This thread is where you can chat about all things PIFM, ask questions and once books have been read, review your selected reads. A complete free for all.

PLEASE NOTE:

PIFM is meant to be FUN and not to be taken seriously. I would appreciate it if all participants just chilled and not get worked up about voting, who votes, who doesn't, etc. Please bear in mind that some will just want to vote, many don't come on everyday and most of us have time constraints. I just want a relaxed approach to it all and for you all to just enjoy the process! I'd really appreciate your courtesy in this matter. Many thanks.

Amber Martingale Added a couple new books to my list for this batch.

message 3: by Perri (new)

Perri | -43 comments I can't decide what to put up yet, hmmm.

message 4: by Perri (new)

Perri | -43 comments Patricia, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, was a magical book for me growing up, just not sure it would be a good for an adult reader. Still, I'll have to watch your votes and reserve the right to change my mind

Dana, also looved Little Women. But every woman needs to read P and P. swoon.

message 5: by Amber (new)

Amber Martingale I disagree, Perri: NO ONE needs to read P&P. It's boring and overrated. Too much description of clothing. Who CARES in this century what they were wearing then?

message 6: by Dana (new)

Dana (dkmckelvey) | 623 comments lol!! I hope to read all of the classics at some point so I can have an opinion... but P&P/Mr. Darcy is definitely one that gets referenced so much so I always feel left out

I second that. I've read it several times in the past and each time I re-read it I was surprised about the slow first third and amazing last third of the book.

Patricia Bergman (marshop) | 1229 comments Reading the classics later in life has such a new meaning. I feel that my neglect in grabbing some of our best ones gives me something to look forward to. For instance, I saw the movies To Kill a Mockingbird and Gone with the Wind but haven't read either book.

There is no excuse for that. I happen to have a degree in English Literature and chose to read Russian, Japanese, and European literature. Oh well!

message 10: by Dana (new)

Dana (dkmckelvey) | 623 comments So interesting, Patricia! Looking back I wish I took more English courses in school. I really hope you read TKAM soon!! It is one of my favorites, I have been reading it since I was young and it never gets old for me.

Also, I recently listened to the audiobook and it is narrated by Sissy Spacek if you are interested in them

Thanks for the tip. I'll check out the audio version.

I don't. Feel left out, I mean.

Oh I read [book:To Kill a Mockingbird
last year and it's gone on my favourites list, loved it. Not overrated. Also One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest

message 14: by Perri (new)

Perri | -43 comments One Flew Over is a mah zing. And the movie did it justice

I loved One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest but found the book far better than the movie.

Isnt's that the usual thing. I think it's rather difficult (or perhaps plain too costly) to transform a great book into an equally great movie :-)

I agree with you. I am a believer in the original book as the best source of excellence.

message 18: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) I've got a tie! Don't forget to vote.

message 19: by Perri (new)

Perri | -43 comments Hi Dana, you might have accidentally skipped over me?

message 20: by Dana (new)

Dana (dkmckelvey) | 623 comments Sorry Perri! I remember picking it in my head though, because I will always choose JK Rowling :)

message 21: by Perri (new)

Perri | -43 comments Ha, thanks Dana, yeah, she's amazing.

message 22: by Vicki Willis (new)

Vicki Willis Well, it looks likeThe Trapped Girl won for me this month. It is the 4th book in the series. I was looking though and I forgot to read the 3rd book, In the Clearing. My plan is to now read the 3rd and the 4th book in the series during December. I will have a mini marathon!
Which is good because I WON the 5th book, Close to Home, in a GoodReads giveaway. So I should get to that soon, so I can review it.
I feel like if you don't read and review the giveaway, you aren't going to win again. A type of book karma.

message 23: by Perri (new)

Perri | -43 comments Congrats on your Give-away win. I don't even enter anymore . I never win. I think the PO box address worries people. I was going to offer you my Mr. Tender's Girl book, but looks like you're going to be busy!

message 24: by Sophie (new)

Sophie | 1126 comments I just won the prequel to Practical Magic, The Rules of Magic, in a Giveaway. It's my first win which is exciting, I'm just slightly annoyed that its not on Kindle format so I have to work out how to read it!
Looks like Stillhouse Lake is going to be my PIFM winner for December. I've really picked up the pace on my reading again now that the cold nights are drawing in. Is there anything better than getting cosy on a chilly night and curling up with a hot drink (or glass of wine) to read a good book. I think not. I've already read two that were on my Dec list (as I knew they weren't going to win anyway).

message 25: by Dana (new)

Dana (dkmckelvey) | 623 comments No Sophie, I don't think there is anything better! I've been reading a lot more lately as well since the cold started.

I went through a phase and won around 7 giveaways, but nothing since? I figured that too Vicki, so I always give it a rating so maybe I'm just in a slump.

message 26: by Perri (new)

Perri | -43 comments Sophie did you read Run? and if so how did you like it? Dark Matter messed with my mind!

message 27: by Amber (new)

Amber Martingale My list is now closed to voting. Any votes that came in over the weekend will be counted but none from today after this post gets shown.

message 28: by Sophie (new)

Sophie | 1126 comments I can't bring myself to go outside in winter unless absolutely necessary...Like, say, a vodka festival this Friday.......

No, I haven't got round to Run yet, it's waiting for me on my Kindle though. I've been reading quite quick things recently, for a couple of challenges I'm involved in. I read Abandon by Blake Crouch and that was odd, but a little bit long-winded for me. Maybe that's what is putting me off starting Run...

message 29: by Perri (new)

Perri | -43 comments Odd is a good way to describe his writing!

message 30: by Amber (new)

Amber Martingale Looks like my winners this month are: Part of Our Lives: A People's History of the American Public Library with 3 votes, God Bless America: Strange and Unusual Religious Beliefs and Practices in the United States with 5 votes and James Beard's American Cookery with 1 vote.

Provided, of course, I can find any of these in the database for my public library. If not, I'll randomly select three books from the list and remove these books permanently from my TBR list.

FINALLY! I feel like I have been voting for that Library book since the beginning of time! I hope it is a good one for you.

message 33: by Amber (new)

Amber Martingale Nah. Just a couple months. LOL.

message 34: by Patricia (new)

Patricia Bergman (marshop) | 1229 comments My winner is Angela's Ashes. I have heard many good things about this one so am looking forward to reading it.

message 35: by Amber (new)

Amber Martingale Part of our Lives has arrived. My copy has about 14 fewer pages than the only hardcover edition listed in the GR database.

message 36: by Amber (new)

Amber Martingale Too academic....*sigh*

Guys do you want to have a January PIFM or would you like a month off? I know I asked last year but I thought I'd ask again and go by your consensus. Being straight after Christmas and New Year wasn't sure if you wanted a break or not.

I would love, but if I'm the only one I'm fine with a pause :-) Thank you!

message 39: by Perri (new)

Perri | -43 comments I think December might have been a better pause month, so I say on to 2018 PIFM :)

Yeah, I did think that Perri a little too late! Sorry 🙏

Perhaps extend December into January and take official January off. Start afresh February. Totally up to you guys. ☺️

Vicki Willis I would like to do January too.

I love this series as well. I don't understand why but in one of the books the author mentioned the series is most popular in Germany and as far as I know the last two or three books were never published in English - and they are originally written in English :-)

message 46: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) That is strange, Agnieszka.

message 47: by Mandy (new)

Mandy (penn_y_lane) | 547 comments I am up for Jan too as it's helping me shift books off my shelves (I need the room) lol
