For thirty-five girls, the Selection is the chance of a lifetime. The opportunity to escape the life laid out for them since birth. To be swept up in a world of glittering gowns and priceless jewels. To live in a palace and compete for the heart of gorgeous Prince Maxon.

But for America Singer, being Selected is a nightmare. It means turning her back on her secret love with Aspen, who is a caste below her. Leaving her home to enter a fierce competition for a crown she doesn't want. Living in a palace that is constantly threatened by violent rebel attacks.

Then America meets Prince Maxon. Gradually, she starts to question all the plans she's made for herself—and realizes that the life she's always dreamed of may not compare to a future she never imagined.

Melissa Ramirez (melissaramirez) | 241 comments I read this book maybe last year. It was pretty good, but I'm not sure if it would hold up to a re-read.

I know it's off topic, but I really loved the Red Queen series by Victoria Aveyard. Somehow, the Selection reminds me of it.

Alison (a1ison74) | 418 comments I read this a year or two ago as well and while it's quite an easy and addictive read I'm afraid I found it frustrating.

I was not a fan of America at all. I don't think I've ever come across a character who moans as much or is so indecisive. I won't say too much as I've read all five books and I'm scared I'll give away something from a later book but it's definitely not a favourite.

If anyone wants a giggle go to YouTube and search for The Selection Dolls. Someone has used barbies to act out the full series. Honestly I think it's better than the books.
