Here we are in the second section. As we left previously, we find that Mars has become violently sick at Sophie's Thanksgiving dinner, after eating the soup. The paramedics come and take him to the hospital. The police are collecting samples of the food served so far (fortunately, this didn't happen later in the meal, or there would be no food remaining for the non-poisoned people.) Natasha thinks Sophie poisoned him, Humphrey is still pathetically pining for Sophie, and surprisingly, the rest of the guests continue on with the dinner!

I'm wondering whether this was an attempt to poison Sophie, and it backfired on Mars?

And finally, the weapon that killed Simon is found.

PugMom (nicoleg76) | 2014 comments Humphrey is a bit annoying. Sophie seems to have a lot of patience with him and Natasha. I don't think I'd be so nice!

Nicole (nicolevickers) | 1814 comments I've never met a mortician, but I don't think I'd want one hanging around my house, and the fact that he thinks that Sophie reciprocates his feelings is hilarious. Also, I think that Sophie has been extremely kind in inviting all of these extra people to her Thanksgiving meal and I don't like her sister's fiance. He gives me the creeps.

Me either. Especially with regard to Natasha's comments as Sophie was preparing dinner.

Allison | 905 comments Sophie gets my vote for all around nice person. I would probably not be so nice at having all the extra people descend upon my Thanksgiving table. Especially a love-struck mortician and the sisters fiance. They are both really creepy. Compared to those two, I don't mind the Ghost of Aunt Faye living in the house.

LOL And the band kept on playing. Not sure I'd have much of an appetite after Mars' got sick not to mention the earlier murders. What a nightmare!!

I love the way Faye's picture tilts whenever Natasha's around or her name comes up. :-)

Something seems up with Hannah's beau but is his behavior a blue or red herring that the author's setting up for us??

Hannah's beau is a bit different, but not as much as Humphrey. I am suspicious of Clyde now, Simon's chauffeur. How is it he is the only person to like Simon?

I'm trying to fit together four things which are problematic: The PI's murder, Simon's murder, the attempt on Mars (which may have been directed to someone else) and the sabotage of the dressing competition.

Mmm? Layers of intrigue, Pghfan. I'm not liking Humphrey as perp now that it's revealed how he's at dinner in first place. Don't know much re: the chauffeur but eliminating all other weak suspects, driver will probably end up being It. You know how those personal servants can be. lol (Thinking of Syd from Father Brown and a few others).

PugMom (nicoleg76) | 2014 comments Syd from Father Brown cracks me up!

I've watched some of the older Father Brown's but not up to date on the new ones. I understand from a Facebook group that Syd has left the show!

Who is everyone's guess at a perp so far?

Learning more about the Colonel. Now he's starting to sound like a possibility.

Now, are we talking about the physical books or the tv show?

I am curious about the Colonel as well. I'm not sure where you all are in this middle section, but in it we do find a motive for the Colonel.

Let me know where you all are, so I can judge when to start the final section. (I'm not quite there yet myself!)

Pg. 170 Seems the author is taking turns shining light on all characters as possible suspects.
