Adam Mcbean Hello all. Only recently started reading and I have fallen in love with detective crime novels. Particularly authors like

Dennis Lehane
Like Delaney
Pater May
Stuart Macbride
James Oswald
Mark Billingham

Can you suggest any other authors and series novels. My favourite ever books were Luke Delaney and his character DI Sean Corrigan. I honestly can't wait until his new book is out next year.

Any advice and books appreciated.

Andrea Marx | 36 comments Loved death never sleeps EJ Simon. Sequel coming out August. Could not put down

message 3: by Angelo (new)

Angelo Marcos (angelomarcos) | 227 comments I would recommend Michael Connelly and Harlan Coben. And I'm just starting to get into Robert Crais, so would recommend him too!

message 4: by Miss M (new)

Miss M | 560 comments I second Angelo's recommendations, and would add John Sandford, Ian Rankin, and Denise Mina. All tried and true authors with lengthy back catalogues...
And Anya Lipska has two excellent London-based stories, also.

(Now I need to check out Luke Delaney.;)

Harriet (harrietstay) | 49 comments I agree with all of the recommended authors and will add a Canadian: Giles Blunt. Begin with: Forty Words for Sorrow. I have a very difficult time finding his books in the US even though I'm minutes from the Canadian border, by boat. Have you read Jo Nesbo? I, too, will have to check out Luke Delaney. A great place to check out authors is www.stopyourekillingme.com. It lists all of their works.

Forty Words for Sorrow is a good book, definitely.

Harriet (harrietstay) | 49 comments Searching through my "read" journals I came across a few others you might enjoy:
Michael Robotham - British setting, Det Insp Vincent Ruiz and Clinical psychologist Joseph O'Loughlin.

Deon Meyer - especially Thirteen Hours (received awards) - set in Cape Town, South Africa - Inspector Benny Griessel. I believe Meyer has more than one series going.

Henning Mankell - Inspector Kurt Wallander (also a BBC TV series) set in Ystad, Sweden. Ten books in series plus six one-offs. Mankell is not writing mysteries any longer.

Carol O'Connell - Police Detective computer nerd set in NYC. Many awards for this series.

John Verdon - His first was Think of a Number and I had fun with this. Protag is retired NYPD Cop living somewhere up north? Up-state NY? If you enjoy puzzles....

I've just finished a novel you might enjoy with a detective you might enjoy as well. It's Adrian McKinty's The Cold Cold Ground: A Detective Sean Duffy Novel, set in Northern Ireland in the 1980s.

message 10: by Harriet (new)

Harriet (harrietstay) | 49 comments Adrian McKinty was a finalist for the 2004 Steel Dagger Award (another series), but received two awards for the second in the Sean Duffy series. Thanks for the tip, Nancy. See below:

The Cold Cold Ground (2012)

I Hear the Sirens in the Street (2013)
Finalist 2014 Barry Award for Best Paperback
Finalist 2013 Ned Kelly Award for Best Fiction

In the Morning I’ll Be Gone (2013)

I Hear the Sirens in the Street: A Detective Sean Duffy Novel and In the Morning I'll Be Gone: A Detective Sean Duffy Novel are both on their way (as if I need more books) -- I want to read and blog about all three together. He has some nonseries books and another series, called The Dead Trilogy, but for right now, for me just The Troubles Trilogy. Thanks!

Both Elvis Cole and Joe Pike were introduced in the first book of the series, The Monkey's Raincoat (1987), and it was a PB original.

If you ever think of moving into international crime (beyond the UK and Scandinavia), you'll find a very wide range of excellent detective fiction.

I love Dennis Lehane too! I also really enjoyed Rick Riordan's "Tres Nevarre" novels. Dennis Lehane himself gave them very positive reviews. Riordan's characters are great, and the stories are both clever and quite witty.

message 28: by Simon (new)

Simon I strongly recommend Michael Robotham! He is so underrated
