Kelly_Hunsaker_reads ... | 194 comments Rosemarie how many languages do you read?

message 85: by Rosemarie (new)

Rosemarie | 1567 comments The languages without a dictionary beside me are English, French and German.
I can read Italian and Dutch with occasional use of a dictionary. Spanish and Portuguese require more frequent use of a dictionary.
I was a qualified French teacher and took four years of Latin in high school, which really helps with Italian and the other Romance languages. German is my first language and Dutch is a variation of Low German.
I love the way languages change and develop as they move from one country to the next, and even from one region to another in the same country.
Plus, I really love to travel to Europe.

That is an excellent goal and impressive progress. I also want to concentrate more on books I already own.

Darren (dazburns) | 2148 comments MK - you're no slouch yourself with 30,000 pages last year, but even if we add my 44,000 we still fall short of Rosemarie's 89,000!!!

at turn of year I had 182 un-read physical books in my house
this madness must end!
my main goal is to vastly reduce this during 2019 (grits_teeth_smiley)

message 93: by Rosemarie (new)

Rosemarie | 1567 comments Darren, I am afraid to count how many unread books I have. I live in Toronto and there are four huge used book sales at four of the University of Toronto colleges in September and October. I donate books for the sales each year but I never seem to get ahead. But I never run out of reading matter.

Kelly_Hunsaker_reads ... | 194 comments Rosemarie, do you watch television? How many hours per day do you read? I read a lot too. But I read many hours a day everyday.

message 97: by Rosemarie (new)

Rosemarie | 1567 comments I don't know how many hours I read. It depends on my activities. I do read more when the weather is miserable, and it has certainly been that since the end of January.
I stopped watching tv a few years ago, since I was generally bored by what I was watching.
My husband and I enjoy going to plays at our local university and really love classical music concerts. We also have memberships to the Royal Ontario Museum and the Art Gallery of Ontario.
I take a book with me just about everywhere I go if I know I will have to spend time waiting.
Plus--I really love to read!

Kelly_Hunsaker_reads ... | 194 comments TV is definitely a time suck. I don't watch much myself anymore either.

message 99: by Rosemarie (new)

Rosemarie | 1567 comments I watched a lot more tv when my daughters were living at home. My younger daughter moved out in 2009, and after that I gradually watched less and less tv, until I finally stopped about 3 years ago, after taking a long hard look at my bookshelves.
Of course, I still buy new books and go to the library, but I am making headway.
