Thanks to Cluckingbell for the choice of shelf for December. Her choice is Satire. I love this choice since December is such a hectic month...I know I could use a little satire to make me smile.

Hope there is something on the list that appeals to you!

Marina (sonnenbarke) | 1513 comments I think I might read something by Jonathan Swift. I loved Gulliver's Travels (5 stars), but I don't think I've ever read anything else by him. I might go for A Modest Proposal or A Tale of a Tub. Or maybe re-read The Nose by Nikolai Gogol. Or else The Satyricon by Petronius. I'll have to see how I can use these books for other challenges.

Rosemary | 948 comments I have plenty of choice on my TBR:

The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie by Muriel Spark - most likely
Cat's Cradle by Kurt Vonnegut
Guards! Guards! and The Amazing Maurice and His Educated Rodents by Terry Pratchett
Tourist Season by Carl Hiaasen
Miss Lonelyhearts / The Day of the Locust by Nathanael West
The Liar by Stephen Fry
The Joke by Milan Kundera

I'll definitely plan to read the Muriel Spark (some of you will know why!), and possibly one or two more.

Two of the books which I need to read for the Lost challenge are on the Satire shelf:-

The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood and
Lord of the Flies by William Golding

Fingers crossed!

I think I might try The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn as it is on a couple of other plans for me.

message 6: by CluckingBell (new)

CluckingBell | 327 comments I'm thinking A Modest Proposal, since it's so often alluded to in Britcoms and will also fit in to an early Bookopoly move. I've added a lot of books from that shelf to Mount TBR, though.

Christina (cmb1987) | 161 comments I think I am going to read A Dirty Job for this month. I have been curious about this one a while.

I read many books by Christopher Moore and decided I don't like the author, but this is the only one that had me laugh out loud! I loved it!

Kristina Simon (kristinasimon) | 801 comments Satire is not my favorite, but I keep trying! I think I'll try to finally get through A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court since it's on several other of my challenge lists. It's on Serial Reader, too, so that will help. I love that app!

Klela I think I'll read A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess or The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared by Jonas Jonasson...or both!

This is great!

Karin I usually do NOT like satire, but will see what I can do.

D.G. | 1370 comments The shelving here is weirder than most. I don't consider any of Jane Austen's books satire but they are all in this shelf!

ETA: Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen is probably a satire but I don't consider P&P to be one...

message 14: by D.G. (last edited Nov 25, 2017 01:26PM) (new)

D.G. | 1370 comments I think I'll read Redshirts by John Scalzi Miss Lonelyhearts & The Day of the Locust by Nathanael West Willful Child by Steven Erikson . I've had them all on my TBR a while...

Jane Austen wrote social satire. I always find her books very slyly humorous.

message 16: by D.G. (new)

D.G. | 1370 comments Yes, all her books are humorous (some more than others) but humor is not satire...

Agree!

Joyce (eternity21) | 732 comments I have quite a few books on deck for this shelf
probably go for one of these
The Stupidest Angel: A Heartwarming Tale of Christmas Terror
Shades of Grey
Guards! Guards!

My first reaction was that I don't much care for satire, but then I noticed that all the Jasper Fforde books seem to be on the shelf, so there's lots to choose from. I'll start with one of these ...

Orlando
The Heart Goes Last
Player Piano
The Circle

... but I'm still browsing the shelf, too.

message 21: by CluckingBell (new)

CluckingBell | 327 comments I read A Modest Proposal, which turned out to be much (much, much) shorter than I thought, so I'm going to see if I can squeeze Candide in before Christmas, too. It's short, but hopefully not any shorter than I think.

Karin Did this in the wrong place

Evelina for sure, perhaps more.

Lyn XD (8billionpeoplexd) | 4 comments Hello everyone! I'm Lyn, by the way. I just introduced myself to the introduce page? haha. But I'm new to goodreads and to this group. And I find it very interesting that you have such a unique agenda going on here. I feel like I'm going to be reading a lot more books that I probably wouldn't have read in my life because of joining here. That is incredibly exciting.

For one, I don't think I even ventured into Satire before. And I've been reading through all the book suggestions and I think I'll read Gulliver's Travels like @Marina because I'm more familiar with this one.

Thank you very much for such an awesome idea. I look forward to meeting you all guys! :)

Welcome, Lyn.

message 25: by Karin (new)

Karin It turns out that another book I'm reading has been shelved satire 14 times, so I'm going to review that one for satire as well. White Teeth
