gimme justice, give me justice!
Justice! Gimme justice!
Take the oath of honor, On the Bible swear
Fight for truth and justice, Do you really care?
Will you fight for freedom? Will you fight for justice?
Will you fight for anything at all?
We have the power, We have the courage
To make the mighty fall
Hear the voice of reason, Let your hammer fall
You're the judge and jury, Gimme justice, give me justice!
Justice, Gimme justice ...
(Saxon)

None is crying out for justice
Everyone is crying out for peace, yes
None is crying out for justice
I don't want no peace
I need equal rights and justice
I need equal rights and justice
I need equal rights and justice
Got to get it, equal rights and justice
Everybody want to go to heaven
But nobody want to die (father of the Jesus)
Everybody want to go up to heaven
But none of them, none of them want to die
I don't want no peace
I man need equal rights and justice
I got to get it, equal rights and justice
I really need it, equal rights and justice
Just give me my share, equal rights and justice
(peter tosh)

Wind it up! Equal rights and justice in this time, Wind up!
Wind it up! Equal rights and justice in this time, Wind it up!
Equal rights and justice in this time, Wind it up! Wind it up!
We go around, go around, go around
We go around, go around, Wind it up! go around, go around
Wind it up! go around, go around, go around
(The Prodigy)

Some humans ain't human
Some people ain't kind
You open up their hearts
And here's what you'll find
A few frozen pizzas
Some ice cubes with hair
A broken Popsicle
You don't want to go there
Some humans ain't human
Though they walk like we do
They live and they breathe
Just to turn the old screw
They screw you when you're sleeping
They try to screw you blind
Some humans ain't human
Some people ain't kind
You might go to church
And sit down in a pew
Those humans who ain't human
Could be sittin' right next to you
They talk about your family
They talk about your clothes
When they don't know their own ass
From their own elbows
Jealousy and stupidity
Don't equal harmony
Jealousy and stupidity
Don't equal harmony
Mm Mm
Have you ever noticed
When you're feeling really good
There's always a pigeon
That'll come shit on your hood
Or you're feeling your freedom
And the world's off your back
Some cowboy from Texas
Starts his own war in Iraq
Some humans ain't human
Some people ain't kind
They lie through their teeth
With their head up their behind
You open up their hearts
And here's what you'll find
Some humans ain't human
Some people ain't kind
Mm Mm
John Prine

They never do what you want 'em too.
Cuz people ain't no good.
They're no good on weekends.
When they come out to play.
They're no good for bookends.
Cuz you can't make 'em stay...hey!
People ain't no good.
People ain't no good.
They never do what I think they should.
So people ain't no good.
Yeah people are just a waste.
They're all over the place.
Ya see 'em everywhere ya go.
And I don't like their face.
And people don't like me.
Why I sure don't know.
But even a jerk like you could see.
It's obviously so...so...
They always get some smile.
They always stand like this.
They always tell ya who is what.
Well what I say is this
(the cramps)

Short people got no reason
Short people got no reason to live
They got little hands and little eyes
And they walk around telling great big lies
They got little noses and tiny little teeth
They wear platform shoes on their nasty little feet
Well, I don't want no short people
I don't want no short people
I don't want no short people round here
(Randy Newman)

I never wanted to be human size
So I avoid the crowds and traffic jams
They just remind me of how small I am
Because of this longing in my heart
I'm going to start the growing art
I'm going to grow now and never stop
Think like a mountain, grow to the top
Tall, tall, tall
I want to be tall, tall, tall
As big as a wall, wall, wall
As big as a wall, wall, wall
And if I'm not tall, tall, tall
Then I will grow, grow, grow
Because I'm not tall
Tall, tall, tall, tall
Tall, tall, tall
Tall, tall, tall
I want to be tall, tall, tall
As big as a wall, wall, wall
As big as a wall, wall, wall
And if I'm not tall, tall, tall
Then I will grow, grow, grow
Because I'm not tall
Tall, tall, tall, tall
Tall, tall, tall
With concentration
My size increased
And now I'm fourteen stories high
(At least)
Empire State human
Just a bored kid
I'll go to Egypt to be
The pyramids
(the human league)

Well I talked big yesterday, but boy you oughta see me now
I bragged too long that your love was strong
There'd never be another guy
But you said more when you whispered your goodbye
I was a big man yesterday but boy you oughta see me now
I said that I was through with you
I didn't need you anyhow
I said I didn't need you then
But boy you oughta see me now
Those bragging words that you were mine
Of that there was no doubt
So empty now that half my life's walked out
Half my life left me yesterday
And boy you oughta see me now
If you will just forgive me dear
I'll never break another vow
I broke so many yesterday
And boy you oughta see me now
I couldn't see it yesterday
But now I know it's true
The only thing that made me big was you
I was a big man yesterday but boy you oughta see me now
If you could only see me now
You should see me now

Day I met God, I got so carried away
Not with the vision, but the streaks in his hair
Not with religion, but the size of his knob
The day I met God
The day I met God
It was pissing with rain
And we went
Ooh, ooh, ooh, woo-hoo
Ooh, ooh, ooh, woo-hoo
Day I met God, I got so carried away
Day I met God, I got so carried away
Not with the vision, but the streaks in his hair
Not with the vicars, or the nuns or the priests
The day I met God
The day I met the big boy, yeah
It was pissing with rain
And we went
Ooh, ooh, ooh, woo-hoo
Ooh, ooh, ooh, woo-hoo
(adam and the ants)

I hope you get the letter and I pray
You can make it better down here
I don't mean a big reduction in the price of beer
But all the people you made in your image
See them starving on their feet
'Cause they dont get enough to eat
From God, I can't believe in you
Dear God, sorry to disturb you
But I feel I should be heard loud and clear
We all need a big reduction in amount of tears
And all the people you made in your image
See them marching in the street
'Cause they can't make opinions meet
About God, I can't believe in you
Did you make disease and the diamond blue?
Did you make mankind after we made you?
And the Devil too!

It's about Brian Jones, one of the Rolling Stones.
Where were you when the stars went out?
Where were you when they started to shout?
I saw you alone by the pool,
and all your friends called you a fool.
Godstar, Godstar. Godstar, Godstar. Godstar, Godstar. God.......star.
And you were so beautiful, you were so very special,
I wish I was with you now, I wish I could save you somehow.
Godstar, Godstar. Godstar, Godstar. Godstar, Godstar. God.......star.
(Echoing chorus): Brian, Brian, Brian.
Brian, Brian, Brian.
Godstar, Godstar. Godstar, Godstar. Godstar, Godstar. God.......star.
Where were all your friends that night
as you switched off the final light?
I saw your body in the water
Like a lamb going to the slaughter
And where were all of your laughing friends?
Where were they at the very end?
They started to steal your glory
They never even told your story
Godstar, Godstar. Godstar, Godstar. Godstar, Godstar. God.......star.
(psychic t.v. - it's about......em......umm...brian jones, one of the....erm.....rolling stones!!) :)

This is a right-away letter, I've got to mail it today
Straight to my main inspirer, says urgent from the USA
It's got this heart inside it, the postage is my soul
Contains a message from millions, says "Keith, don't go!"
A thousand guitars wailin', but it ain't quite the same
You've got a knack for sailin'
And it's stamped with your own brand name
We's all sailors, as captain you must know
You bring a message to millions, says Keith don't go
I said "Keith, don't go
Don't take my fun
Keith don't go, Keith don't go
(Nils Lofgren)

Swagger jagger

Staring at me, be what I be
You can't stop looking at me
So get up out my face
You can't stop clicking at me
Writing 'bout me, tweeting 'bout me
I can't stop that's why they gon' be
My swagger's in check
Get on the floor
Get get get on the floor
My swagger's on check
Get on the floor
Get get get on the floor
I got it in check
(cher lloyd - sorry! no ahm no!) :)

Boom-boom acka-lacka lacka-boom
Boom-boom acka-lacka boom-boom
It was a night like this forty million years ago
I lit a cigarette, picked up a monkey skull to go
The sun was spitting fire, the sky was blue as ice
I felt a little tired, so I watched Miami Vice
And walked the dinosaur, I walked the dinosaur
Open the door, get on the floor, Everybody walk the dinosaur
Open the door, get on the floor, Everybody walk the dinosaur
Open the door, get on the floor, Everybody walk the dinosaur
Open the door, get on the floor, Everybody walk the dinosaur
I met you in a cave, you were painting buffalo
I said I'd be your slave, follow wherever you go
That night we split a rattlesnake and danced beneath the stars
You fell asleep, I stayed awake and watched the passing cars
And walked the dinosaur, I walked the dinosaur
Open the door, get on the floor, Everybody walk the dinosaur
Open the door, get on the floor, Everybody walk the dinosaur
Open the door, get on the floor, Everybody walk the dinosaur
Open the door, get on the floor, Everybody walk the dinosaur
One night I dreamed of New York, You and I roasting blue pork
In the Statue of Liberty's torch, Elvis landed in a rocket ship
Healed a couple of lepers and disappeared, But where was his beard?
A shadow from the sky much too big to be a bird
A screaming crashing noise louder than I've ever heard
It looked like two big silver trees that somehow learned to soar
Suddenly a summer breeze and a mighty lion's roar
I killed the dinosaur, I killed the dinosaur
Open the door, get on the floor, Everybody kill the dinosaur
Open the door, get on the floor, Everybody kill the dinosaur
Open the door, get on the floor, Everybody kill the dinosaur
Open the door, get on the floor, Everybody kill the dinosaur
Boom-boom acka-lacka lacka-boom
Boom-boom acka-lacka boom-boom
(Was (Not Was) ;o>)

You walked upon the planet so
Lord of all that you could see
Just a little bit like me
Walking in your footsteps
Walking in your footsteps
Walking in your footsteps
Walking in your footsteps
Hey Mr Dinosaur
You really couldn't ask for more
You were God's favourite creature
But you didn't have a future
Walking in your footsteps
Walking in your footsteps
Walking in your footsteps
Walking in your footsteps
(Police)

In a dark tunnel, blindfolded, It's where you leave your home
And I follow the steps into your future, Like I know what's coming
I follow you like a stray, And your back says I'm looking
Never mind what's ahead, Just don't stop, No, don't stop
Because I'm walking in your footsteps, Covering your tracks down river
I'm walking in your footsteps, Turning dust into diamonds
This road is not your own, It's been covered, It's been chartered so many times
Every single line, every warning sign, Is worn down and forgotten
I follow you like a stray, And your back says I'm looking
Never mind what's ahead, Just don't stop, No, don't stop
Because I'm walking in your footsteps, Covering your tracks down river
I'm walking in your footsteps, Turning dust into diamonds
Turnin' the dust into diamonds, Turnin' turnin'
So never mind what's ahead, Just don't stop, No, don't stop
Because I'm walking in your footsteps, Covering your tracks down river
I'm walking in your footsteps, Turning dust into diamonds
Ohhh, I'm walking in your footsteps, Every single one
Turning dust into diamonds, Turning dust into diamonds
(Shout Out Louds)

He pulls his chain and he pulls it tight
This ain't no lonesome wail, that boy ain't faking
He bites the steel and he claws the ground
He pulls again and he spins around
His eyes are raging and his burning lungs are steaming
He wanna walk in the sun
Feel love like anyone
No one knows that black dog better than I
I said no one knows that black dog better than I
When I see his running I can see me
Teeth in the collar and he's tearing it free
Spit out the leather and the cold studs
That kept you from singing
Run till you're bleeding, run till you're hot
Till the memory of all this you've long since forgot
Run till forever, till the bells of your freedom are ringing
He wanna walk in the sun
Feel love like anyone
No one knows that black dog better than I
I said no one knows that black dog better than I
(Chris Rea)

We ducked inside the doorway, thunder crashing
As majestic bells of bolts struck shadows in the sounds
Seeming to be the chimes of freedom flashing
Flashing for the warriors whose strength is not to fight
Flashing for the refugees on the unarmed road of flight
An' for each an' ev'ry underdog soldier in the night
An' we gazed upon the chimes of freedom flashing.
In the city's melted furnace, unexpectedly we watched
With faces hidden as the walls were tightening
As the echo of the wedding bells before the blowin' rain
Dissolved into the bells of the lightning
Tolling for the rebel, tolling for the rake
Tolling for the luckless, the abandoned an' forsaked
Tolling for the outcast, burnin' constantly at stake
An' we gazed upon the chimes of freedom flashing.
Through the mad mystic hammering of the wild ripping hail
The sky cracked its poems in naked wonder
That the clinging of the church bells blew far into the breeze
Leaving only bells of lightning and its thunder
Striking for the gentle, striking for the kind
Striking for the guardians and protectors of the mind
An' the poet an the painter far behind his rightful time
An' we gazed upon the chimes of freedom flashing.
In the wild cathedral evening the rain unraveled tales
For the disrobed faceless forms of no position
Tolling for the tongues with no place to bring their thoughts
All down in taken-for granted situations
Tolling for the deaf an' blind, tolling for the mute
For the mistreated, mateless mother, the mistitled prostitute
For the misdemeanor outlaw, chased an' cheated by pursuit
An' we gazed upon the chimes of freedom flashing.
Even though a clouds's white curtain in a far-off corner flashed
An' the hypnotic splattered mist was slowly lifting
Electric light still struck like arrows, fired but for the ones
Condemned to drift or else be kept from drifting
Tolling for the searching ones, on their speechless, seeking trail
For the lonesome-hearted lovers with too personal a tale
An' for each unharmfull, gentle soul misplaced inside a jail
An' we gazed upon the chimes of freedom flashing.
Starry-eyed an' laughing as I recall when we were caught
Trapped by no track of hours for they hanged suspended
As we listened one last time an' we watched with one last look
Spellbound an' swallowed 'til the tolling ended
Tolling for the aching whose wounds cannot be nursed
For the countless confused, accused, misused, strung-out ones an' worse
An' for every hung-up person in the whole wide universe
An' we gazed upon the chimes of freedom flashing.

For two long years my head hurt bad
So the doctor checked me and he shook his head
He said, "I'm sorry to tell you but your body's outlived your brain"
He said, "I know this doctor in New York son
And he'll fix you up right with a brand new one"
So the head doctor met me when I stepped down off the train
He said, "We had this bank robber killed last night
His body's shot but his brain's alright
I'll give you a transplant boy, and it'll be okay"
I got the new brain in and I was feeling great
I went right back to Nashville with no headache
But something strange happened when I walked in the bank one day
[Chorus]
I said "Stick 'em up everybody, I'm robbing this place
Drop all of your money in my guitar case
Don't nobody move and don't nobody reach for that door
A lady said, "Why, you're Johnny Cash!"
I said, "No ma'am, I'm the Manhattan Flash
And I am the best bank robber in New York"
[Verse 2]
Now the other night, Roy Acuff called me
He said, "John, I'd like for you to do the Opry"
So I went out on the stage, but I couldn't sing
I got into half a verse of 'bout Walk The Line
And something snapped in that head of mine
I yelled, "Stick 'em up! Gimme your money, watches and rings"
Well I called New York and talked to that brain quack
I said, "Doc, I've got to have my old brain back"
He said, "I'm sorry there Mr. Cash, but I can't do that"
He said, "I put your brain in a chicken last Monday
He singing your songs and making lots of money
And I got him signed to a ten year recording contract"
Now friends, if you see me walking down the street
Remember what your see ain't necessarily me
And if I try to hold you up, don't blame it on mine
But when you got ten bucks that you can blow
You ought to catch that Johnny Chicken Show
He's done fairs and concerts dates all across the line

I'm back on board that '49 Ford in 1956
Long before the sun came up way out in the sticks
The headlight showed a two rut roadway
Back up in the pines
First time I heard Johnny Cash
Sing I Walk The Line
I got my thrill behind the wheel upon my daddy’s lap
Grandpa rode co-pilot with a flashlight and a map
Cane pole out the window it was in the summertime
First time I heard Johnny Cash
Sing I Walk The Line
Johnny Cash:
I keep a close watch on this heart of mine
I keep my eyes wide open all the time
I keep the ends out for the tie that binds
Because you're mine, I Walk The Line
Rodney Crowell:
I never will forget that day,I know the time and place,
Sounded like the whole thing came right down from outer space,
I still can see those headlights and that dashboard in my mind,
The first time I heard Johnny Cash sing I walk the line.
I find it very very easy to be true,
I find myself alone when each day's through,
Yes I'll admit that I'm a fool for you,
Because you're mine, I walk the line
Rodney Crowell:
All these long years later it's still music to my ears
I swear it sounds as good right now as anything I hear
I've seen the Mona Lisa
I've heard Shakespeare read real fine
Just like hearing Johnny Cash
Sing I Walk The Line
Johnny Cash;
As sure as night is dark and day is light
I keep you on my mind both day and night
And happiness I've know proves that it's right
Because you're mine, I Walk The Line
Because you're mine, I Walk The Line
(Rodney Crowell)

Johnny
He’s cruising the night looking for love
He’s looking so mean he’s feeling so tough
Johnny
John John John Johnny
He’s looking so mean he’s feeling so tough
He’s looking so alive
He’s cruising the night looking for love
He’s looking so mean he’s feeling so tough

Many versions.

Me and my husband liked living there
It's been years since the kids have grown
A life of their own left us alone
John and Linda live in Omaha
Joe is somewhere on the road
We lost Davie in the Korean War
I still don't know what for
Don't matter anymore
You know that old trees just grow stronger
And old rivers grow wilder everyday
But old people they just grow lonesome
Waiting for someone to say hello in there
Hello
Me and my husband we don't talk much anymore
He sits and stares through the backdoor screen
And all the news just repeats itself
Like some forgotten dream that we've both seen
Someday I'll go and call up Judy
We worked together at the factory
Ah, but what would I say
When she asks what's new
Say "Nothing what 's with you?"
Nothing much to do
You know that old trees just grow stronger
And old rivers grow wilder everyday
But old people they just grow lonesome
Waiting for someone to say hello in there
Hello
So if you're walking down the street sometime
And you should spot some hollow ancient eye
Don't you pass them by and stare
As if you didn't care say "Hello in there!"
Hello
(John Prine, brilliant as always, but I do like Bette Midler's version)

And what a time it was
It was . . .
A time of innocence
A time of confidences
Long ago . . . it must be . . .
I have a photograph
Preserve your memories
They’re all that’s left you
Simon and Garfunkel

At acting attitudes
Remember ridicule
It should be clear by now
Clear by now
Your words are useless
Full of excuses
False confidence
Someone has used you well
Used you well
I could be wrong
It could be hate
As far as I can see
Clinging desperatley
Imagining pretending
No personality
Dragging on and on and on and on
And on and on and on and on
I think you're slightly late
Slightly late
This person's had enough of usless memories
Always remember
Twisted amenities
Could be wrong
This person's had enough of usless memories

If I could save time in a bottle
The first thing that I'd like to do
Is to save every day till eternity passes away
Just to spend them with you
If I could make days last forever
If words could make wishes come true
I'd save every day like a treasure and then
Again, I would spend them with you
But there never seems to be enough time
To do the things you want to do, once you find them
I've looked around enough to know
That you're the one I want to go through time with
If I had a box just for wishes
And dreams that had never come true
The box would be empty, except for the memory of how
They were answered by you
But there never seems to be enough time
To do the things you want to do, once you find them
I've looked around enough to know
That you're the one I want to go through time with
Jim Croce

What is that you say?
No sense to dwell.
Old, are you ridiculed and fumed away,
No attention paid?
I thought as much.
Yes and the dumb patriots have their say,
Only see their way.
Nothing to sell.
And worse from us, so obvious,
Preposterous, when you think
Of the time that each has spent.
Words heaven sent and truly meant to show
Old, may I sit down here and learn today?
I'll hear all you say.
I won't go away.
(dexy's midnight runners)

That our short little memories
Never seem to learn
The message of history
We keep makin' the same mistakes
Over and over and over and over again
And then we wonder why
We're in the shape we're in
Good ol' boys down at the bar
Peanuts and politics
They think they know it all
They don't know much of nothing
Even if one of them was to read the newspaper
Cover-to-cover
That ain't what's going on
Journalism's dead and gone
Frail grasp on the big picture
Light fading and the fog is getting thicker
It's a frail grasp on the big picture
Dark ages
You my love-drunk friend
All that red wine and candlelight
Soulful conversations
That go on until the dawn
How many times can you tell your story?
How many hangovers can you endure
Just to get some snuggling done?
You're living in a hollow dream
You don't have the slightest notion
What long-term love is all about
All your romantic liasons
Don't deal with eternal questions like
Who left the cap off the freaking toothpaste?
Whose turn to take the garbage out?
Frail grasp on the big picture
You keep on rubbin' that, you're gonna get a blister
It's a frail grasp on the big picture
I've seen it all before
And we pray to our Lord
Who we know is American
He reigns from on high
He speaks to us through middlemen
And he shepherds his flock
We sing out and we praise His name
He supports us in war
He presides over football games
And the right will prevail
All our troubles shall be resolved
We have faith in the Lord
Unless there's money or sex involved
Frail grasp on the big picture
Nobody's calling them for roughing up the pitcher
It's a frail grasp on the big picture
Heaven help us
Frail grasp on the big picture
All waiting for that miracle elixir
Frail grasp on the big picture
I don't wonder anymore
Frail grasp on the big picture
Somebody says, "You brought her here so go ahead and kiss her
Frail grasp on the big picture
Frail grasp on the big picture
Light fading and the fog is getting thicker
It's a frail grasp on the big picture
Frail grasp on the big picture
Frail grasp on the big picture
