It's not that easy being green;
Having to spend each day the color of the leaves.
When I think it could be nicer being red, or yellow or gold-
or something much more colorful like that.
It's not easy being green.
It seems you blend in with so many other ordinary things.
And people tend to pass you over 'cause you're not standing out like flashy sparkles in the water -
or stars in the sky.
But green's the color of Spring.
And green can be cool and friendly-like.
And green can be big like an ocean, or important like a mountain, or tall like a tree.
When green is all there is to be
It could make you wonder why, but why wonder
Why wonder,
I am green and it'll do fine, it's beautiful!
And I think it's what I want to be.
(Kermit the Frog)

I was 21 years when I wrote this song
I'm 22 now, but I won't be for long, Time hurries on
And the leaves that are green turn to brown
And they wither with the wind, And they crumble in your hand
Once my heart was filled with the love of a girl
I held her close, but she faded in the night, Like a poem I meant to write
And the leaves that are green turn to brown
And they wither with the wind, And they crumble in your hand
I threw a pebble in a brook, And watched the ripples run away
And they never made a sound
And the leaves that are green turn to brown
And they wither with the wind, And they crumble in your hand
Hello, hello, hello, hello
Good-bye, good-bye, good-bye, good-bye
That's all there is, And the leaves that are green turn to brown
(Simon & Garfunkel)

It was a very good year
It was a very good year for small town girls
And soft summer nights
We'd hide from the lights
On the village green
When I was seventeen
When I was twenty-one
It was a very good year
It was a very good year for city girls
Who lived up the stair
With all that perfumed hair
And it came undone
When I was twenty-one
When I was thirty-five
It was a very good year
It was a very good year for blue-blooded girls
Of independent means
We'd ride in limousines
Their chauffeurs would drive
When I was thirty-five
But now the days are short
I'm in the autumn of the year
And now I think of my life as vintage wine
From fine old kegs
From the brim to the dregs
It poured sweet and clear
It was a very good year
(Frank Sinatra)

Maybe we make a deal? Maybe together we can get somewhere?
Anyplace is better, Starting from zero, got nothing to lose
Maybe we'll make something? Me, myself, I got nothing to prove
You got a fast car, I got a plan to get us out of here
Been working at the convenience store, Managed to save just a little bit of money
Won't have to drive too far? Just 'cross the border and into the city
You and I can both get jobs, And finally see what it means to be living
You see my old man's got a problem, He live with the bottle, that's the way it is
He says his body's too old for working, His body's too young to look like his
My mama went off and left him, She wanted more from life than he could give
I said, "somebody's got to take care of him", So I quit school and that's what I did
You got a fast car, Is it fast enough so we can fly away?
We gotta make a decision ... Leave tonight or live and die this way
So remember when we were driving, driving in your car?
Speed so fast, I felt like I was drunk
City lights lay out before us, And your arm felt nice wrapped 'round my shoulder
I had a feeling that I belonged
I had a feeling I could be someone, be someone, be someone
You got a fast car, We go cruising to entertain ourselves
You still ain't got a job, I work in a market as a checkout girl
I know things will get better, You'll find work and I'll get promoted
We'll move out of the shelter, Buy a bigger house and live in the suburbs
So remember when we were driving, driving in your car?
Speed so fast, I felt like I was drunk
City lights lay out before us, And your arm felt nice wrapped 'round my shoulder
I had a feeling that I belonged
I had a feeling I could be someone, be someone, be someone
You got a fast car, I got a job that pays all our bills
You stay out drinking late at the bar, See more of your friends than you do your kids
I'd always hoped for better, Thought maybe together you and me would find it
I got no plans, I ain't going nowhere, So take your fast car and keep on driving
So remember when we were driving, driving in your car?
Speed so fast, I felt like I was drunk
City lights lay out before us, And your arm felt nice wrapped 'round my shoulder
I had a feeling that I belonged
I had a feeling I could be someone, be someone, be someone
You got a fast car, But is it fast enough so you can fly away?
You gotta make a decision ... Leave tonight or live and die this way
(Tracy Chapman)

I bought it in Primrose Hill, From a bloke from Brazil
It was made in fifty-nine, In a factory by the Tyne
It says Morris on the door, The GPO owned it before
I drive in it for my job, The governor calls me a slob
But I don't really care, Give me some gas and the open air
It's a bit old but it's mine, I mend it in my spare time
Just last week I changed the oil, The rocker valves and the coil
Just last week I changed the oil
Last week it went 'round the clock, I also heard a little knock
I dented somebody's fender, He learned not to park on a bender, ha ha ha
I've been driving in my car, And it don't look much but I've been far
I drive up to Muswell Hill, I've even been to Selsey Bill
I drove along the A45, I had her up to fifty-eight
This copper stopped me the other day, "You're mistaken", what could I say?
The tires were a little worn, They were ok, I could have sworn
I like driving in my car, I'm satisfied I've got this far
I like driving in my car, It don't look much but I've been far
I like driving in my car, Even with a flat tyre
I like driving in my car, It's not quite a Jaguar
I like driving in my car, I'm satisfied I've got this far
(Madness)

Sign on the windshield tells the whole tale
Earl's dead – Cadillac for sale
He was a circus man when they first met
He was fired from a cannon into a net
The money was good he always hit the bullseye
Savin' for the car one day he would buy
No, he wasn't thinkin' of some average ride
A human cannonball has a lot of pride
If you're gonna live large you need a hydramatic
Eldorado Biarritz for this wild acrobatic
And Earl's is red with shark-like fins
And that is where this little love tale begins
The rear view mirror puts it all in scale
Earl's dead – Cadillac for sale
She was an Everglades girl, partly Seminole
With an urge for goin', and a wanderin' soul
With a name like Moonvine she knew she'd never stay
That handsome human bullet stole her heart away
It was a Saturday night after the midnight show
She was starin' at the car when he said "hello"
Didn't take too much to move her off the reservation
Just a good lookin' boy with the right transportation
And now Earl is wed, Moonvine's got her veil
They're towin' that cannon down the Tamiami Trail
He's got the talent, she's got brains
Earl and Moonvine, left the land of sugar cane
So they drove down to Panama and back up to Maine
Had so much fun, hell, they did it again
Crossing cities off the map as they shot down the road
Knowin' towin' a cannon, things could explode
Now a Cadillac was always an Elvis thing
Polished chrome and gold it was the birth of bling
They came with personality they made you a star
God may have made the earth
But man made that car
Now all the way back to the time of James Dean
Car crash songs chewed up heroes and machines
Sick minds, stop signs and uncontrolled swerves
But Early and his Caddy could handle killer curves
So when the big top folded, Early took his last drive
Moonvine kissed her boy goodbye, his exit had arrived
She shot his ashes 'cross the Gulf from that ancient rusty gun
Nomads know when the show is done
And Earl's dead, he's been airmailed
And that Eldorado's waitin' on the Tamiami Trail
For some shameless entertainer to blow in like a gale
Earl's dead – Cadillac for sale
Earl's dead, Earl's dead
(Jimmy Buffett)

I'll sail away, On a voyage of no return to see, If eternal life is meant to be
And if I find the key, To the eternal dream ...
The painted ladies of the Avalon, Play in the sun, take to the road
To the north, there lies the chills of cold, To the south, there lies the tales untold
Ohhh, but in between, there lies, The place to close your eyes ...
And I will stay-ayyy ... I'll not be back, Eldorado
I will be free-eee ... Of the world, Eldorado
"Say goodbye," the city's heroes sing, Bird on the wing, feel, feel so free
Ohhh, the life upon the rooftop haze, All the cheating and the broken days
So through it all, I see, There's nothing left for me ...
So I will stay-ayyy ... I'll not be back, Eldorado
I will be free-eee ... Of the world, Eldorado
Sitting here on top of everywhere, What do I care?
Days never end, Though the voyage's end will soon be here
No eternal life is here for me, Ohhh, and now I found the key, To the eternal dream ...
Then I will stay-ayyy, I'll not be back, Eldorado
I will be free-eee, Of the world, Eldorado
Then I will stay-ayyy, I'll not be back, Eldorado
(ELO)

I follow a broken thread
Of white rags falling slowly down
Flags caught on the fences
I am in love
I am in love with you
I am in love
I am in love with you
I walk across the rooftops
The jangle of St. Steven's bells
The telephones that ring all night
Incommunicado
I am in love
I am in love with you
I am in love
I am in love with you
The traffic lights are changing
The black and white horizon
I leave the quiet red-stone
And walk across the rooftops
I walk across the rooftops
On graduation day
To look for independence, yeah
I am in love
I am in love with you
I am in love
I am in love with you
The lights are always changing
The black and white horizon
I leave the red-stone building
And walk across the rooftops
I walk across the rooftops
I walk across the rooftops
I walk across the rooftops
(The Blue Nile)

A sweep is as lucky, as lucky can be
Chim chim-in-ey, chim chim-in-ey, Chim chim cher-oo!
Good luck will rub off when I shakes 'ands with you
Or blow me a kiss! ... and that's lucky too!
Now, as the ladder of life 'as been strung
You might think a sweep's on the bottommost rung
Though I spends me time in the ashes and smoke
In this 'ole wide world there's no 'appier bloke
Chim chim-in-ey, chim chim-in-ey, Chim chim cher-ee!
A sweep is as lucky, as lucky can be
Chim chim-in-ey, chim chim-in-ey, Chim chim cher-oo!
Good luck will rub off when I shakes 'ands with you
Chim chim-in-ey, chim chim-in-ey, Chim chim cher-ee!
A sweep is as lucky, as lucky can be
Chim chim-in-ey, chim chim-in-ey, Chim chim cher-oo!
Good luck will rub off when I shakes 'ands with you
I choose me bristles with pride, yes, I do
A broom for the shaft and a brush for the flue
Up where the smoke is all billered and curled
'Tween pavement and stars is the chimney sweep world
When there's 'ardly no day nor 'ardly no night
There's things 'alf in shadow and 'alfway in light
On the rooftops of London, coo, what a sight!
Chim chim-in-ey, chim chim-in-ey, Chim chim cher-ee!
When you're with a sweep you're in glad company
Nowhere is there a more 'appier crew
Than them wot sings, "Chim chim cher-ee, chim cher-oo!"
Chim chim-in-ey, chim chim cher-ee, chim cher-oo!
(Mary Poppins)

Strung out on lasers and slash-back blazers
Ate all your razors while pulling the waiters
Talking 'bout Monroe and walking on Snow White
New York's a go-go, and everything tastes right
Poor little Greenie, ooh-ooh
Keep her comin'
The Jean Genie lives on his back
The Jean Genie loves chimney stacks
He's outrageous, he screams and he bawls (Jean Genie)
Jean Genie, let yourself go, whoah
Sits like a man but he smiles like a reptile
She love him, she love him but just for a short while
She'll scratch in the sand, won't let go his hand
He says he's a beautician and sells you nutrition
And keeps all your dead hair for making up underwear
Poor little Greenie, ooh-ooh
The Jean Genie lives on his back
The Jean Genie loves chimney stacks
He's outrageous, he screams and he bawls (Jean Genie)
Jean Genie, let yourself go, whoah
He's so simple-minded, he can't drive his module
He bites on the neon and sleeps in a capsule
Loves to be loved, loves to be loved
Oh, Jean Genie lives on his back
The Jean Genie loves chimney stacks
He's outrageous, he screams and he bawls (Jean Genie)
Jean Genie, let yourself go, whoah
Go!
Go!
The Jean Genie lives on his back
The Jean Genie loves chimney stacks
He's outrageous, he screams and he bawls (Jean Genie)
Jean Genie, let yourself go, whoah
Go, go go!
(David Bowie)

The genie in the bottom of the Jim Beam bottle, Made me do what I didn't wanna do
I made a wish with the genie but the genie was a meanie, And he didn't make my wish come true
I was hoping he would make your memory go away, But I'm still thinking of you ...
And the genie in the bottom of the Jim Beam bottle, Made me do what I didn't wanna do
3 weeks, 2 days and one whole world has gone, Since you saddled up and said so long
Ohhh, so I found a friend who I thought would end, The pain I'm in but I was wrong
The genie in the bottom of the Jim Beam bottle, Made me do what I didn't wanna do
I made a wish with the genie but the genie was a meanie, And he didn't make my wish come true
I was hoping he would make your memory go away, But I'm still thinking of you ...
And the genie in the bottom of the Jim Beam bottle, Made me do what I didn't wanna do
When you wish upon each shot you drink, They would come true you'd like to think
But that old genie or Jinn ain't done one single thing, To help me change the state I'm in
The genie in the bottom of the Jim Beam bottle, Made me do what I didn't wanna do
I made a wish with the genie but the genie was a meanie, And he didn't make my wish come true
I was hoping he would make your memory go away, But I'm still thinking of you ...
And the genie in the bottom of the Jim Beam bottle, Made me do what I didn't wanna do
And the genie in the bottom of the Jim Beam bottle, Made me do what I didn't wanna do
(Adam Harvey)

Not feeling any pain at closing time
But tonight your memory found me much too sober
Couldn't drink enough to keep you off my mind
Tonight the bottle let me down
And let your memory come around
The one true friend I thought I'd found
Tonight the bottle let me down
I've always had a bottle I could turn to
And lately I've been turnin' every day
But the wine don't take effect the way it used to
And I'm hurtin' in an old familiar way
Tonight the bottle let me down
And let your memory come around
The one true friend I thought I'd found
Tonight the bottle let me down
Tonight the bottle let me down
(Merle Haggard and many others)
Suzy - Adam Harvey is a well-known country singer here in Oz)

Once in Royal David's City
Stood a lonely cattle shed
Where a mother laid her baby
You'd do well to remember the things he later said
When you're stuffing yourselves at the Christmas parties
You'll just laugh when I tell you to take a running jump
You're missing the point I'm sure does not need making
That Christmas spirit is not what you drink
So how can you laugh when your own mother's hungry?
And how can you smile when the reasons for smiling are wrong?
And if I just messed up your thoughtless pleasures
Remember, if you wish, this is just a Christmas song
... Hey! Santa! Pass us that bottle, will yer?
(Jethro Tull)

Yeah, it's strange how time marches on
Maybe there'll be some time in the future
Oh, tell me I'm not wrong
Oh, if I could stop time
It would be a frozen moment just around Christmas
When all of mankind reveals its truest potential
And there is sympathy for the suffering
Yes, there is sympathy for those who are suffering
And the world embraces peace and love and mercy
Instead of power and fear
And as sure as I'm standing here
I swear it really does appear that a change comes over us
Yes, some kind of change comes over us
And it's glimpsed for one shining moment
And this change feels like a change that's real
But then it passes along with the season
And then we just go back to the way we were
Yes, we just go back to the way we were
Say it isn't so
Tell me I'm not just a dreamer
I'm talking with a friend and he knows how it ends
He says it's easier, that's just the way we are
That's human nature and that's just the way we are
Oh, say it isn't so!
The Flaming Lips

That's not what I wanna hear, Joe, and I've got a right to know
Say it ain't so, Joe, please, Say it ain't so
I'm sure they're telling us lies, Joe, please tell us it ain't so
They told us that our hero has played his trump card, He doesn't know how to go on
They're clinging to his charm and determined smile, But the good ole days have gone
The image and the empire may be falling apart, The money has gotten scarce
One man's word held the country together, But the truth is getting fierce
Say it ain't so, Joe, please, Say it ain't so
We pinned our hopes on you, Joe, and they're ruining our show
(Oooh, baby) Don't you think we're gonna get burned?
(Oooh, baby) Don't you think we're gonna get burned?
We're gonna get turned, We're gonna get learned
'Cause we're gonna get turned, We're gonna get burned, We're gonna get learned
Yes, we're gonna get burned, We're gonna get burned, We're gonna get learned
Yes, we're gonna get turned, We're gonna get learned
Say it ain't so, Joe, please, Say it ain't so
That's not what I wanna hear, Joe, and I've got a right to know
Say it ain't so, Joe, please, Say it ain't so
I'm sure they're telling us lies, Joe, please tell us it ain't so
They told us that our leader has played his trump card, He doesn't know how to go on
They're clinging to his charm and determined smile, But the good ole days have gone
Say it ain't so, Joe, please, Say it ain't so
It's not what I wanna hear, Joe, Say it ain't so
The image and the empire may be falling apart, The money has gotten scarce
One man's word held the country together, But the truth is getting fierce
Say it ain't so, Joe, please, Say it ain't so
We pinned our hopes on you, Joe, and they're ruining our show
Say it ain't so, Joe, please, Say it ain't so
Ooh, that's not what I wanna to hear, Joe, and I've got the right to know
(Murray Head)

I hope you're keeping well
It's the 21st of December
Now they're ringing the last bell
If I get good behaviour
I'll be out of here by July
Won't you kiss my kids on Christmas day
Please don't let them cry for me
I guess the brothers are driving down from Queensland
And Stella's flying in from the coast
They say it's gonna be a hundred degrees, even more maybe,
But that won't stop the roast
Who's gonna make the gravy now?
I bet it won't taste the same
Just add flour, salt, a little red wine and don't forget a dollop of
Tomato sauce for sweetness and that extra tang
And give my love to Angus, and to Frank and Dolly,
Tell 'em all I'm sorry I screwed up this time
And look after Rita, I'll be thinking of her early Christmas morning
When I'm standing in line
I hear Mary's got a new boyfriend, I hope he can hold his own
Do you remember the last one? What was his name again?
(Just a little too much cologne)
And Roger, you know I'm even gonna miss Roger
'Cause there's sure as hell no one in here I want to fight
Oh praise the Baby Jesus, have a Merry Christmas,
I'm really gonna miss it, all the treasure and the trash
And later in the evening, I can just imagine,
You'll put on Junior Murvin and push the tables back
And you'll dance with Rita, I know you really like her,
Just don't hold her too close, oh brother please don't stab me in the back
I didn't mean to say that, it's just my mind it plays up,
Multiplies each matter, turns imagination into fact
You know I love her badly, she's the one to save me,
I'm gonna make some gravy, I'm gonna taste the fat
Tell her that I'm sorry, yeah I love her badly, tell 'em all I'm sorry,
And kiss the sleepy children for me
You know one of these days, I'll be making gravy,
I'll be making plenty, I'm gonna pay 'em all back.
(Paul Kelly)
Paul Kelly is a national treasure and every Aussie knows this song word for word. It's just been made into a film - same title (How To Make Gravy) which we watched on December 21st - the official Gravy Day. Not bad, well made but a tad slow. It's produced by another of my favourite singers, Megan Washington, who also has a small role in it, and directed by her husband. Also in the cast are Kate Mulvany (Stella) and Damon Herriman (Roger) who are also to be found in the Robbie Williams biopic playing his mother and manager respectively. I didn't realise the latter film was made here in Melbourne.

Babe, I know I've said some words that hurt before
But hey, You've never caught me running for the door
So stay, There's nothing else that I've been needing more
Than your face, And I could try to ignore it, But I'd be a bore for it
Ooh, it's systematic that I, Panic and turn the organic manic
Ooh, no doubt there's magic but I, Feel like I'm sinking the Titanic
I just want to, Shout it out, I mean, I can't be me without you around
Don't mean to be lazy, But you're really my baby
Believe me now, Just want takeout with you on the couch
I'd sound a little crazy, But I love you like gravy
Okay, Put all my issues and our boxes down
'Cause hey, We don't need to explore 'em, Can we build a fort for 'em?
Oooh, it's systematic that I, Panic and turn the organic manic
Oooh, no doubt there's magic but I, Feel like I'm sinking the Titanic
I just want to, Shout it out, I mean, I can't be me without you around
Don't mean to be lazy, But you're really my baby
Believe me now, Just want takeout with you on the couch
I'd sound a little crazy, But I love you like gravy
I just want you to know, Just want you to know
I just want you to know ... I love you like gravy
I just want you to know, Just want you to know
I just want you to know ... I love you like gravy
(Laoise)

Than bacon & lettuce & homegrown tomatoes
Up in the mornin' out in the garden
Get you a ripe one don't get a hard one
Plant 'em in the spring eat 'em in the summer
All winter with out 'em's a culinary bummer
I forget all about the sweatin' & diggin'
Everytime I go out & pick me a big one
Homegrown tomatoes, homegrown tomatoes
What'd life be without homegrown tomatoes
Only two things that money can't buy
That's true love & homegrown tomatoes
You can go out to eat & that's for sure
But it's nothin' a homegrown tomato won't cure
Put 'em in a salad, put 'em in a stew
You can make your very own tomato juice
Eat 'em with eggs, eat 'em with gravy
Eat 'em with beans, pinto or navy
Put 'em on the side put 'em in the middle
Put a homegrown tomato on a hotcake griddle
If I's to change this life I lead
I'd be Johnny Tomato Seed
'Cause I know what this country needs
Homegrown tomatoes in every yard you see
When I die don't bury me
In a box in a cemetery
Out in the garden would be much better
I could be pushin' up homegrown tomatoes
(Guy Clark)

Did you hear the one? yeah yeah, The one they wrote in the paper just the other day?
Well, well, would you believe it? Well, I said, they took it all the wrong way
Now you've gotta be careful 'bout what you say, 'Cause they've got a bad habit
Were you reading between the lines? Or is that what I said, now I just can't remember?
They seem to have a very good memory though, But, as far as I'm concerned
As far as I'm concerned, You don't have to be black, white, Chinese or anything really ...
Just enjoy, shut up, listen and dance ... It's all eggs, bacon, beans and a fried slice ...
(Don't quote me on that) Don't quote me on that, (Don't quote me on that)
Please don't quote me (Don't quote me on that) (Don't quote me on that)
Hey, Hey, you know something, I said I liked that guy
But that's not what I read in the paper, I don't have anything against them ...
It's just eggs, bacon, beans and a fried slice ...
(Don't quote me on that) Hmmm, don't quote me on that (Don't quote me on that)
Please don't quote me (Don't quote me on that) (Don't quote me on that)
You know, now we get worried about what we say
You know, we shouldn't be that way, You know, I don't care who comes
'Cause as far as I'm concerned ... It's eggs, bacon, beans and a fried slice ...
(Don't quote me on that) Don't quote me on that
(Don't quote me on that) Please don't quote me
Mama, Mama, you know I'm still friends with Mickey?
They say that I shouldn't like him anymore, 'Cause I'm all white? ...
Well, he's alright by me
Don't Quote me on that (Don't quote me on that) Please don't quote me
(Don't quote me on that) (Don't quote me on that)
Now what I do is, I bring all my old friends along to see the show
And if you have the wrong ideas well ... It's all eggs, bacon, beans and a fried slice ...
(Don't quote me on that, oh no) (Don't quote me on that) Please don't quote me
(Don't quote me on that, oh no) (Don't quote me on that) I never said that
(Don't quote me on that) That's not what I meant
Well, I suppose you could take it that way? (Don't quote me on that, oh no)
But that's not what I meant to say (Don't quote me on that, oh no)
Won't you give me another chance? (Don't quote me on that, oh oh oh)
Please, please, Don't quote me on that (Don't quote me on that, oh no)
I'd like to say thank you to Pete, Peter Tosh
And all the other people who come and they believe in us for the fun and the music
Cause all I've got to say to you Press now is ... It's all eggs, bacon, beans and a fried slice
Eggs, bacon, beans and a fried slice ... Go to Maggie's Caff, 132 Liverpool Road
Just down the road, just round the corner, Only there's not much corner
It's just chairs and tables and they've even got a Space Invaders machine
A cup of tea, that's fine for me ... 'Cause it's all eggs, bacon, beans and a fried slice
Are you sure you turned that tape recorder off? ... Are you sure? ... Are you sure? ...
(Madness)

Ooh, ooh
Button up your sheepskin Caraway
Rainy cafe, Kentish Town, Tuesday
Barry's looking through the Racing Post
Orders coffee, another round of toast
Lucy writes a letter
She'd like to spend an evening with Prince B
When we meet for a while, Tuesday morning ten AM
When we meet for a while, Tuesday morning ten AM
Everyone's dreaming of all they've got to live for
Joking around, still digging that sound
Everyone's dreaming of all they've got to live for
Squeezy bottles under Pepsi signs
Joe and Johnny chew the bacon rind
Jackie wants to meet the Glitter Band
Dilworth is a strange and lovely man
And Eubank wins the fight
And did you see the KLF last night?
When we meet for a while, Tuesday morning ten AM
When we meet for a while, Tuesday morning ten AM
Everyone's dreaming of all they've got to live for
Joking around, still digging that sound
Everyone's dreaming of all they've got to live for

When we meet for a while, Tuesday morning ten AM
When we meet for a while, Tuesday morning ten AM
When we meet for a while, Tuesday morning ten AM
When we meet for a while, meet for a while
Meet for a while, meet for a while
When we meet for a while, meet for a while
Meet for a while, meet for a while

Miranda works the late night counter, A little joint called Betty's Diner
Chrome and checkered tablecloths, And one steamy windowpane
She got the job that shaky Fall, And after hours she'll write till dawn
With a nod and smile she serves them all ...
Here we are all in one place, The wants and wounds of the human race
Despair and hope sit face to face, When you come in from the cold
Let her fill your cup with something kind, Eggs and toast like bread and wine
She's heard it all so she don't mind ...
Arthur lets his earl gray steep, Since April it's been hard to sleep
You know they tried most everything, But it took her in the end
And Kevin tests new saxophones, But he swears he's leaving quality control
For the Chicago scene or New Orleans, Where they still play righteous horns ...
Here we are all in one place, The wants and wounds of the human race
Despair and hope sit face to face, When you come in from the cold
Let her fill your cup with something kind, Eggs and toast like bread and wine
She's heard it all so she don't mind ...
Jack studies here after work, To get past high school he's the first
And his big hands look comfortable, With a hammer or a pen
And Emma leaned and kissed his cheek, And when she did his knees got weak
Miranda smiles at Em and winks ...
Here we are all in one place, The wants and wounds of the human race
Despair and hope sit face to face, When you come in from the cold
Let her fill your cup with something kind, Eggs and toast like bread and wine
She's heard it all so she don't mind ...
You never know who'll be your witness ...
You never know who grants forgiveness ...
Look to heaven or sit with us ...
Deidra bites her lip and frowns, She works the Stop & Go downtown
She's pretty good at the crossword page, And she paints her eyes blue-black
Tristan comes along sometimes, Small for his age and he's barely five
But she loves him like a mama lion ...
And Veda used to drink a lot, Almost lost it all before she stopped
Comes in at night with her friend Mike, Who runs the Crisis Line
Michael toured Saigon and back, Hair the color of smoke and ash
Their heads are bowed and hands are clasped, One more storm has passed ...
Here we are all in one place, The wants and wounds of the human race
Despair and hope sit face to face, When you come in from the cold
Let her fill your cup with something kind, Eggs and toast like bread and wine
She's heard it all so she don't mind

The city was awash with sunlight, fresh and bright and new
And as we drove he told me of his home town and his family
He came here from Greek Islands at 19 in ‘52.
They laughed at him in Flinders Street in his tailored foreign clothing
Without a word of English he set out to build a dream
And now his health has failed him after 30 years of labouring
But he's proud of the life he built and the Aussie he became.
CHORUS:
And how many times has he told his tale to strangers
Laying out his life while driving round and round the town
How many times has he had no word of answer
From passengers preoccupied with stories of their own
I didn't notice her until she came and sat beside me
She started conversation in a voice genteel and clear
She used to be a nanny, nursemaid to a wealthy family
She went to them for six months and stayed for fifty years.
She'd only left the family home a year ago Madam died
Now she lives alone and comes to town for company
The baby that she nursed is now a 50 year old bachelor
Who brings her shirts to iron and some sweets and memories.
CHORUS:
And how many times has she told her tale to strangers
Met by chance on buses or in cafes over tea
How many times has she delighted in exchanges
With people who are friends for those few moments of her day
These are the people of our time no less than those
Whose names and faces grace our papers pages and our TV screens
People on whose labour in the shadows we have built our lives
Who get none of the glory and who bear most of the pain.
CHORUS:
And how many times do they tell their tales to strangers
Who turn away in silence and pretend they didn't hear
How many times do we throw away such chances
Never knowing what we might have learned with open ears.
(Judy Small)

Trends change, rumors fly through new skies, But I'm right where you left me ...
Matches burn after the other, Pages turn and stick to each other
Wages earned and lessons learned, But I, I'm right where you left me ...
Help, I'm still at the restaurant, Still sitting in a corner I haunt
Cross-legged in the dim light, They say, "What a sad sight"
I, I swear you could hear a hair pin drop, Right when I felt the moment stop
Glass shattered on the white cloth, Everybody moved on
I, I stayed there, Dust collected on my pinned-up hair
They expected me to find somewhere, Some perspective, but I sat and stared ...
Right where you left me, You left me no, oh, you left me no ...
You left me no choice but to stay here forever ...
You left me, you left me no, oh, you left me no ...
You left me no choice but to stay here forever ...
Did y'ever hear about the girl who got frozen? Time went on for everybody else, she won't know it
She's still 23 inside her fantasy, How it was supposed to be?
Did you hear about the girl who lives in delusion? Break-ups happen every day, you don't have to lose it
She's still 23 inside her fantasy, And you're sitting in front of me
At the restaurant, when I was still the one you want, Cross-legged in the dim light, everything was just right
I, I could feel the mascara run, You told me that you met someone
Glass shattered on the white cloth, Everybody moved on ...
Help, I'm still at the restaurant, Still sitting in a corner I haunt
Cross-legged in the dim light, They say, "What a sad sight"
I, I stayed there, Dust collected on my pinned-up hair
I'm sure that you got a wife out there, Kids and Christmas, but I'm unaware
'Cause I'm right where, I cause no harm, mind my business
If our love died young, I can't bear witness, And it's been so long
But if you ever think you got it wrong, I'm right where you left me ...
You left me no, oh, you left me no ...
You left me no choice but to stay here forever ...
You left me, You left me no, oh, you left me no ...
You left me no choice but to stay here forever ...
(Taylor Swift)

Is coffee in a cardboard cup.
The trouble with the affluent society
Is coffee in a cardboard cup.
No one's ever casual and nonchalant,
No one waits a minute in a restaurant,
No one wants a waitress passing pleasantries
Like "How're you, Miss?"
"How're you, Sir?"
"May I take your order please?"
The trouble with the world today is plain to see,
Is everything is hurry up.
It's rush it through, and don't be slow,
And BLT on rye to go,
With coffee (I think she said)
Coffee (I know she said)
Coffee in a cardboard cup.
The trouble with the helter-skelter life we lead
Is coffee in a cardboard cup.
The trouble, the psychologists have all agreed,
Is coffee in a cardboard cup.
Tell me, what could possibly be drearier
Than seafood from the Belnord cafeteria?
Seems to me a gentleman would much prefer
"Afternoon!"
"How've you been?"
"Would you like the special, sir?"
The trouble with the world today is plain to see,
Is everything is hurry up.
There's ready-wear, and instant tea,
And minute rice, and my oh me,
There's coffee (I think she said)
Coffee (I know she said)
Coffee in a cardboard cup.
The trouble with the world today, beyond a doubt,
Is coffee in a cardboard cup.
The trouble is the way we like to take things out,
Like coffee in a cardboard cup.
No one knows the meaning of utopia
Is dining at the corner cornucopia,
Seems to me we wouldn't be such nervous wrecks
With "Hello, there!"
"Be right back!"
"Would you care for separate checks?"
The trouble with the world today is plain to see,
Is everything is hurry up.
It's all become looney tunes
With sugar packs and plastic spoons
And coffee (I think she said)
Coffee (I know she said)
Coffee (I'm sure she said)
Coffee (She must have said)
Coffee in a cardboard cup.
(from the Kander & Ebb show "70, Girls, 70")

"Sugar and milk, Ma! ... Sugar and milk, Ma!"
Then I got older, I'm not sure how, but it's happening to me
Standing up here on this stage in a ruffled shirt, Thinking 'bout when I was younger
Running down the sidewalk, Running full speed down the end of the street saying ...
"Come on boys, we're all digging to China"
Ohhh, but now I'm older, brighter, wise beyond my years ...
Least I feel that way when I got my hot coffee in a paper cup
Burning my lip, May catch a fit if I don't take a sip
But I've got that cold, cold cream to smooth it out-some
Spoonful of sugar, spoonful of sugar, Help that medicine go down
Stick in the mud, And now I'm watching the suds ...
Spin around and around and around, around, around, around
Running down the sidewalk, Bahhh, I missed my bus!
But now the 219 ain't the only thing, That I'm waiting on to come pick me up
'Cause I'm older, brighter, wise beyond my years ...
Least I feel that way when I got my hot coffee in a paper cup
Running down the sidewalk, Running full speed down the end of the street
But now the 219, well ain't the only thing, That I'm waiting on to come pick me up
'Cause I'm older, brighter, wise beyond my years ...
Least I feel that way when I got my hot coffee in a paper cup ...
Ohhh, least I feel that way when I got my hot coffee in a paper cup
(Ryan Montbleau)

Once upon a time I found a garden
Picked the brightest things that I could see
An apron full of Mr Harding's flowers
I didn't know that he was watching me
Straight away my mother ran to tell him
Wondering what he would say or do
Mr Harding smiled and said "She's just a little child
I knew that she'd be picking them for you"
By the fire my dad would tell me stories
One of them concerned a garden too
Where the lion and the lamb lay down together
And every lovely fruit and flower grew
The Gardener sent his children in to play there
Rejoicing in the brightness of the day
But when they went exploring and took a fruit to taste
He cursed them both and sent them on their way
Even then I realised in my childish mind
That he wasn't a proper gardener of the Mr Harding kind
Mr Harding's garden was all taken
By lesser men with concrete in their minds
Factory chimneys grew instead of daisies
No butterflies from that assembly line
My mother faded faster than a flower
Dad sat in the darkness and cried
Mr Harding moves a little slower than before
But still he tends the grave where they both lie
Wherever it is they've gone to I hope that they will find
A proper sort of garden of the Mr Harding kind
The foolish woman sometimes feels despairing
And thinks it seems so very hard to find
The child tries to plant a little everywhere she goes
That special love of the Mr Harding kind
Some day when I'm older maybe I will find
That I've grown into a gardener of the Mr Harding kind
(Maggie Holland)

How do you say to your child in the night, "Nothing's all black, but then nothing's all white"
How do you say "It will all be alright", When you know that it might not be true ...
What do you do?
Careful the things you say, Children will listen
Careful the things you do, Children will see, and learn
Children may not obey, But children will listen
Children will look to you, For which way to turn
To learn what to be, Careful before you say, "Listen to me" ...
Children will listen
Careful the wish you make, Wishes are children
Careful the path they take, Wishes come true, not free
Careful the spell you cast, Not just on children
Sometimes the spell may last, Past what you can see, And turn against you
Careful the tale you tell, That is the spell ...
Children will listen
How can you say to a child who's in flight, "Don't slip away and I won't hold so tight"?
What can you say that no matter how slight, Won't be misunderstood?
What do you leave to your child when you're dead?, Only whatever you put in it's head
Things that your mother and father had said, Which were left to them too
Careful what you say, Children will listen
Careful you do it too, Children will see, and learn
Guide them but step away, Children will glisten
Tamper with what is true, And children will turn, If just to be free
Careful before you say, "Listen to me" ...
Children will listen ... Children will listen
Children, children will listen
(Barbra Streisand)

Oh, listen to the children while they play
Now ain't it kinda funny What the children say
Skip a rope
Daddy hates mommy, mommy hates dad
Last night you shoulda heard
The fight they had
Gave little sister another bad dream
She woke us all up with a terrible scream
Skip a rope, skip a rope
Oh, listen to the children while they play
Now ain't it kinda funny What the children say?
Skip a rope
Cheat on your taxes, don't be a fool
Now what was that they said about a golden rule?
Never mind the rules just play to win
And hate your neighbor for the shade of his skin
Skip a rope, skip a rope
Oh, listen to the children while they play
Now ain't it kinda funny What the children say?
Skip a rope
Stab 'em in the back that's the name of the game
And mommy and daddy are who's to blame
Skip a rope, skip a rope
Just listen to your children while they play
It's really not very funny what the children say
Skip a rope, skip a rope
Skip a rope, skip a rope
(Henson Cargill)

Chasing birds down by the lake in the mud
We would climb up in the trees, Up high among the leaves
We were wild and we were free when we were young
But now we're older, And we feel the world at our feet
As time turns we drift away ... Wish we were young again ...
We built castles in the sand, Felt like emperors of the land
Making walls to stop the waves from coming up
We found joy in the little things, Like imaginary scenes
Oh I miss the way we were when we were young
But now we're older, And we feel the world at our feet
As time turns we drift away ...
And oh how times flies, Then you realize forgotten dreams, Got lost along the way
Wish we were young again ... Wish we were young again ...
But there's still so much to see, In this life in front of me
Like pages of a book still unturned
We could sail the seven seas, Even raise a family
We could dream just like we did when we were young
'Cause now we're older, And we feel the world at our feet
As time turns we drift away ...
And oh how time flies, Then you realise forgotten dreams, Got lost along the way
Wish we were young again ... Wish we were young again ...
(Hollow Coves)

Used to think we live forever
Flying free beneath the sun
Days go running and hiding
The weeks are going slippy and sliding
Years leave quicker every time they come
Remember when we were young
Look back to the best of days
Collecting all yesterdays
As they built up one by one
Oh how we beg and we borrow
Say we do it tomorrow
But tomorrow never seems to come
We used to never say never
Used to think we live forever
Flying free beneath the sun
Days go running and hiding
The weeks are going slippy and sliding
Years leave quicker every time they come
Remember when we were young
And we were boys on the beach
Everything was in reach
I know it's hard to remember
And all had the years they vanish
I always wanted to learn Spanish
And travel round South-America
We used to never say never
Used to think we live forever
Flying free beneath the sun
Days go running and hiding
The weeks are going slippy and sliding
Years leave quicker every time they come
Do you remember when we were young?
We used to never say never
Used to think we live forever
Flying free beneath the sun
Days go running and hiding
The weeks are going slippy and sliding yeah
Years leave quicker every time they come
Do you remember when we were young?
Do you remember when we were young?
Do you remember when we were young?
Do you remember when we were young?
(Passenger)

A colorful miracle ... Remember how everything was so beautiful?
I miss the old days when the skies were blue, I miss the long nights stayin' up with you
I miss the summer 'cause we were in it together
I miss my hometown, don't you miss it too? Drivin' to nowhere, nothin' else to do
I miss the old days, I wish they lasted forever
When we were young, it seemed that life was so wonderful
A colorful miracle ... Remember how everything was so beautiful?
Whoa, when we were young, it seemed that life was so simple then
So innocent, infinite ... Look at us now, it's so different, isn't it?
Whoa, when we were young, it seemed that life was so wonderful
A colorful miracle ... Remember how everything was so beautiful?
Whoa, when we were young, it seemed that life was so simple then
So innocent, infinite ... Look at us now, it's so different, isn't it?
I miss the ocean, the hair across your face, The little moments before we moved away
And lookin' back now, we shoulda stayed there forever
And now we're over the moon and we're under the stars ...
Know where we've been and we know who we are ...
And even as time goes by, I'll always remember ...
When we were young, it seemed that life was so wonderful
A colorful miracle ... Remember how everything was so beautiful?
Whoa, when we were young, it seemed that life was so simple then
So innocent, infinite ... Look at us now, it's so different, isn't it?
(David Guetta feat. Kim Petras)

Memories
Light the corners of my mind
Misty water-colored memories
Of the way we were
Scattered pictures
Of the smiles we left behind
Smiles we gave to one another
For the way we were
Can it be that
It was all so simple then?
Or has time re-written every line?
If we had the chance to do it all again
Tell me, would we?
Could we?
Memories
May be beautiful and yet
What's too painful to remember
We simply choose to forget
[Outro]
So it's the laughter
We will remember
Whenever we remember
The way we were
The way we were
Hmmmmm hmmmmm
Hmm hmm hmmmmmm hmmm hmmm hmm hmm
Hmmm hmmm hmmmmm hmmmmm hmmmmmmmmmmm
(Barbra Streisand - still love that film!)

To what I can't seem to hold on to
The life we used to live is slipping through my fingertips
Like a thread that's unraveling
I suppose that nothing lasts forever ... and everything is lost in its time ...
When I can't find the words that I'm trying to speak
When I don't know the face in the mirror I see
When I feel I'm forgotten and lost in this world
Won't you please? ... remember me? ... remember me
I know there'll come a day, when I have gone away
And the memory of me will fade
But, darling, think of me, and who I used to be
And I'll be right there with you again
I hope I'm one thing worth not forgetting ... Tell me that you'll never let me go ...
When I can't find the words that I'm trying to speak
When I don't know the face in the mirror I see
When I feel I'm forgotten and lost in this world
Won't you please? ... remember me? ... remember me ... remember me ... remember me
I hope I'm one thing worth not forgetting ... Tell me that you'll never let me go ...
When I can't find the words that I'm trying to speak
When I don't know the face in the mirror I see
When I feel like I'm lost and alone in this world
Won't you please? ... remember me? ... remember me ... remember me ... remember me
I am a huge fan of Chris Mann including this beautiful and incredibly heart-rending song that he co-wrote and sang to help promote awareness and raise funds for CAF (Cure Alzheimer’s Fund) ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wv1bf...

But in the room where Clare is dying, no sunshine sends the shadows flying
No children gather round her crying, there's no one there at all
Except perhaps for the man who sees each little sparrow fall
Don't talk to me about lonely souls crying, dark quiet rooms with old people dying
I don't want to hear, I don't want to hear it at all
Tired old people die alone every day, don't blame me, I didn't make it that way
That's just how it is, don't look for a reason at all
Winter weeping on the city, a wet and windy day in Sydney
Rain drops rolling fat and heavy down Clare's window pane
The raindrops on the tin roof beating, disturbing rats as they are feeding
Back to the nest they all go creeping, leaving Clare alone again
It's been a long and lonely time since Clare could hear the rain
Don't talk to me about the meaning of life; don't sing your songs that cut like a knife
I don't want to hear, I don't want to hear it at all
Lonely old people ain't my concern, from dust we come
To dust we return and that's all there is, don't look for a reason in it all
Spring has come at last to Sydney; flowers are blooming in the city
In all their multicoloured glory, they rise to greet the year
Memories in chain recalling, footsteps on the front porch falling
Voices through the window calling, is anybody here
Clare Candle's lost and lonely soul is a long, long way from here
Don't talk to me about life's seasons, don't ask me for answers
Don't ask me for reasons. I don't want to hear, I don't want to hear it at all
From the moment we're born, we start to die; a man can go crazy if he keeps asking why
That's just how it is, don't look for a reason at all
Can't you understand what I'm trying to say, there must an answer;
There must be a way to make some sense of it, to try to find a reason for it all
We are not born just so we can die, there must be an answer and
We've got to try to make some sense of it; to try to find a reason for it all
Can't you understand what I'm trying to say, there must an answer;
There must be a way to make some sense of it, to try to find a reason for it all
We are not born just so we can die, there must be an answer and
We've got to try to make some sense of it; to try to find a reason for it all
That's just how it is, don't look for a reason at all
Ah, there must a way, there must be reason for it all
(Eric Bogle)

And getting up late on Sundays, I never get to mass
It′s a long, long way from Clare to here, It's a long, long way from Clare to here
Ohhh, it's a long, long way; it gets further day-by-day ...
It′s a long, long way from Clare to here
When Friday night comes around, And he′s only into fighting
My Ma would like a letter home, But I'm too tired for writing
It′s a long, long way from Clare to here, It's a long, long way from Clare to here
Ohhh, it′s a long, long way; it gets further day-by-day ...
It's a long, long way from Clare to here
And the only time that I feel alright, Is when I′m into drinking
It eases off the pain a bit, And levels out my thinking
It's a long, long way from Clare to here, It's a long, long way from Clare to here
Ohhh, it′s a long, long way; it gets further day-by-day ...
It′s a long, long way from Clare to here
When it almost breaks my heart, When I think of Josephine
I promised I'd be coming back, With pockets full of green
It′s a long, long way from Clare to here, It's a long, long way from Clare to here
Ohhh, it′s a long, long way; it gets further day-by-day ...
It's a long, long way from Clare to here
I dream I hear a piper play, Maybe it's a notion?
I dream I see white horses dance, On that other ocean
It′s a long, long way from Clare to here, It′s a long, long way from Clare to here
Ohhh, it's a long, long way; it gets further day-by-day ...
It′s a long, long way from Clare to here
(The Fureys & Davey Arthur)

But they always remind me
Of faces and places
I left long ago
My hills are much bluer
As blue as my tears
I can almost see Ireland from here
Kentucky is the bluebird
With wings on my mind
And the rivers and valleys
Look so much like home
And though she sings sweetly
It's sad to my ears
I can almost see Ireland from here.
It's hard to find sunshine
As bright as my daydreams
It's beautiful here
But there's no place like home
On hushed wings of dreaming
Through soft mist of springtime,
I can almost see Ireland from here.
The view from the mountain
The cry of the eagle
Brings a song to my heart
But it dies on my tongue
And on mornings like this
When the memories are clear
I can almost see Ireland from here
It's hard to find sunshine
As bright as my daydreams
It's beautiful here
But there's no place like home
On hushed wings of dreaming
Through soft mist of springtime
I can almost see Ireland from here
And on mornings like this
When the memories are clear
I can almost see Ireland from here

(Speaking of County Clare, I've recently read This Is Happiness by Niall Williams and absolutely loved it. Highly recommended!!)

But everywhere I go I think of home and hope that all remains the same
Oh when you’re travelling landscapes change, the faces fade, noone here knows my name
But in the nightly gloom, I find the moon, and soon I hear your voice again ...
Ohhh nothing’s changed ...
So I just wrote to let you know ... that it’s time for me to go ...
Even though I wish I could remain I won’t be coming round this way again ...
Mama won’t you take this whiskey from me, I’ve been drinking far too long
The sun’s too high, the road’s too long, and I’m too drunk to know my right from wrong
And if I could I’d find some land, we’d have a child, a baby, on the lawn
But, honey, I’m a travelling man and I’ll have up and left you come the dawn
So I just wrote to let you know ... that if I could I wouldn’t go ...
Tell my ma I love her just the same but I’m leaving on the 7:30 train ...
Honey, life can get a little lonely living like a rolling stone
Oh and sitting by my fire tonight, I must confess, I’ve never felt so far from home
One day, baby, I’ll come home, I’ll have you seated on my knee
But until that day I need you to promise that you’ll sit and wait for me
Can’t you see that I need to know ... that wherever I will roam ...
There will always be a fire burning waiting for your traveller to come home ...
There will always be a fire burning waiting for your baby to come home ...
(Katherine Priddy)

And your path is free to walk
That makes me tend to leave my sleepin' bag
Rolled up and stashed behind your couch
And it's knowin' I'm not shackled by forgotten words and bonds
And the ink stains that are dried upon some line
That keeps you in the backroads by the rivers of my memory
It keeps you ever gentle on my mind
It's not clingin' to the rocks and ivy
Planted on their columns now that bind me
Or something that somebody said
Because they thought we fit together walkin'
It's just knowing that the world will not be cursing
Or forgiving when I walk along some railroad track and find
That you're movin' on the backroads by the rivers of my memory
And for hours you're just gentle on my mind
Though the wheat fields and the clotheslines
And the junkyards and the highways come between us
And some other woman's cryin' to her mother
'Cause she turned and I was gone
I still might run in silence, tears of joy might stain my face
And the summer sun might burn me 'til I'm blind
But not to where I cannot see you walkin' on the backroads
By the rivers flowing gentle on my mind
(John Hartford)

I might hang my hat and hang around for a little while
You're all alone with no one to hold, But that ring you wear is solid gold
Ever since the day I walked you down the aisle
I'm driftwood, I'm a tumbleweed, I ride the wind like a wildwood seed
Beneath the midnight moon I think of us
A heart like yours is hard to find, You're always gentle on my mind
But if these wheels don't turn they'll start to rust
While I'm rockin' and a'rollin' like a rolling stone
On a big rig rollin' down a long and lonely road
Up and under highways, high wires, and high line poles
You're my rock and I'm your rolling stone
It's a brand new song, same ol' verse, This black top blessing is a curse
But you know I've come too far to turn back now
Week after week, mile after mile, You save me with your sacred smile
And you love me still but, Lord, I don't know how ... I don't know how ...
While I'm rockin' and a'rollin' like a rolling stone
On a big rig rollin' down a long and lonely road
Up and under highways, high wires, and high line poles
You're my rock and I'm your rolling stone
While I'm rockin' and a'rollin' like a rolling stone
On a big rig rollin' down a long and lonely road
Up and under highways, high wires, and high line poles
You're my rock and I'm your rolling stone ... Baby, you're my rock and I'm your rolling stone ...
You know I'd rather be holding you than holding this old guitar
I play your heart like a sad song while I chase this distant star
You know my heart's always at home and this highway's always blue
Over my endless love affair with this old guitar and you
You know I'd rather be holding you than holding this old guitar
I play your heart like a sad song while I chase this distant star
You know my heart's always at home and this highway's always blue
Over my endless love affair with this old guitar and you ... And you ... And you ...
(Aaron Watson)

We were gonna meet again and wait
So I'm goin' to unpack all my things
And sit before it gets too late
No man alive will come to you
With another tale to tell
But you know that we shall meet again
If your memory serves you well
This wheel's on fire
Rolling down the road
Best notify my next of kin
This wheel shall explode
If your memory serves you well
I was gonna confiscate your lace
And wrap it up in a sailor's knot
And hide it in your case
If I knew for sure that it was yours
But it was oh so hard to tell
And you know that we shall meet again
If your memory serves you well
This wheel's on fire
Rolling down the road
Best notify my next of kin
This wheel shall explode
If your memory serves you well
You'll remember that you're the one
That called on me to call on them
To give you your favors done
And after every plan had failed
And there was nothing more to tell
You knew that we would meet again
If your memory served you well
This wheel's on fire
Rolling down the road
Best notify my next of kin
This wheel shall explode
If your memory serves you well
If your memory serves you well
(Bob Dylan)

H: I was on time ... M: No, you were late
H: Ahhh, yes, I remember it well
H: We dined with friends ... M: We dined alone
H: A tenor sang ... M: A baritone
H: Ahhh, yes, I remember it well
H: That dazzling April moon! ... M: There was none that night, And the month was June
H: That′s right. That's right.
M: It warms my heart to know that you, Remember still the way you do
H: Ahhh, yes, I remember it well
H: How often I′ve thought of that Friday ... M: Monday
H: ... night, when we had our last rendezvous.
And somehow I foolishly wondered, If you might, By some chance, be thinking of it too?
H: That carriage ride ... M: You walked me home
H: You lost a glove ... M: I lost a comb
H: Ahhh, yes, I remember it well
H: That brilliant sky ... M: We had some rain
H: Those Russian songs ... M: From sunny Spain?
H: Ahhh, yes, yes, I remember it well
H: You wore a gown of gold ... M: I was all in blue
H: Am I getting old? ... M: Ohhh, no, not you
How strong you were, How young and gay, A prince of love in every way
H: Ahhh, yes ... I remember it well
(Honoré Lachaille (H): Maurice Chevalier & Madame Alvarez (M): Hermione Gingold in Gigi)

I never gave it a second thought
Until one day along came this old man
And this is what he said to me
Yes, this is what he said to me:
I know what it is to be young
But you, you don’t know what it is to be old
Someday, you’ll be saying the same thing
Time takes away, so the story is told
I’ve asked so many questions
To the wise men I’ve met
Couldn’t find all the answers
No one has, as yet
There’ll be days to remember
Full of laughter and tears
After summer, comes winter
So go the years
So my friend,
Let's make music together
I’ll play the old
While you sing me the new
In time
When your young days are over
There’ll be someone
Sharing their time with you
There’ll be someone
Sharing their time with you
