Jason Oliver | 3046 comments So I just learned an interesting fact about Go Set A Watchman.

I loved To Kill A Mockingbird and I liked Go Set A Watchman though I felt the characters were different. It didn't feel like the same people. Go Set A Watchman was released as a sequel to Mockingbird but it is now commonly accepted that Watchman is an original draft of Mockingbird. When the is change was made I'm not sure, but Watchman has flashback to Mockingbird, but really these flashbacks were used to rewrite the story as Mockingbird. Thought I'd share.

Amy | 12921 comments Not often that you get to see an earlier draft and an earlier take on a classic. I haven't read it yet, but I find it interesting that for some it was so disappointing, because mockingbird it so beloved. But looking at it as an earlier inspiration may soothe some of that, because one can see what mockingbird became. I rather think with that perspective I am more likely to enjoy it when I get there. Glad you've joined the group Jason. I'm enjoying your perspective and thinking on things. How lucky are we!

Amy | 12921 comments So far, charming, intelligent, and lovely demeanor. No yet sign of weird and wacky. But of course all of that is welcome too.

Karin | 9218 comments This is a well written piece, and if it's correct, then that explains the disconnect between the two; the character of Atticus, while idealized by Scout as such a young child, would have been somewhat closer to TKAM than to Watchman. When someone rewrites a book etc a character can change; it's not like these characters exist IRL and an author can change who they are.

I liked Go Set a Watchman because I read it on audio, but there were disappointing things in it. I suspect this is why Harper Lee didn't publish it. While there may not have been obvious elder abuse if that check was done with her best interests in mind, I really think that her age and health could have influenced her a great deal.
