Susie Like everyone else I read A Gentleman in Moscow (was it last year?) and I was ultimately a little bit disappointed. I remained hesitant but decided to throw my hat in the ring. This was the last of my High Note books and a highlight for me. What a wonderful book. It did take me a while to fall in love with, but once I had sunk my teeth in I found it to be a complete joy to read. Katey was a fabulous, strong, independant protagonist in an era where it was not common to be so, and the rest of the characters were well drawn and endearing. The story was engaging, insightful and tender, and I appreciated the sentiment. The prose was beautiful. I was particularly impressed that Towles as a male writer was able to write a female protaganist so well. I am glad to have read it and will be deliving in to Towles' future offerings.

I'm just wondering if you noticed the way he did dialog. Not sure if this is the same for all editions, but he didn't use quotation marks and often didn't really identify the speakers as they changed. It took me a bit to get used to this style.

Susie I did notice that. It is a style that I seem to be drawn to. Many of my favourite novelists write in a similar fashion.

Joi (missjoious) | 3970 comments I think this is going to be my last high note also. Two 5 star reviews definitely puts it up there on the TBR.

I haven't read A Gentleman in Moscow but it sounds like this book is the place to start for the author.

Jennifer Pope (jenjunum) | 902 comments I preferred this over Gentleman too. I really, really liked this one.

Anita Pomerantz | 9287 comments I also preferred Rules to Gentleman, but that being said, still liked Gentleman a lot more than many books!
