Follow The Lyric - & The Game Goes On ...

I believe that somewhere in the darkest night, A candle glows
I believe for everyone that goes astray, Someone will come, To show the way
I believe ... I believe ...
I believe above the storm the smallest prayer, Will still be heard
I believe that someone in the great somewhere, Hears every word
Every time I hear a newborn baby cry, Or touch a leaf, Or see the sky
Then I know why ... I believe ...
Every time I hear a newborn baby cry, Or touch a leaf, Or see the sky
Then I know why ... I believe ... (Why I believe)
(Johnny Cash)

Everybody's worryin' 'bout where they're gonna go
When the whole thing's done
But no one knows for certain
And so it's all the same to me
I think I'll just let the mystery be
Some say once you're gone you're gone forever
And some say you're gonna come back
Some say you rest in the arms of the Saviour
If in sinful ways you lack
Some say that they're comin' back in a garden
Bunch of carrots and little sweet peas
I think I'll just let the mystery be
Everybody's wonderin' what and where they they all came from
Everybody's worryin' 'bout where they're gonna go
When the whole thing's done
But no one knows for certain
And so it's all the same to me
I think I'll just let the mystery be
Some say they're goin' to a place called Glory
And I ain't saying it ain't a fact
But I've heard that I'm on the road to purgatory
And I don't like the sound of that
I believe in love and I live my life accordingly
But I choose to let the mystery be
Everybody is wondering what and where they they all came from
Everybody is worryin' 'bout where they're gonna go
When the whole thing's done
But no one knows for certain
And so it's all the same to me
I think I'll just let the mystery be
I think I'll just let the mystery be
(Iris Dement)

He jumped out the window 'cause he couldn't sit still
Juliet was waiting with a safety net
He said, "Don't bury me 'cause I'm not dead yet"
Why don't you tell me about the mystery dance
I want to know about the mystery dance
Why don't you show me
'Cause I've tried and I've tried, and I'm still mystified
I can't do it anymore and I'm not satisfied
Well, I remember when the lights went out
And I was tryin' to make it look like it was never in doubt
She thought that I knew, and I thought that she knew
So both of us were willing, but we didn't know how to do it
Why don't you tell me about the mystery dance
I want to know about the mystery dance
Why don't you show me
'Cause I've tried and I've tried, and I'm still mystified
I can't do it anymore and I'm not satisfied
Well, I was down under the covers in the middle of the night
Tryin' to discover my left foot from my right
You can see those pictures in any magazine
But what's the use of looking when you don't know what they mean?
(elvis costello)

Laying everybody low with a love song that he made
Finds a streetlight, steps out of the shade ...
Says something like, "You and me, babe, how about it?"
Juliet says, "Hey, it's Romeo, you nearly gave me a heart attack"
He's underneath the window, she's singing, "Hey, la, my boyfriend's back
You shouldn't come around here singing up at people like that
Anyway, what you gonna do about it?"
"Juliet, the dice was loaded from the start
And I bet, and you exploded into my heart
And I forget, I forget the movie song ...
When you gonna realize it was just that the time was wrong, Juliet?"
Come up on different streets, they both were streets of shame
Both dirty, both mean, yes, and the dream was just the same
And I dreamed your dream for you and now your dream is real
How can you look at me as if I was just another one of your deals?
When you can fall for chains of silver you can fall for chains of gold
You can fall for pretty strangers and the promises they hold
You promised me everything, you promised me thick and thin, yeah
Now you just say "oh, Romeo, yeah, you know I used to have a scene with him"
"Juliet, when we made love, you used to cry
You said 'I love you like the stars above, I'll love you till I die'
There's a place for us, you know the movie song ...
When you gonna realize it was just that the time was wrong, Juliet?"
I can't do the talk like they talk on the TV
And I can't do a love song like the way it's meant to be
I can't do everything but I'd do anything for you
I can't do anything except be in love with you
And all I do is miss you and the way we used to be
All I do is keep the beat and bad company
All I do is kiss you through the bars of Orion
Julie, I'd do the stars with you any time
"Juliet, when we made love you used to cry
You said 'I love you like the stars above, I'll love you till I die'
There's a place for us you know the movie song ...
When you gonna realize it was just that the time was wrong, Juliet?"
And a lovestruck Romeo, he sang the streets of serenade
Laying everybody low with a love song that he made
Finds a convenient streetlight, steps out of the shade
He says something like, "You and me, babe, how about it?
You and me, babe, how about it?"
(Dire Straits)

“It takes one to know one,” she smiles
And puts her hands in her back pockets
Bette Davis style
And in comes Romeo, he’s moaning
“You Belong to Me I Believe”
And someone says, “You’re in the wrong place my friend
You better leave”
(Bob Dylan)

'Til Romeo told the lonely girl, "I must take my leave my love."
It was these few words I overheard and thought I would move in
But before I could, the lonely girl had fallen in love again
Oh, poor Romeo, sitting out on his own
Oh, poor Romeo
Romeo he had it rough, the guy you'd like to burn
But everything that Romeo had, you can bet it was well earned
For all his good looks, there were scars that he took
And a lesson to be learned
Never judge lovers by a good looking cover
The lover might be spurned
Oh, poor Romeo, sitting out on his own
Oh, poor Romeo
Oh, poor Romeo, sitting out on his own
Oh poor Romeo
Romeo he liked to put it around, he was everybody's friend
But in the end even Romeo found on no one could he depend
For all of his charms, in someone else's arms
Lonely girl safely lay
When the train came in, it had to leave again
And Romeo pulled away
Oh, poor Romeo, sitting out on his own
Oh poor Romeo
Oh, poor Romeo
Oh, poor Romeo....
(Thin Lizzy)

Gonna buy somethin' I can ride in, Take my girl and meet in the Drive-in
Our love's gonna be written down in history, Just like Romeo and Juliet
I'm gonna buy her pretty presents, Just like the ones in the catalogue
Gonna show her how much I love her, Let her know that one way or the other
Our love's gonna be written down in history, Just like Romeo and Juliet
(Hey, hey, hey) ... (Hey, hey, hey) ...
Right now I'm speculatin', Wonder what tomorrow's gonna really bring?
If I don't find work tomorrow? It's gonna be a lake of sorrow
Our love's gonna be destroyed like a tragedy, Just like Romeo and Juliet
Talk about love and romance, Just wait till I get myself straight
I'm gonna put Romeo's name, Back, back, back on the table
(Hey, hey, hey) ... Romeo and Juliet ...
(Just like Romeo and Juliet) ... Romeo and Juliet
(Just like Romeo and Juliet) ... Romeo and Juliet
(Just like Romeo and Juliet) ... (Just like Romeo and Juliet)
(The Undertones)

Give us a sign if you're with me
Can’t you see that I'm dying to hear you?
Everyone else has lost interest
And I’m all alone In this dream house
Though you're gone
I don't feel like crying
Romeo is calling you
Knock once or twice if you're out there
Send me a message my sweetheart
When I'm out and about I'll be coming to see you
It isn’t easy to live with this matronly face at the window
Try to contact me, if you can see how I'm suffering
Romeo is calling you
Scatter the paper and thimbles
You can take care of the candles
An unplugged radio plays. She is close now
Me and my hand-holding baby walking the floor and the
ceiling
This is the song she dictated this evening.
Romeo is calling you
Romeo is calling you
Mr MacManus again

He's over on 18th Street as usual
Looking so hard against the hood of his car
Puttin' out a cigarette in his hand
And for all the Pachucos at the Pumps at Romero's Paint and Body
They all seein' how far they can spit, Well, it was just another night
And now they're huddled in the brake lights of a '58 Bel Air
And listenin' how Romeo killed a Sheriff with his knife
And they all jump when they hear the sirens, but Romeo just laughs
All the racket in the world ain't never gonna save that copper's ass
He ain't never gonna see another Summer-time for gunnin' down my brother
And leavin' him like a dog beneath a car without his knife
Romeo says: "hey man, gimme a cigarette" and they all reach for their pack
And Frankie lights it for him and pats him on the back
And throws a bottle at a Milk Truck and, as it breaks, he grabs his nuts
They all know they could be just like Romeo if they only had the guts
Romeo is bleeding, but nobody can tell
Sings along with the radio with a bullet in his chest
And he combs back his fenders and they all agree it's clear
And that everything is cool now that Romeo's here
Romeo is bleeding, he winces now and then
He leans against the car door, feels the blood in his shoes
And someone's cryin' at the 5 Points in the phone booth by the store
Romeo starts his engines and wipes the blood of the door
And he brodys through the signal with the radio full blast
Leavin' the boys there hikin' up their chinos
And then they all try to stand like Romeo beneath the moon cut like a sickle
And they're talkin' now in Spanish all about their hero
Romeo is bleeding as he gives the man his ticket
He climbs the Balcony at the Movies
And he'll die without a whimper like every hero's dream
Like an angel with a bullet and with Cagney on the screen
And Romeo is bleeding, Romeo is bleeding, hey man
Romeo is bleeding, hey man, Romeo is bleeding, hey man
Romeo is bleeding ...
(Tom Waits)

See the stars of the silver screen
Now everyone's got the greasepaint on
Looking to be seen
Chorus:
The satellite picture's coming round, coming round
The satellite picture's coming round
Stop for a while, give a big smile
For the satellite picture's coming round
Walking the dog, out for a jog
It's the wonder of the age
Give a glance, take a stance, do a dance, grab your chance
All the world's a stage
Like Yankee Doodle Cagney
You can growl, You dirty rat
If a magic trick makes you tick
You'll end it, Just like that
With your arms stretched high to the sky
You go down on one knee and sing, Mammy
And when the world's in tears you'll hear the cheers
As they cry, Play it again Sammy
When the cameras roll it's all action
You'll be the new sensation
As you smile and you wave, you rant and you rave
For your Oscar nomination
And then you retire to the wee room
You're sittin' on the throne
Peace and quiet from Hollywood
You think you are alone – but
The satellite picture's coming round, coming round
The satellite picture's coming round
Stop for a while, give a big smile
For the satellite picture's coming round
(Ian Walker)

Pappy hailed from Timbuktu
There's one thing I recall, that I hated most of all
Was that little green shed, our Loo
It had a Cedar shingle roof, I swear that was the truth
Hinges all rusting and corroding
Twas a ghastly shade of green, the worst you've ever seen
It stood there at the bottom of the garden
Well one day when I was six, I was chopping at some sticks
When a nasty little gleam came to my eye
I ran down to the John and shoved it off the lawn
Into the river flowing gently by
Soon my Pappy called my name, he yelled "Hey, what's ya game?
Why did you shove our privy in the drink?"
Well, then I shook with fear and shed a little tear
I said ... "it wasn't me?!" ... I didn't think
It had a Cedar shingle roof, I swear that was the truth
Hinges all rusting and corroding
Twas a ghastly shade of green, the worst you've ever seen
It stood there at the bottom of the garden
Then Pappy told to me how George Washington felled the tree
Then he went and owned up straight away
And because he told the truth, that honest youth foresooth
His Pappy didn't punish him that day
Well, me being a little green, I thought I'd best come clean
So I told my Pappy how I sank that shack
Well, with a rebel cry of glee he hauled me o'er his knee
Proceeded to wop me blue and black
It had a Cedar shingle roof, I swear that was the truth
Hinges all rusting and corroding
Twas a ghastly shade of green, the worst you've ever seen
It stood there at the bottom of the garden
Since I hadn't told a lie, I asked my Pappy why?
He sat there and he answered with a frown ...
"Well, George Washington's Pappy, he, wasn't sitting in the tree
When that little b*****d went and chopped it down!"
(The Corries)

All the others are in the past
Jump to your feet, let us catch your eye
We're the green fuz
We're not too fast, we're not too slow
Come along baby to see where we go
Jump to your feet, let us catch your eye
We're the green fuz
We're coming fast and I'll tell you why
Jump to your feet, let us catch your eye
Here we come baby and you'd better run
We're the green fuz
(the cramps)

Walkin' down the street
We get the funniest looks from
Everyone we meet
Hey, hey, we're the Monkees
And people say we monkey around
But we're too busy singing
To put anybody down
We go wherever we want to
Do what we like to do
We don't have time to get restless
There's always something new
Hey, hey, we're the Monkees
And people say we monkey around
But we're too busy singing
To put anybody down
We're just tryin' to be friendly
Come and watch us sing and play
We're the young generation
And we've got something to say, oh
Any time
Or anywhere
Just look over your shoulder
Guess who'll be standing there?
Hey, hey, we're the Monkees
And people say we monkey around
But we're too busy singing
To put anybody down
Whaaa, one time!
Hey, hey, we're the Monkees
And people say we monkey around
But we're too busy singing
To put anybody down
We're just tryin' to be friendly
Come and watch us sing and play
We're the young generation
And we've got something to say
Hey, hey, we're the Monkees
Hey, hey, we're the Monkees
(Guess who?)

One thing always leads to another
In life and love they say
You got too close and now
That boy's gonna make you rue the day
You grab his ankles when he flies
You catch him when he falls
Here's the thing to say to him
Before you climb the walls:
Shame, shame on you, you Bad Monkey
One day you're up, next day you're down
Why do you monkey my heart around
Shame, shame on you, you Bad Monkey
I'm not coming on the roller coaster with you
I see your nerves are jangled, honey
You're a walking emotional wreck
He's dealing you some jokers
Off the bottom of the deck
He goes from joy to suicide
About 15 times a day
Here's the thing to scream out loud
From 100 miles away
Shame, shame on you, you Bad Monkey
One day you're up, next day you're down
Why do you monkey my heart around
Shame, shame on you, you Bad Monkey
I'm not coming on the roller coaster with you
(Richard Thompson)

You wonder why your life passes before you?
In the dark you slip into a coma
You crash the car, you've gone too far
Policemen flash for your credentials
You go too fast but you're not careful
So you drive back home confused and alone
She's a man but when you get down to it
She says sure you can, you wanna make love to her
She says ... "My place or yours?" ... drinks are poured
Like you could dance forever - so you dance together
To make a move now seems essential
Someone stares at you, the club you go to has potential
To replace the other who just rediscovered her mother
'Cause you think you might need a lover
And, ohhh my God, look you have just discovered
The way that one thing can lead to another
And, ohhh my God, look you have just discovered
The way that one thing can lead to another
Yeah, ohhh yeah, ohhh yeah, it can lead to another
What's going on tonight? - you think you might discover
So you pour a drink and start to think about another
You get the sack when you turn up late
You think get this pressure off my back
With the deadlines missed, your boss gets pissed
You fail your test, You're so depressed
And the job begins to suffer ... and the job begins to suffer ...
And, ohhh my God, look you have just discovered
The way that one thing can lead to another
And, ohhh my God, look you have just discovered
The way that one thing can lead to another
Yeah, ohhh yeah, ohhh yeah, one thing leads to another
Yeah, ohhh yeah, ohhh yeah, it can lead to another
And the job begins to suffer for the lover you lost
'Cause you care such a lot about the job you've got
You couldn't care less, you're in such a mess and life's tougher
You're feeling older, the house is colder, with her mother
Then your lover says she's moving out ... and moving back in ...
You get a job, you like the job
And isn't it funny? - how one thing leads to another?
And, ohhh my God, look you have just discovered
The way that one thing can lead to another
And, ohhh my God, look you have just discovered
The way that one thing can lead to another
Yeah, ohhh yeah, ohhh yeah, one thing leads to another
Yeah, ohhh yeah, ohhh yeah, it can lead to another
(Pet Shop Boys)

Tell me friend how long it's been
Since I've been seeing you
We had some good times and some long talks
Your favourite subject love
You're experienced and I'm not
I think we've talked enough
Yes, I believe we've talked enough
I need someone to love me
I need someone to care
Stop this feeling above me
Know girl, the time is right
It's delivery night, it's delivery night
(Nils Lofgren)

Her shoulders flung forward
Her lips in a purse
She talks like the beauty that she never was
Of the fabulous wild nights that she never has
In a certain light he looked like Elvis
In a certain way he feels like Jesus
Everyone dreams of him just as they can
But he's only the humble Delivery Man
Geraldine blushes and brushes away
The cigarette ashes that Vivian scatters
Stares out of the window at the things that she says
While gossip within her competes with the widow
Ever since he's gone, she feels like crying all the time
She knows for sure Vivian is lying
Now she has a daughter to raise as she can
She just wouldn't trust that Delivery Man
Ivy puts down the ghost story she's reading
Looks up at that face on the wall
Thinking about how her father lay bleeding
Shot in the back 'cause orders were misleading
And how a flag and a medal don't have any meaning
On the 5th of July as they tore down the fair
And he'd seen all the local girls who were worth kissing
With the smell of the gunpowder still in the air
They noticed that Abel and Ivy were missing
In a certain light he looked like Elvis
In a certain way he seemed like Jesus
He said "Why can't we be kind to me like you were meant to be?
When they let me out, I had a brand new identity
Now everyone dreams of me just as they can
I want to be your Delivery Man"
(Elvis Costello)

Ohhh darling, why'd you talk so fast? Another evening just flew past tonight
And now the daybreak's coming in, And I can't win and it ain't right
You tell me all you've done and seen, And all the places you have been without me
Well, I don't really want to know, But I'll stay quiet and then I'll go
And you won't have no cause to think about me
There's a guy works down the chip shop swears he's Elvis
Just like you swore to me that you'd be true
There's a guy works down the chip shop swears he's Elvis
But he's a liar and I'm not sure about you
Ohhh, darling, you're so popular, You were the best thing new in Hicksville
With your mohair suits and foreign shoes, News is you changed your pick-up for a Seville
And now I'm lying here alone, 'Cos you're out there on the phone to some star in New York
I can hear you laughing now, And I can't help feeling that somehow
You don't mean anything you say at all
There's a guy works down the chip shop swears he's Elvis
Just like you swore to me that you'd be true
There's a guy works down the chip shop swears he's Elvis
But he's a liar and I'm not sure about you
There's a guy works down the chip shop swears he's Elvis
Just like you swore to me that you'd be true
There's a guy works down the chip shop swears he's Elvis
But he's a liar and I'm not sure about you
I said he's a liar and I'm not sure about you
I said he's a liar and I'm not sure about you
He's a liar and I'm not sure about you
(Kirsty MacColl)

Suddenly I thought I died of a broken heart
When I heard the announcer say
(Ladies and gentlemen, the king is dead
Elvis Presley just died in a hospital in Memphis, Tennessee
42 Years on this planet, but he'll be here forever)
I remember Elvis Presley
Lord, how I love to hear him sing!
So I'll adore him just forever
For he's the one and only king
I remember Elvis Presley
And he won't ever set me free
Like he was singing "Now or never"
He's just a golden memory
(danny mirror) wow!

Came from Memphis, Tennessee.
All-white black boy, loved his mom,
Packed a rod, popped Valium,
Drove a lorry, became King,
Made some records, learned to sing,
Got ripped off by Uncle Sam,
Joined the army, became a man,
Made some films then went to bed,
Ate loads of junk-food, dropped down dead.
TV flash announcers say:
"Elvis the First has passed away."
Millions of tears in seventy-seven,
They laid him down in hamburger heaven.
Record sales went through the roof.
Colonel Tom is living proof:
No-one needs a star that walks,
No-one has to pay a corpse.
Rake in profits from the door,
Put a show on in New York.
Here he is in Disneyland,
Playing another one-night stand.
Six million dollars has been spent
To make him president.

From Graceland to the promised land,
All through that commie war,
As famine spread throughout the land
And robots killed the poor.
And down south there's a rumour - they say he didn't die:
Just sitting in an ice-box like grandma's apple pie,
A man dressed all in army green with a phone right by the door
Waiting for an urgent call about that nuclear war.

Come here, kid, gimme that guitar, take this rifle. I'm gonna give you a haircut, make a man out if you, show you how to kill.
I want you to take this bible in your left hand, raise your right hand and repeat after me:
I swear by almighty God I will give my life for my country, I will give my wife for my country, I will give my sister's new baby for my country, I will give my daddy's Cadillac for my country, I will give my ma's new slimline vibrator for my country, I will give my uncle's kidney-shaped swimming pool for my country.
'Cos my country is the promised land and God is my president, my president is God, my rawhide.

Day that he died, day that he died
I was thinking that night about Elvis
Day that he died, day that he died
Just a country boy that combed his hair
And put on a shirt his mother made and went on the air
And he shook it like a chorus girl
And he shook it like a Harlem queen
He shook it like a midnight rambler, baby
Like you never seen
I was thinking that night about Elvis
Day that he died, day that he died
I was thinking that night about Elvis
Day that he died, day that he died
How he took it all out of black and white
Grabbed his wand in the other hand and he held on tight
And he shook it like a hurricane
He shook it like to make it break
And he shook it like a holy roller, baby
With his soul at stake
I was thinking that night about Elvis
Day that he died, day that he died
I was thinking that night about Elvis
Day that he died, day that he died
He was all alone in a long decline
Thinking how happy John Henry was that he fell down and died
When he shook it and he rang like silver
He shook it and it shined like gold
He shook it and he beat that steam drill, baby
Well bless my soul
He shook it and he beat that steam drill, baby
Well bless my soul, what's wrong with me?
I was thinking that night about Elvis
Day that he died, day that he died
I was thinking that night about Elvis
Day that he died, day that he died
Just a country boy that combed his hair
Put on a shirt his mother made and he went on the air
And he shook it like a chorus girl
He shook it like a Harlem queen
He shook it like a midnight rambler, baby
Like he never seen
(Gillian Welch)

Saw what the guy on TV said
The big rock awards
Crowned a brand new king
It shoulda been me instead
Don't they know I'm:
Elvis fuckin' Christ
Elvis fuckin' Christ
Chicken pluckin' runamuckin'
Elvis fuckin' Christ
Well I'm the 500 foot woman
I run an evil big black mass
I got two brass globes, you got to admit
My animal aplomb is vast
It's obvious:
Elvis fuckin' Christ
Elvis fuckin' Christ
Bronco buckin' jive'n'shuckin'
Elvis fuckin' Christ
I'm the captain of the cavalry
I'm the queen of outer space
I got a she devil orgy in the twilight zone
Sheer panties of the queen Anne's lace
Elvis fuckin' Christ
Elvis fuckin' Christ
Bad luck'n'mack truckin'
Elvis fuckin' Christ
Well the devil gave us Elvis
Drugs, sex and rock'n'roll
Greenbacks, fuzz and feedback
Demonseed and banshee hole
Frogs fallin' down from Heaven
Thunder under Hell
Trogglodynamite times seven
Cold titty witchin' spell: yeah
Elvis fuckin' Christ
Elvis fuckin' Christ
Chicken pluckin' runamuckin'
Elvis fuckin' Christ
Yeah, you might go to Devry
Beauty school or get a job
Or you might join a devil cult
O' some evil heart throb, like me:
Elvis fuckin' Christ
Elvis fuckin' Christ
Chicken pluckin' goo goo muckin'
Elvis fuckin' Christ
(who else? the cramps)

Aahh! The Sailing Elvis! Captain Elvis! Commodore Elvis, it is!
Yeah man, you know people from Outer Space?
People from outer space they come up to me
They don't look like like Doctor Spock? They don't look like Klingons?
All that Star Trek jive? ... They look like Elvis ... ELVIS!
Everybody in outer space looks like Elvis, 'Cause Elvis is a perfect being
We are all moving in perfect peace and harmony towards Elvisness
Soon all will become Elvis, Everything everywhere will be Elvis
Why do you think they call it evolution anyway? It's really Elvislution! ... Elvislution!
Elvis is everywhere, Elvis is everything
Elvis is everybody, Elvis is still the king
Man o man, What I want you to see
Is that the big E's, Inside of you and me
That's right ladies and gentlemen, The time has come!
Time has come to talk, To that little bit of Elvis inside of you
Talk to it! Call it up! ... Say "Elvis, heal me!" ... "Save me, Elvis!" ...
"Make me be born again, In the perfect Elvis light", That's right!
You've got that Elvis inside of ya, And he's talkin to ya
He says he wants you to sing! Everybody's got to sing like the king! Like the king
Get that leg going now, Get your lip too, Not no fool Billy Idol lip either
Everybody! Yeah, we're rockin now! Elvis is with us
He's with us and he's speaking to us, He says "Peoples!"
"Peoples! ... Everybody! ... Everybody got to sing!"
Elvis is everywhere, Elvis is everything
Elvis is everybody, Elvis is still the king
Man o man, What I want you to see
Is that the big E's, Inside of you and me ... ELVIS!
(Mojo Nixon)

It's dark, dark in the daytime
The people sleep, sleep in the daytime
If they want to, if they want to
[CHORUS]
I'm checking them out
I'm checking them out
I got it figured out
I got it figured out
There's good points and bad points
Find a city
Find myself a city to live in.
There are a lot of rich people in Birmingham
A lot of ghosts in a lot of houses
Look over there!...A dry ice factory
A good place to get some thinking done
Down el Paso way things get pretty spread out
People got no idea where in the world they are
They go up north and come back south
Still got no idea where in the world they are.
Did I forget to mention, to mention Memphis
Home of Elvis and the ancient greeks
Do I smell? I smell home cooking
It's only the river, it's only the river.
(talking heads)

Earn my livin' with my hand
I'm a roller in a steelmill
In downtown Birmingham
My daddy was a barber
And a most unsightly man
He was born in Tuscaloosa
But he died right here in Birmingham
Birmingham, Birmingham
The greatest city in Alabam'
You can travel 'cross this entire land
But there ain't no place like Birmingham
My wife's named Mary
But she's called Marie
We live in a three bedroom house
With a pepper tree
I work all day in the factory
That's alright with me
Got a big black dog whose name is Dan
Lives in my backyard in Birmingham
He is the meanest dog in Alabam'
Get 'em Dan
Birmingham, Birmingham
The greatest city in Alabam'
You can travel 'cross this entire land
But there ain't no place like Birmingham
(Randy Newman)

With a party in his head
And modified Brougham DeVille
And a pair of legs that opened up like butterfly wings
And a mad dog that wouldn't sit still
He went and took up with a Salvation Army band girl
Who played dirty water on a swordfishtrombone
He went to sleep at the bottom of Tenkiller lake
And he said "gee, but it's great to be home"
Well, he came home from the war with a party in his head
And an idea for a fireworks display
And he knew that he'd be ready with a stainless steel machete
And a half a pint of Ballentine's each day
And he holed up in room above a hardware store
Cryin' nothing there but Hollywood tears
He put a spell on some poor little Crutchfield girl
And stayed like that for twenty-seven years
He packed up all his expectations, he lit out for California
With a flyswatter banjo on his knee
With a lucky tiger in his angel hair and Benzedrine for getting there
They found him in a eucalyptus tree
Lieutenant got him a canary bird and skanked her head with every word
Chesterfielded moonbeams in a song
He got twenty years for lovin' her from some Oklahoma governor
Said "everything this Doughboy does is wrong"
Now some say he's doing the obituary mambo
Now some say that he's hanging on the wall
Perhaps this yarn's the only thing that holds this man together
Some say he was never here at all
And some say they saw him down in Birmingham
Sleeping in a boxcar going by
And if you think that you can tell a bigger tale
I swear to God you'd have to tell a lie
(tom waits)

Stands by the Highway raises its lily white hand
Boatloads of people rush to America's Birmingham
And you're damned if you do? and you're damned if you don't?
So you get yourself a job just to take something home
Now there's food on the table but nothing's left over? ... In Birmingham
Birmingham is just a place ... Birmingham is just a place to be ...
And you're working for nothing, making a living
Meanwhile the kingpins are making a killing
Boatloads of people are ready and willing ... In Birmingham
We live on the edge of a brand new World order
Breaking down factories, breaking down borders
The only surprise is the dream's still alive ... Down in Birmingham
Birmingham is just a place ... Birmingham is just a place to be ...
The Statue of Liberty outside of Birmingham
Stands by the Highway and raises its lily white hand
To bless all who pass, the rush hour masses ... Of Birmingham
(Patty Larkin)

Know that one hand wash the other (so they say)
So, let's join hands my bredren
Make the way for our children (our children, our children)
And their children (their children, their children)
Ensuring that they get life's fair share of, equality..
Doesn't justice stand for all?
Doesn't justice stand for all?
Doesn't justice stand for all mankind?
We find society putting us down
Crowning us, crowning us, crowning us, crowning us
A place of evil, oh, oh
Handsworth means us the black people
Handsworth means us the black people
We're talking now, speaking Jah Jah language!
It's a long, long way we're coming from
To send this message across, across
Its been hidden, forbidden, concealed, unrevealed
Its got to come out In the open that
Babylon is falling!
Babylon is falling!
It was foolish to build it on the sand
Handsworth shall stand, firm - like Jah rock - fighting back
We once beggars are now choosers, no intention to be losers
Striving forward with ambition
And if it takes ammunition
We rebel in Handsworth revolution
(steel pulse)

Nips in for a frothy one and who do you think she saw?
Mary, sitting with a black man. Oh, sister, mama won't like it.
Mary ain't going home any more.
Tracy, Vincent he's a good man. Please be careful what you say.
Vincent he's got heavy manners. Vincent's showing me the way.
I know I just love him. Tell them I ain't coming.
Mary ain't going home any more.
So the black and white, they mix it up.
They have a coffee kid from the loving cup.
And if the powers that be don't interrupt,
Things could be all right.
Mom tells dad to get the car out, searches Handsworth up and down.
Nips into a takeaway and there she is on Vincent's arm.
Mary, are you coming? No, dad, I ain't running.
Mary ain't going home any more.
Lance is dancing by the speakers, see's his brother by the bar.
What's he doing with a white girl? Don't he care about our ma?
Hey Vincent, what you doing? Hey Lance, she's my woman.
Mary ain't going home any more.
So the black and white, they mix it up.
They have a cocoa kid from the loving cup.
And if the powers that be don't interrupt,
Things could be all right.
(Steve Gibbons Band, 1978)

The page is white
Together we learn to read and write
A child is black
A child is white
A whole world looks upon the sight
A beautiful sight
And now a child can understand
That this is the law of all the land
All the land
The world is black
The world is white
It turns by day and then by night
A child is black
A child is white
Together they grow to see the light
To see the light
And now at last we plainly see
We'll have a dance of liberty
The world is black
The world is white
It turns by day and then by night
A child is black
A child is white
The whole world looks upon the sight
A beautiful sight
(three dog night)

It doesn't matter what your color
As long as you a true fella
As long as you a real fella
All the people of different races
With different lives, in different places
It doesn't matter what your name is
We got to have lots of changes
We need more brothers, if we're to make it
We need more sisters, if we're to save it
Are you the one that's gonna stand up and be counted
Are you the one who's gonna be there when we shout it
Are you the one that's always ready with a helping hand
Are you the one who understands these family plans
Black fella, white fella
Yellow fella, any fella
It doesn't matter what your color
As long as you a true fella
All the people of different races
With different lives, in different places
It doesn't matter which religions
It's all the same when the ship is sinking
We need more brothers, if we're to make it
We need more sisters, if we're to save it
Are you the one that's gonna stand up and be counted
Are you the one who's gonna be there when we shout it
Are you the one that's always ready with a helping hand
Are you the one who understands these family plans
Oh stand up, stand up and be counted
Oh stand up, stand up and be counted
Are you the one that's gonna stand up and be counted
Are you the one who's gonna be there when we shout it
Are you the one that's always ready with a helping hand
Are you the one who understands these family plans
Oh stand up, stand up and be counted
Oh stand up, stand up and be counted
(The Warumpi Band)

From the jungle to the street
Clap your hand and stamp your feet
A-hey! Hey
A-hey! Hey
Everybody's got a little soul
Black or white or brown or yellow
Youve got soul then you're my fellow
Black or white or brown or yellow
You've got soul then you're my fellow
A-hey! Hey
A-hey! Hey
Everybody's got a little soul
(Carmel)

I'm not your only friend
But I'm a little
Glowing friend
But really I'm not
Actually your friend
But I am
Blue canary in the outlet by the light switch
Who watches over you
Make a little birdhouse in your soul
Not to put too fine a point on it
Say I'm the only bee in your bonnet
Make a little birdhouse in your soul
I have a secret to tell
From my electrical well
It's a simple message and I'm
Leaving out the whistles and bells
So the room must listen to me
Filibuster vigilantly
My name is blue canary
One note spelled l-i-t-e
My story's infinite
Like the Longines Symphonette
It doesn't rest
Blue canary in the outlet by the light switch
Who watches over you
Make a little birdhouse in your soul
Not to put too fine a point on it
Say I'm the only bee in your bonnet
Make a little birdhouse in your soul
I'm your only friend
I'm not your only friend
But I'm a little
Glowing friend
But really I'm not
Actually your friend
But I am
There's a picture opposite me
Of my primitive ancestry
Which stood on rocky shores
And kept the beaches ship wreck free
Though I respect that a lot
I'd be fired if that were my job
After killing Jason off
And countless screaming Argonauts
Blue bird of friendliness
Like guardian angels it's always near
They Might be Giants

I got a Bluebird, A Bluebird on my shoulder
I saw her standing, Standing by the water
She was naked, Her hair in great disorder
And I know why I'm flying, And the rest is lies
I sent a warning, A warning of disaster
I sent a warning, I warned of great disaster
I sent that Bluebird, That Bluebird down the water
I sent that Bluebird, Floating down the water
And I know that I'm flying, And the rest is lies
And I know that I'm flying, And the rest is lies ... Bluebird
(Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds)

I'd give you a true word
But you've already had one
If you were a bluebird,
you'd be crying
You'd be flying home
If you were a raindrop,
You'd shine like a rainbow
And if you were a train stop,
The conductor would sing low
If you were a raindrop,
You'd be falling
You'd be calling home
If you were a hotel
Honey, you'd be a grand one
But, if you hit a slow spell,
Do you think you could stand one
If you were a hotel,
Well I'd lean on your doorbell
I'd call you my home
If I was a highway,
I'd stretch alongside you
I'd help you pass by ways
That had dissatisfied you
If I was a highway,
Well I'd be stretchin'
I'd be fetchin' you home
Emmylou

One of us changing our minds
You won't need to guess who? - since I usually do
Not send letters to me that are mine
I told him I saw this coming
That I'd practically packed up my things
I was glad at the time that I said I was fine, but all honesty knows
I wasn't ready ... no ...
And so here we go, bluebird, Back to the sky on your own
Ohhh let him go, bluebird ... Ready to fly, You and I ...
Here we go ... Here we go ...
This pair of wings worn and rusted
From too many years by my side
They can carry me, swear to be sturdy and strong, but see
Turning them on still means goodbye
And so here we go, bluebird, Gather your strength and rise up
Ohhh let him go, bluebird ... Ohhh let him go, bluebird ...
Ohhh let him go, bluebird ... Ready to fly, You and I ...
Here we go ... Here we go ... Here we go
(Sara Bareilles)

So I could hear you singing
And it was sweet and it was good
And love was all beginning
Fare thee well my nightingale
'Twas long ago I found you
Now all your songs of beauty fail
The forest closes 'round you
The sun goes down behind a veil
'Tis now that you would call me
So rest in peace my nightingale
Beneath your branch of holly
Fare thee well my nightingale
I lived but to be near you
Tho' you are singing somewhere still
I can no longer hear you
(leonard cohen)

I hear the real, though far-off hymn, That hails a new creation
Through all the tumult and the strife, I hear its music ringing
It sounds an echo in my soul ... How can I keep from singing?
While though the tempest loudly roars, I hear the truth it liveth
And though the darkness 'round me close, Songs in the night it giveth
No storm can shake my inmost calm, While to that rock I'm clinging
Since love is Lord of Heaven and Earth ... How can I keep from singing?
When tyrants tremble in their fear, And hear their death knell ringing
When friends rejoice both far and near ... How can I keep from singing?
In prison cell and dungeon vile, Our thoughts to them are winging
When friends by shame are undefiled ... How can I keep from singing?
(Enya)

I did all my best to smile
Till your singing eyes and fingers
Drew me loving to your isle
Sail to me, sail to me
Let me enfold you
Here I am, here I am
Waiting to hold you
Did I dream you dreamed about me?
Were you hare while I was fox?
Now my foolish boat is leaning
Broken lovelorn on your rocks
Touch ne not, touch me not
Come back tomorrow
Oh, my heart, oh, my heart
Shies from the sorrow
I am puzzled as the newborn child
I am troubled at the tide
Should I stand among the breakers?
Should I lie with Death my bride?
Swim to me, swim to me
Let me enfold you
Here I am, here I am
Waiting to hold you
(Robert Plant with a Tim Buckley song)

In a deep and dark December.
I am alone,
Staring from my window to the street below
On a freshly fallen, silent shroud of snow.
I am a rock.
I am an island.
I've built walls:
A fortress deep and mighty
That none may penetrate.
I have no need of friendship: friendship causes pain.
It's laughter and it's loving I disdain.
I am a rock.
I am an island.
Don't talk of love,
Though I've heard the word before:
It's sleeping in my memory.
I won't disturb the slumbers of feelings that have died.
If I never loved I never would have cried.
I am a rock.
I am an island.
I have my books
And my poetry to protect me;
I am shielded in my armour.
Hiding in my room, safe within my womb,
I touch no-one and no-one touches me.
I am a rock.
I am an island.
And a rock feels no pain
And an island never cries.
(Simon & Garfunkel)

Well, here's a little something to light the way
Inside your heart where the darkness stays
I believe the sun still rises here but when it falls
I'm not sure what there is to say?
Flickers in mine eye like a memory
I am not rock, I am not rain
I'm just another shadow in the stream
That's been washed away after all these years
I am not rocks in the river, I am bursting in tears for it
And the day is dawning
Whatever it is you wanted I think you got?
But, take a little something to light the way
Inside your mind when the weather is gray
I believe the sun still rises here but when it falls
There is something to be said for the calm at night
When the stars up above are so cold and bright
I am not rock, I am not rain
I'm just another shadow in the stream
That's been washed away after all these years
I am not rocks in the river, I am bursting in tears for it
And the day is dawning ... And the day is dawning
(Ryan Adams)

How's that? How's that?
How's that? How's that?
Hit by a rock
Spoiling my breakfast
Hit by a rock
Blood and brains on my marmalede
Anti-hero Anti-hero
Hit by a rock
Hit by a rock
I see your face right in my marmalede
Feel like throwing up but I can't say
Hit by a rock
Hit by a rock
Makes my meal OK
Makes me feel someday
Hit by a rock
Hit by a rock
Hit by a rock
Hit by a rock
Who did it?
Who did it?
Whose is it?
Hit by a rock
Hit by a rock
Makes me think you don't like my records...
(throbbing gristle)

If I was a pony then you'd let me trot
If I was the atom then you'd split me into three
But when I want to see you baby
How come you lock your door on me?
If I was a baby you wouldn't let me fall
If I was an outlaw you wouldn't have me caught
If I was a tiger you wouldn't have me caged
If I was somebody else you would act your age
You'll miss out if you leave me out
Of your day and night
I will try to make you see and hear what I got to say
It's all about me and you alright
If I was a blind man then you'd make me see
If I was a deaf man you'd give me ears to hear
If I was a lame man you'd give me legs to walk
But if you were true to me, baby
You'd listen when I talk
If I was a cradle then you'd let me rock
If I was a pony then you'd let me trot
If I was an atom you'd split me into three
But when I want to see you baby
How come you lock your door on me?
(Rory Gallagher)

Here's what he did we he wanted a rave
He took a stick and he drew on the wall
Man, a fellah had to settle for
Rock with the caveman
Roll with the caveman
Shake with the caveman
Baby, make with the caveman, oh boy
Shake with the caveman
Stalactites, stalagmiite
Hold your baby very tight
His way with women was rather neat
He'd love a girl right off her feet
You know the lyric writers would never lie
It's where they got the sayin' "starry eyed"
Rock with the caveman
Roll with the caveman
Shake with the caveman
Make with the caveman, oh boy
Shake with the caveman
Stalactites, stalagmiite
Hold your baby very tight
Piltdown poppa sings this song
"Archaeology's done me wrong"
The British Museum's got my head
Most unfortunate 'cause I ain't dead
Rock with the caveman
Roll with the caveman
Shake with the caveman
Break with the caveman
Make with the caveman
C-A-V-E-M-A-N, Caveman!
Tommy Steele

I had that feeling of self-pity, What to do, what to do, what to do?
The outlook was decidedly blue
But as I walked through the foggy streets alone ...
It turned out to be the luckiest day I've known ...
A foggy day in London Town, Had me low and had me down
I viewed the morning with much alarm, The British Museum had lost its charm
How long, I wondered, could this thing last? But the age of miracles hadn't passed
For, suddenly, I saw you there, And through foggy London Town
The sun was shining everywhere
For suddenly, I saw you there, And through foggy London Town
The sun was shining everywhere ... Everywhere, Everywhere, Everywhere
(Louis Armstrong & Ella Fitzgerald)

To wake you from your slumber, While England is asleep
The hotel is just like yesterday's, And the city has no name
It just stands there in a grey haze, And my room is the same
Well, I'm gonna call that number, So far across the sea
I wish I was in London, That's where I wanna be ... That's where I wanna be ...
I love it when you miss me, And I'm unhappy too
Ohhh please, don't you forget me, I am so in love with you
Yeah, it won't be long now, And even though I know
I seem to leave my heart behind me, Every time I go
Well, I'm gonna call that number, So far across the sea
I wish I was in London, That's where I wanna be ...
Well, I'm gonna call that number, So far across the sea
I wish I was in London, That's where I wanna be ... That's where I wanna be ...
Well, I feel so tired and lonely, I'm thinking of you, lover
I wish you could console me ... Maybe when it's over? ...
I am gonna call that number, Though I don't really mean
To wake you from your slumber, While England is asleep
And the hotel is just like yesterday's, And the city has no name
It just stands there in a grey haze, And my room is ... my room is the same
I'm gonna call that number, So far across the sea
I wish I was in London, That's where I wanna be ...
Well, I'm gonna call that number, So far across the sea
I wish I was in London, That's where I wanna be ... That's where I wanna be ...
That's where I wanna be ...
(Lyrics by Sandy Denny - set to Music by Thea Gilmore)
I believe we place our happiness in other people's hands
I believe that junk food tastes so good because it's bad for you
I believe your parents did the best job they knew how to do
I believe that beauty magazines promote low self esteem
I believe I'm loved when I'm completely by myself alone
I believe in Karma what you give is what you get returned
I believe you can't appreciate real love until you've been burned
I believe the grass is no more greener on the other side
I believe you don't know what you've got until you say goodbye
I believe you can't control or choose your sexuality
I believe that trust is more important than monogamy
I believe that your most attractive features are your heart and soul
I believe that family is worth more than money or gold
I believe the struggle for financial freedom isn't fair
I believe the only ones who disagree are millionaires
I believe in Karma what you give is what you get returned
I believe you can't appreciate real love until you've been burned
I believe the grass is no more greener on the other side
I believe you don't know what you've got until you say goodbye
I believe forgiveness is the key to your unhappiness
I believe that wedded bliss negates the need to be undressed
I believe that God does not endorse TV evangelists
I believe in love surviving death into eternity
I believe in Karma what you give is what you get returned
I believe you can't appreciate real love until you've been burned
I believe the grass is no more greener on the other side
I believe you don't know what you've got until you say goodbye
