Tony Morgan | 13 comments I'd like to read more historical fiction based upon the reign of the Stuarts - starting in 1603. This might cover the Gunpowder Plot, Civil War, Great the Fire of London and so on.

All recommendations gratefully received?

Irene Kessler | 39 comments Personally, I think we have had enough of both. Maybe it's time to move on.
Just my opinion, but enough has been said.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 372 comments Earthly Joys and Virgin Earth, by Philippa Gregory. They're about the John Tradescants, father and son naturalists, who were royal gardeners to James I and Charles I. Their collection of "curiousities" was the origin of the Ashmolean collection at Oxford.

Abigail pointed something out. There are effectively two threads on the same subject, which seems unnecessary. Since this one has more responses I may just delete the other one.

Abigail will you be offended if you answer disappears on the other one?

Abigail Bok (regency_reader) | 781 comments Not at all! I was simply mentioning that I was reading The White Witch by Elizabeth Goudge, published in the 1950s, which is set around the time of the start of the English Civil War though it doesn’t focus on the main events.

Shaun Lewis | 3 comments I have enjoyed two novels on the post-Reformation by J D Davies. They are naval fiction and taught me a little more about the period.

Margaret | 23 comments You could try Jean Plaidy's Stuart Saga. Check out her author page where all the series are listed.

message 10: by Lindsey (new)

Lindsey | 260 comments Restoration and Merivel: A Man of His Time by Rose Tremain. Both are during Charles II's reign. Also with Charles II, Royal Harlot: A Novel of the Countess Castlemaine and King Charles II and The King's Favorite- both provide an entertaining look at his many mistresses.

Abigail Bok (regency_reader) | 781 comments An oldie but a goodie, not directly about the Stuarts but set during the English revolution: The White Witch by Elizabeth Goudge.

Zoe Radley | 735 comments Susanna Kearsley books for example a desperate fortune, Sophias secret etc they are really good yes there are some elements of paranormal sequel but I find it great and the historical setting is good too

David Taylor (davidtaylor) | 10 comments I would like to second Lindsey's choice. Rose Tremain's restoration novels are beautifully written and tell you a lot about the second Stuart age.

Barry Marks | 51 comments I read "Restoration" a decade ago and it's one of those truly unforgettable stories. It's imaginative and brilliant. It takes place during the restoration period, of course, which is now famous for restoration drama, which was the basis for such things as Doris Day movies and this novel itself. It's the only book I've ever read that is a pun. :)

It's a delight. It's fun and silly and at the same time so profoundly real and tragic and vivid. I don't usually read the books of the month but I'm sure ready to read this one again. :)

Barry
