Gordon (skiiltan) | 2940 comments There's power in a factory, power in the land,
Power in the hands of the worker.
But it all amounts to nothing if together we don't stand:
There is power in a union.

Now the lessons of the past were all learned with workers' blood;
Mistakes of the bosses we must pay for.
From the cities and the farmlands to trenches full of mud,
War has always been the bosses' way, sir.

The union forever defending our rights.
Down with the blackleg, all workers unite
With our brothers and our sisters from many far off lands:
There is power in a union.

Now I long for the morning that they realise
Brutality and unjust laws can not defeat us.
But who'll defend the workers who cannot organise
When the bosses send their lackeys out to cheat us?

Money speaks for money, the Devil for his own.
Who comes to speak for the skin and the bone?
With a comfort to the widow, a light for the child:
There is power in a union.

The Union forever defending our rights.
Down with the blackleg, all workers unite
With our brothers and our sisters, together we will stand:
There is power in a union.

Martin O' | 2196 comments When you hear this sound a-comin'
Hear the drummer drummin'
Won't you join together with the band
We dont move in any 'ticular direction
And we don't make no collections
Won't you join together with the band
Do you really think I care
What you eat or what you wear
Won't you join together with the band
There's a million ways to laugh
Ev'ry one's a path
Won't you join together with the band

Craig White | 6727 comments Did I tell you I'm in a band
And I can do handstands too
I got this burning desire
To don that darling attire
How that elastic snaps
Against my kneecaps
I wanna wiggle into
Your powdered rubber skin...ooh

Baby, you got the clothes
You got romance
You got the boots
So, I just gotta ask
Can I get in your pants?
Can I get in your pants?
I wanna get in your pants
I wanna get in your pants

suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments Small town homecoming queen, She's the star in this scene
There's no way to deny she's lovely
Perfect skin, perfect hair, Perfumed hearts everywhere
Tell myself that inside she's ugly
Maybe I'm just jealous? I can't help but hate her
Secretly I wonder if my boyfriend wants to date her?

She is the prom queen, I'm in the marching band
She is a cheerleader, I'm sitting in the stands
She gets the top bunk, I'm sleeping on the floor
She's Miss America ... and I'm just the girl next door ...

Senior class president, She must be heaven-sent
She was never the last one standing
A backseat debutante, Everything that you want
Never too harsh or too demanding
Maybe I'll admit it? I'm a little bitter?
Everybody loves her but I just wanna hit her!

She is the prom queen, I'm in the marching band
She is a cheerleader, I'm sitting in the stands
She gets the top bunk, I'm sleeping on the floor
She's Miss America ... and I'm just the girl next door ...
Ohhh, and I'm just the girl next door

I don't know why I'm feeling sorry for myself? ...
I spend all my time wishing that I was someone else ...

She is the prom queen, I'm in the marching band
She is a cheerleader, I'm sitting in the stands
I get a little bit, she gets a little more
She's Miss America ... She's Miss America ... I'm just the girl next door ...
Ohhh, I'm just the girl next door ... I'm just the girl next door ...

Val H. | 22152 comments You were the apple of the public's eye as you cut the ribbon at the local mall
A mirage for both you and us. How can it be real?
We love your body in that photograph, your home state sure must be proud
The queen of the United States, or have you lost your crown

Well aren't you Miss America
Don't you Miss America
Won't you Miss America
Our love

Well are you really who we think you are
Or does that smile seem to wear you down
This girl who you once were is screaming jump out
This dream that you must live - a disease for which there is no cure
This roller coaster ride you're on won't stop to let you off

Well aren't you Miss America
Don't you Miss America
Won't you Miss America
Our love

Miss America, Miss America
Miss America, Miss America

Well it's true just take a look - The cover sometimes makes the book
And the judges, do they ever ask to read between your lines
And in your cage at the human zoo, they all stop to look at you
Next year, what will you do when you have been forgotten

Well aren't you Miss America
Don't you Miss America
Won't you Miss America
Our love

Craig White | 6727 comments When I heard you
In my room last night
Lonely lemur calls
In my walls last night
When I was all alone
In the palm drunken night
When I was all alone
Bejeweled in the night
Pulsing we are hearts
But bleeding unlike diamonds
Tying up ourselves
But bleeding unlike diamonds
And it's bad
But, it is bad America
Under the western sky

suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments Diamonds are forever, They are all I need to please me
They can stimulate and tease me ...
They won't leave in the night, I've no fear that they might, desert me

Diamonds are forever, Hold one up and then caress it
Touch it, stroke it, and undress it ...
I can see ev'ry part, Nothing hides in the heart, to hurt me

I don't need love, For what good is your love to me?
Diamonds never lie to me, For when love's gone ... They'll lustre on

Diamonds are forever, Sparkling round my little finger
Unlike men, the diamonds linger ...
Men are mere mortals who, Are not worth going to, your grave for

I don't need love, For what good will love do me?
Diamonds never lie to me, For when love's gone ... They'll lustre on

Diamonds are forever, forever, forever ...
Diamonds are forever, forever, forever ...
Forever ... and ever

Martin O' | 2196 comments The French are glad to die for love
They delight in fighting duels
But I prefer a man who lives
And gives expensive jewels

A kiss on the hand may be quite continental
But diamonds are a girl's best friend
A kiss may be grand but it won't pay the rental
On your humble flat, or help you at the automat
Men grow cold as girls grow old
And we all lose our charms in the end
But square cut or pear shaped
These rocks don't lose their shape
Diamonds are a girl's best friend

Gordon (skiiltan) | 2940 comments Upon the white veranda
She wears a necktie and a Panama hat.
Her passport shows a face
From another time and place:
She looks nothin’ like that.
And all the remnants of her recent past
Are scattered in the wild wind.
She walks across the marble floor,
Where a voice from the gambling room is callin’ her to come on in.
She smiles, walks the other way,
As the last ship sails and the moon fades away
From Black Diamond Bay.

As the mornin’ light breaks open, the Greek comes down
And he asks for a rope and a pen that will write.
“Pardon, monsieur,” the desk clerk says,
Carefully removes his fez,
“Am I hearin’ you right?”
And as the yellow fog is liftin’
The Greek is quickly headin’ for the second floor.
She passes him on the spiral staircase,
Thinkin’ he’s the Soviet Ambassador.
She starts to speak, but he walks away,
As the storm clouds rise and the palm branches sway
On Black Diamond Bay.

A soldier sits beneath the fan
Doin’ business with a tiny man who sells him a ring.
Lightning strikes, the lights blow out,
The desk clerk wakes and begins to shout,
“Can you see anything?”
Then the Greek appears on the second floor
In his bare feet with a rope around his neck,
While a loser in the gambling room lights up a candle
And says, “Open up another deck.”
But the dealer says, “Attendez-vous, s’il vous plait,"
As the rain beats down and the cranes fly away
From Black Diamond Bay.

The desk clerk heard the woman laugh
As he looked around the aftermath and the soldier got tough.
He tried to grab the woman’s hand,
Said, “Here’s a ring, it cost a grand!”
She said, “That ain’t enough.”
Then she ran upstairs to pack her bags
While a horse-drawn taxi waited at the kerb.
She passed the door that the Greek had locked,
Where a handwritten sign read, “Do Not Disturb”.
She knocked upon it anyway,
As the sun went down and the music did play
On Black Diamond Bay.

“I’ve got to talk to someone quick!”
But the Greek said, “Go away,” and kicked the chair to the floor.
He hung there from the chandelier;
She cried, “Help, there’s danger near!
Please open up the door!”
Then the volcano erupted
And the lava flowed down from the mountain high above.
The soldier and the tiny man were crouched in the corner
Thinking of forbidden love.
But the desk clerk said, “It happens every day,”
As the stars fell down and the fields burned away
On Black Diamond Bay.

As the island slowly sank
The loser finally broke the bank in the gambling room.
The dealer said, “It’s too late now:
You can take your money, but I don’t know how
You’ll spend it in the tomb.”
The tiny man bit the soldier’s ear
As the floor caved in and the boiler in the basement blew.
While she’s out on the balcony, where a stranger tells her,
“My darling, je vous aime beaucoup.”
She sheds a tear and then begins to pray,
As the fire burns on and the smoke drifts away
From Black Diamond Bay.

I was sittin’ home alone one night in L.A.
Watchin’ old Cronkite on the seven o’clock news.
It seems there was an earthquake that
Left nothin’ but a Panama hat
And a pair of old Greek shoes.
Didn’t seem like much was happenin’,
So I turned it off and went to grab another beer.
Seems like every time you turn around
There’s another hard-luck story that you’re gonna hear.
And there’s really nothin’ anyone can say.
And I never did plan to go anyway
To Black Diamond Bay.

(Bob Dylan)

My baby's the pearl of the quarter
She's a charmer like you've never seen

Red beans and rice for a quarter
You can see her almost any day
Singing voulez vous

suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments I spent a thousand sleepless nights, In wait of dreams I could not find
I walked a thousand empty roads, In search of signs to bring me home
With every breath I spoke your name, And heard it rolling in the waves
Beneath a veil of ocean blue, I broke illusion from the truth

You said, walk to me and I'll find you, Call me and I'll show you
Hiding like a pearl for you, To heal and guide you
From deep inside you, Hiding like a pearl for you

And from the pulse beneath my skin, You called me to a source within
Where every layer revealed one more, A secret brighter than before
And at the heart there lay just one, The root of all that I'd become
I watched the surface start to break, Free of form, free of shape

You said, walk to me and I'll run to you, Call me and I'll show you
Hiding like a pearl for you, To heal and guide you
From deep inside you, Hiding like a pearl for you

Val H. | 22152 comments Just back-flipping over you Suzy cos I love this number (a one-off collaboration between two of my favourite artists, Mick Thomas and Adam Gibson) and it sort of ties in with Gordon & Martin's themes)

He came from South Australia she was from Eastern Europe
And they met in south-east Asia
And often that'll do it
Sometimes you've come so far that you can't go back again
Sometimes you've come so far that you can't go back again

Yeah the story went it was '75 he'd said so long Saigon
Got out in the second-last airlift
Memories of the Caravelle drinks with Neil Davis
Those beers he had before he was famous
And a pesky lawyer calling in from Melbourne
Asking about some money owed to someone somewhere somehow

Yeah so he'd said south China see you later
Went over to Nias Indonesia
Surfed the wave in its prime
Then across Sumatra dodging Suharto
Thought his tricks were definitely up this time
Thought his game was definitely up this time

So he washed up in Boracay in a boat called the Floating Stone
Flower blooms and unmade rooms
He was a good eleven-and-a-half years from home
A good eleven-and-a-half years from home
And there among the faded signs and the suntan lines
The lost hippies from the Appenines
He took up residence in the Red Pirate Bar
Sometimes you've come so far that you can't go back again
Sometimes you've come so far that you can't go back again

She had cheekbones that would make any man immediately change his plan
With a face like that in the Phillipine night you'd never know where you stand
You'd never know where you stand
She was earning US dollars in a job she didn't care to define
While he propped at the bar of the Pirate and he waited for a sign
He waited for a signal a nod of any note
It's not the heat it's the humidity
It's not the heat it's the humidity
That'll bring undone any bloke

He came from South Australia she was from Eastern Europe
And they met in south-east Asia
And often that'll do it
Sometimes you've come so far that you can't go back again
Sometimes you've come so far that you can't go back again

Val H. | 22152 comments Thanks Suzy - Olga Korbut eat your heart out!

Here's a different "Pearl"

It's been 20 years since Janis, it was a bad year for the young
Wasted lives and bitter vibes and the best songs left unsung
I played the music over till I thought I understood
Hell can look like heaven when your vision has been blurred

And everyone said tragedy and an awful goddam shame
And they said she'd live forever in the martyrs’ hall of fame
I was just a kid in high school when I heard that she had died
And like the man once said I can't remember if I cried

CHORUS:
The Pearl shone with a lustre only she could fail to see
But the rebel’s bluff bravado hid a frightened woman's need
She only wanted a Mercedes Benz and a night out on the town
But oh cheap thrills took her down

27 summers and it seemed she'd just begun
The big time took her high but then she flew too near the sun
She almost had it in her hand when she slipped and fell to ground
She was looking for the home she never found

CHORUS:
The Pearl shone with a lustre only she could fail to see
But the rebel’s bluff bravado hid a frightened woman's need
She only wanted a Mercedes Benz and a night out on the town
But oh cheap thrills took her down

They made a film about her and wrote books that told it all
The highs the hopes the promises that came before the fall
They took a little piece of her heart and it snapped under the strain
And the fame was just another ball and chain

CHORUS:
The Pearl shone with a lustre only she could fail to see
But the rebel’s bluff bravado hid a frightened woman's need
She only wanted a Mercedes Benz and a night out on the town
But oh cheap thrills took her down

suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments Somewhere deep in the scarlet city, A million dreams are not enough
I'm knee-deep in fallen women, Being alone in the scarlet city can be tough
Call me romantic, Call me deluded, I'd give you anything you asked, Just for a second of your time
I could be your guardian angel, When it comes to pleasure I could be your guide
Call me romantic, Call me deluded, Well I've seen the sights of New York, I've seen day become night
I've seen the Brooklyn Bridge all covered in lights, I've dived to the depths, I've scaled the heights
Call me romantic, Call me deluded, I've had it all

But I'll give you the most valuable thing in the world, I'll give you my very last pearl
I'll give you the most magical thing in the world, I'll give you my very last pearl
For this could be the magic, For this could be the magic, For this could be the magic,
For this could be the magic, This could be the magic, This could be the magic
The very last pearl, Make a wish on the, Very last pearl in the world, The very last pearl

Somewhere deep in the scarlet city, Waits the key to all my dreams
You're the cure for someone jaded, Someone jaded, someone just like me it seems
Call me romantic, Call me deluded, I want to be your angel, I want to be your angel
Call me romantic, Call me deluded, I've seen a Mediterranean night, The ships on the sea
The most beautiful eyes in the world, And the saddest eyes in the world
Call me romantic, Call me deluded, But I didn't care at all

But I'll give you the most valuable thing in the world, I'll give you my very last pearl
I'll give you the most magical thing in the world, I'll give you my very last pearl

I didn't give her what she likes
I don't know what to tell her,
Don't know what to say
Everything got funky last night
She was really bombed,
And I was really blown away,
Until I asked her what she wanted,
And this is what she had to say:
A pearl necklace
She want to pearl necklace
She want to pearl necklace
She gets a charge out of bein' so weird,
Digs gettin' downright strange
But I can keep a handle on anything,
Just this side of deranged
She was gettin' bombed,
And I was gettin' blown away,
And she held it in her hand
And this is what she had to say:
A pearl necklace
She want to pearl necklace
She want to pearl necklace

Val H. | 22152 comments Lindbergh left Long Island in 1927
He thumbed his nose at gravity
And climbed into the heavens
When he returned to earth that night
Everything had changed
For the pilot and the planet
Everything was rearranged

We're a pretty mixed up bunch
Of crazy human beings
It's written on our rocket ships
And in early cave wall scenes

How does it happen?
How do we know?
Who sits and watches?
Who does the show?

Some people love to lead
Some refuse to dance
Some people play it safely
Others take a chance

Still, it's all a mystery
This place we call the world
Where most live as oysters
While some become pearls

Now Elvis was the only man
From North East Mississippi
Who could shake his hips
And still be loved by
Rednecks, cops and hippies

It's something more than DNA
That tells us who we are
Its method and magic
We are of the stars

Some never fade away
Some crash and burn
Some make the world go round
Others watch it turn

Still, it's all a mystery
This place we call the world
Most are fine as oysters
While some become pearls

suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments And to think I was SO ignorant and naïve until I met you, tech, and Mr B! ;o> ...

Back in Memphis she was a pearl, She was everyone's favorite girl
Now her eyes have a vacant stare, What she wouldn't give to be livin' back there
She married a man when she left home, She wanted someone she could call her own
He was good to her when he wasn't drunk, He'd hold her and tell her how pretty she looked

Back in Memphis where she grew up, The life she knew was just not enough
Back in Memphis when she was a girl, She thought one day she'd own the world
She'd look at the TV and magazines, And she'd believe all the pictures she'd seen
She'd be wearin' silk, perfume so sweet, But those things don't mean much out here on the street

Back in Memphis she had fun, Goin' around, tellin' everyone
She was gonna buy dresses that zip up the side, wear red lipstick, have a nice car to drive
She bounces her baby on her knee, Sayin' maybe today we'll get lucky, you'll see
I promise it won't always be like this, Come here, sugar, give Mamma a kiss

Back in Memphis another time, Didn't look like things would turn out fine
Back in Memphis when she was a girl, She thought one day she'd own the world
Back in Memphis she was a pearl

(Lucinda Williams)

Val H. | 22152 comments Oh the dragons are going to fly tonight
They're circling low and inside tonight
It's another round in the losing fight
Out along the great divide tonight
We are aging soldiers in an ancient war
Seeking out some half remembered shore
We drink our fill and still we thirst for more
Asking if there's no heaven what is this hunger for?
Our path is worn our feet are poorly shod
We lift up our prayer against the odds
And fear the silence is the voice of God

And we cry Allelujah Allelujah
We cry Allelujah

Sorrow is constant and the joys are brief
The seasons come and bring no sweet relief
Time is a brutal but a careless thief
Who takes our lot but leaves behind the grief
It is the heart that kills us in the end
Just one more old broken bone that cannot mend
As it was now and ever shall be amen

And we cry Allelujah Allelujah
We cry Allelujah

So there'll be no guiding light for you and me
We are not sailors lost out on the sea
We were always headed toward eternity
Hoping for a glimpse of Galilee
Like falling stars from the universe we are hurled
Down through the long loneliness of the world
Until we behold the pain become the pearl
The pearl, the pearl

He buys me pretty pettycoats from town
He loves me on heaps of heavy gold
He calls me from way across the sea
And smooths my black boat with cream

I will lay with you in your garden
I will lay with you in your orchard, sweatheart
I will lay my life and sail across the sea

A hundred a singing mermaids with their fingers full of pearls
Will love him as he makes his way to me

She will answer all of my prayers

And he will answer all of my prayers

And we will hide there
And we will hide there
In the sanctuary of our prayers

I will go with you to your garden
I will go with you to your orchard
I will go with you to your apple tree
I will go with you to your peach tree
I will go with you to your lemon tree
I will go with you to your orange tree

Martin O' | 2196 comments Oh the night came undone like a party dress
And fell at her feet in a beautiful mess
The smoke and the whiskey came home in her curls
And they crept through the dreams of the barroom girls
Well she tosses and turns because the sun is unkind
And the heat of the day is coming in through the blinds
But eave all the blue skies for the rest of the world
Because the neon will shine for the barroom girls
Oh, the barroom girls go by your side
Like the ponies who pass on a carousel ride
And all of the colours go 'round in a swirl
When you dance in the arms of the barroom girls
Now she rolls to her feet when she can't sleep no more
And looks at her clothes lying out on the floor
Last night's spangles and yesterday's pearls
Are the bright morning stars of the barroom girls
Last night's spangles and yesterday's pearls
Are the bright morning stars of the barroom girls

suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments Oooh, child of moon, Child of light
So you sold your soul, In the dead of night?
Headlong into mystery, Love, war and greed
In the grand bazaar, In the garden of the queen
Oooh, what a wonderful scheme

All you gave me, pearls and coffins, In your usual soulless fashion
I was looking for heart and passion, But all you gave to me
Was pearls and coffins

Bridge across the valley, Arrows from the sun
You crossed me in the gully, In the mist of Avalon
Poison filled the air, The battle had begun
Machineguns blazing on, But strange, there was no sound?
Oooh, and you left me for dead

All you gave me, pearls and coffins, In your usual soulless fashion
I was looking for heart and passion, But all you gave to me
Was pearls and coffins

Val H. | 22152 comments He came dancing across the water
With his galleons and guns
Looking for the new world
And that palace in the sun.

On the shore lay Montezuma
With his coca leaves and pearls
In his halls he often wondered
With the secrets of the worlds.

And his subjects gathered round him
Like the leaves around a tree
In their clothes of many colors
For the angry gods to see.

And the women all were beautiful
And the men stood straight and strong
They offered life in sacrifice
So that others could go on.

Hate was just a legend
And war was never known
The people worked together
And they lifted many stones.

They carried them to the flatlands
But they died along the way
Then they built up with their bare hands
What we still can't do today.

And I know she's living there
And she loves me to this day
I still can't remember where
Or how I lost my way.

He came dancing across the water
Cortez, Cortez
What a killer.

There was a banquet of believers when we walked into the room
December days of Christmas felt like days in June
And there were morning lights, and sunrise chimes echoed all around
Now's the time for weary minds, the moon is northern bound

And you know I'm going back, going back today
Back to where I came from
And you know I'm going back, going back to stay
To the alleys where pearls of passion came my way

Well, there's a promise in the twilight, it's so innocent and wild
Two hearts that break the silence, you can hear a distant cry
And there's emptiness, and loneliness, it's more or less the same
Well, let's run between the raindrops, babe, and catch the midnight train

And you know I'm going back, going back today
Back to where I came from
And you know I'm going back, going back to stay
To the alleys where pearls of passion came my way

There's a train a comin'.
You don't need no baggage,
You just get on board.
All you need is faith
To hear the diesels hummin'.
You don't need no ticket,
You just thank the Lord.

So people get ready,
There'a a train to Jordan
Picking up passengers
Coast to coast.
Faith is the key:
Open the doors and board them.
There's hope for all
Among those loved the most.

There ain't no room
For the hopeless sinner,
Who would hurt all mankind
Just to save his own.
Have pity on those whose
Chances grow thinner:
There's no hiding place
Against the Kingdom's throne.

So people get ready,
There's a train a comin'.
You don't need no baggage,
You just get on board.
All you need is faith
To hear the diesels hummin'.
Don't need no ticket,
You just thank the Lord.

suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments I dreamed I saw you, brother o' mine, Riding on Josef's train
With the men of steel down the long, thin line, Riding on Josef's train
You close your eyes and the engines run, Riding on Josef's train
All the way to Rio in the red, red sun, Riding on Josef's train

And when they hear that whistle blow, Some just can't refuse
The meeting time, the greeting time, And the smell of dead men's shoes

And I dreamed I saw you, brother o' mine, Riding on Josef's train
With the men of steel down the long, thin line, Riding on Josef's train
You closed your eyes and the engines run, Riding on Josef's train
All the way to Rio in the red, red sun, Riding on Josef's train

I dreamed I met with John Wayne's ghost, Riding on Josef's train
With a peepshow queen and a heavenly host, Riding on Josef's train
He was talking to the engineer, ringing the bell, Riding on Josef's train
With a smile to the sky as the shadow fell, Riding on Josef's train

Gonna to see those lanterns burning, In the cities and the towns
Gonna to check who's on the platforms, When October comes back round

And I dreamed I saw you, brother o' mine, Riding on Josef's train
With the men of steel down the long, thin line, Riding on Josef's train
And, ohhh, my soul when they cross the borders, Riding on Josef's train
And, ohhh, my soul when they give the orders, Riding on Josef's train
Riding, riding, Riding on Josef's train, Riding, riding, Riding on Josef's train
Riding on Josef's train

Martin O' | 2196 comments Interestin' surname that. Stonier by name, Stonier by nature perhaps?

We came from the North and we came from the South
With picks and with spades and a new kind of order
Showing no fear of what lies up ahead
They'll never see the likes of us again
Driving the last spike, liftin' and layin' the track
With blistering hands and the sun burning your back
But I can hear my children's cries
I can see the tears in their eyes
Oh, memories of those I've left behind
Still ringing in my ears
'Cause I'll always remember that night
As they waved goodbye to their fathers
We followed the rail, we slept under the stars
Digging in darkness and living with danger
Showin no fear of what lies up ahead
They'll never see the likes of us again

No more will I go to Blandford Forum and Mortiehow,
On the slow train from Midsummer Norton and Mumby Row,
No churns, no porter,
No cat on a seat,
At Chorlton-cum-Hardy and Chester-le-Street
We won't be meeting again on the slow train.

I'll travel no more from Littleton Badsey to Openshaw,
At Long Stanton I'll stand well clear of the doors no more,
No whitewashed pebbles,
No up and no down,
From Thornby Four Crosses to Dunstable Town,
I won't be going again on the slow train.

On the main line and the goods siding,
The grass grows high,
At Dog Dyke, Tumby Woodside, and Troublehouse Halt.
The sleepers sleep at Audlem and Ambergate,
No passenger waits on Chittening platform of Cheslyn Hay,
No-one departs, no-one arrives,
From Selby to Goole,
From St. Erth to St. Ives,
They all passed out of our lives,
On the slow train,
On the slow train.
Cockermouth for Buttermere
On the slow train.
Armly Moor Arram
Pye Hill and Somercotes
On the slow train.

suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments That one always manages to make me a little tearful, Val ;o> ...

Train, train, train ... I've got a thing about trains ...

I get a sad kind of feeling when I see a passenger train
In this fast movin' world that we live in, nobody rides 'em much these days
Maybe I'm a little sentimental?, 'cause I know that things have to change
But I'd still like to go for a train ride, 'cause I've got a thing about trains

Train, train, train ... you're fading from the scene
But you've had your days of glory ... train, train, train

Train they say you're too slow for travelin', but I'm gonna miss you some day
When my little boy says "daddy, what was it like to ride a train?"
I'll just say "it was a good way to travel, when things didn't move quite so fast
And I'm sorry, son, that you can't ride one, the trains are the thing of the past"

Train, train, train ... you're fading from the scene
And I'm gonna mourn your passing ... train, train, train ... I've got a thing about trains

Val H. | 22152 comments Somethin' 'bout trains
Somethin' 'bout love
Somethin' 'bout this old Earth
And the way it looks from up above

Somethin' 'bout satellites
Somethin' 'bout down below
Somethin' 'bout the hissing of that old steam iron
As you press your clothes

Beam it up beam it down
Across the world from town to town
Most of the time when I'm walking the line
I'm looking at the ground

But every time I hear that whistle blowing
Every time I hear that old black crow
Every time I hear that whistle blowing
I find myself a-shivering in my soul

Somethin' 'bout love
When things go wrong
When you can't find the one that you love
You keep movin' on

You walk the lonely valley
You walk the line alone
But this old Earth is always there
You don't feel so alone

Beam it up beam it down
Across the world from town to town
Most of the time when I'm walking the line
I'm looking at the ground

But every time I hear that whistle blowing...

But you wake up in the middle of the night
And a train whistle blows and a dog barks
And something's not quite right
And the cry is sent up from this Earth
Into the silent sky

Beam it up beam it down
Across the world from town to town
Most of the time when I'm walking the line
I'm looking at the ground

But every time I hear that whistle blowing
Every time I hear that old black crow
Every time I hear that whistle blowing
I find myself a-shivering in my soul

Somethin' 'bout trains
Somethin' 'bout love
Somethin' 'bout this old Earth
And the way it looks tonight

Craig White | 6727 comments Gonna pack my suitcase
Trying to find a warmer place to spend the night
Heavy heavy rain is falling
Seems I hear your voice calling "it's all right"

Rainy night in Portland
Rainy night in Portland
Lord it's raining
All over the yown
Lord it's raining
All over the yown

Pretty girls are passing
Taxi cabs and buses running through the night
A distant morning Kingston train
Seems to sing a sad refrain
But that's all right

Rainy night in Portland
Rainy night in Portland
Lord it's raining
All over the yown
Lord it's raining
All over the yown

How many nights I wonder
It still comes out the same
No matter how you look at it
It's life
You just got to play the game

So I sit down in a box car
Play my guitar
Pass some time
Late at night I go to rest
I held your pictures to my chest
And I feel sad

suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments Midnight train rolling down the track
Taking all my dreams, never coming back
The way you look, the way you hold me tight
Midnight train where are you tonight?

Ohhh lonely, ohhh, lonely me

Midnight train so far down the line
Out of reach, always on my mind
Never know the meaning of your kiss
Midnight train must it end like this?

Midnight train going, going, gone
Beating of my heart is like a drum
Never know the meaning of your kiss
Midnight train must it end like this?

Midnight train rolling down the track
Midnight train never coming back
Midnight train so far down the line
Midnight train always on my mind

Me and my baby, we got on the midnight bus
Pulled out of Durham and left in a cloud of dust
Headed for the border of North and South Caroline
This time tomorrow she'll be mine

After we had ridden for a while on the midnight bus
We fell out and had an awful fuss
Said goodbye, I pulled the buzzer chord
I got off and the driver slammed the door

Standin' in the highway, holdin' my suitcase tight
Watching that midnight bus pull out of sight
She's gone, my baby's gone and I'm alone

Left and lost my baby on the midnight bus
Left and lost my baby on the midnight bus
She's gone, my baby's gone and I'm alone

suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments Morrissey has always been a rather too bloodthirsty and gore-obsessed Vegetarian to my mind! - and, despite all of his passionate preaching, it's still taken him well over 30 years to only just now finally commit to being a Vegan?!! ;oO

Anything can happen as we make our way home from the Club
We could both be flattened by a double-decker city Bus
Otherwise a perfect night if we're not dead before it ends
We could live forever but we'll never be this young again

Don't you worry? ... Don't think about tomorrow morning ... What's your hurry? ... Just focus on tonight ... Don't you worry? ... Don't think about tomorrow morning ... Just focus on tonight ...

We could fall in love and trade this city for a change of pace?
Find our slice of Paradise and give our babies hippie names?
Maybe we'll both hate each other? - sh***y sex 'n separate beds?
We could get restraining orders? ... Vow to never speak again?

On second thoughts, let's not say names, I'll just be me and you be you!
Two perfect strangers being sneaky with a flask of booze
No need to think of any clever pickup lines to use?
I've got a stack of records, You just bring your dancing shoes

Ohhh, you just bring your dancing shoes ... Ohhh, you just bring your dancing shoes ... Ohhh, you just bring your dancing shoes ... I've got a stack of records ... You just bring your dancing shoes ...

‘Cause tonight I'll drop the needle, Pop a bottle, sit back and just watch you dance ...
Tonight I'll drop the needle, Pop a bottle, sit back and just watch you

suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments The poor guy is clearly a Martyr to his own Mouth! ;o> ...

An Orchid is a flower that blooms so tenderly
It thrills the fairest lady of the land
If placed beside a blushing Rose, the Rose could not compare
But how was such as I to understand?

I overlooked an Orchid while searching for a Rose
The Orchid that I overlooked was you
The Rose that I was searching for has proved to be untrue
The Orchid that I found, my dear, was you

The Rose has lost its colour, but the Orchid stays the same
And I'm alone to face these lonely years
I didn't see the Orchid, I was searching for a Rose
And now I pay the price with bitter tears

I overlooked an Orchid while searching for a Rose
The Orchid that I overlooked was you
The Rose that I was searching for has proved to be untrue
The Orchid that I found, my dear, was you

The Orchid that I found, my dear, was you

Craig White | 6727 comments A sober black shawl hides her body entirely
Touched by the sun and the salt spray of the sea
But down in the darkness a slim hand so lovely
Carries a rich bunch of red roses for me

Her petticoat simple and her feet are but bare
And all that she has is but neat and scanty
But stars in the deep of her eyes are exclaiming
I carry a rich bunch of red roses for thee

No arrogant gem sits enthroned on her forehead
Or swings from a white ear for all men to see
But jewelled desire in a bosom so pearly
Carries a rich bunch of red roses for me

Carry me home, carry me home, You old sea spray
Carry me home, carry me home, You old salt spray

Sweep me up and take me with you, To see the things that stand before you
Show me all this world has for me, I want all that life can show me
I can only be what God can see

Come to carry me home, Comes to carry me home
Until he comes to carry you home

Martin O' | 2196 comments It was early, early, all in the spring
When my love, Willie, went to serve his king
The night being dark and the wind blew high
Which parted me from my sailor boy
So father, father, build me a boat
For on the ocean I mean to float
To watch the big ships as they pass by
For I might inquire for my sailor boy
She had not sailed away a week or two
When she spied a captain and all his crew
Oh, Captain, Captain, come tell me true
Does my love sail on board with you?
What was the colour of your Willie's hair?
What was the colour your Willie wear?
A light blue jacket and these trousers white
And his curly hair was my heart's delight
Ah, fair maid, fair maid, he is not here
For he's lost or drowned I am afeared
For on yon green island as we passed by
'Twas there we lost our fine sailor boy
She wrung her hands and tore her hair
Just like a lady in deep despair
She called for paper, both pen and ink
And on every line she does shed a tear
And with every line cries, "Willie dear!"
So father, father, go dig my grave
Go dig it deep and dig it wide
Place a marble stone at my head and feet
That the world may know that I died in grief

suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments ... Or perhaps the 'inland' version? ;o> ...

In London city where I did dwell, A butcher boy, I loved right well
He courted me, my life away, But now with me, he will not stay
I wish, I wish, I wish in vain, I wish I was a maid again
A maid again, I ne'er will be, 'Til cherries grow on an apple tree
I wish my baby it was born, And smiling on its daddy's knee
And me, poor girl, to be dead and gone, With long green grass growing over me

She went upstairs to go to bed, And, calling to her mother, said
"Give me a chair 'til I sit down, And a pen and ink 'til I write down"
At every word she dropped a tear, And at every line cried "Willie dear
Ohhh, what a foolish girl was I, To be led astray by a butcher boy"
He went upstairs and the door he broke, He found her hanging from a rope
He took his knife and he cut her down, And in her pocket, these words he found

"Ohhh, make my grave large, wide and deep, Put a marble stone at my head and feet
And in the middle, a turtle dove, That the world may know, that I died for love"
