As I have mentioned, the St. Louis Public Library will no longer be the patron for our book club come January. I am exploring opportunities to continue the club. Let me know your opinions.

As long as we can still meet in person, the Central West End seems like the place to do it. I'm sure the library could accommodate us, but we can try different venues as well. I would like someplace I could access and demonstrate technology, though I don't need to be reliant on the laptop. Let me know if you have any suggestions.

Is 7 PM on the second Wednesday of the month still good for everybody? This represents an ideal time to revisit that meeting time, if there are any conflicts.

My proposed books for the next 3 months:
Bad Feminist by Roxane Gay
Welcome to Night Vale by Joseph Fink and Jeffrey Cranor
Around the World in 80 Days by Jules Verne

Lucy (lucy47) | 149 comments There's always Breadco, tho' I don't know if they'd guarantee us a table every mo. I've seen ladies quilting/knitting together at large tables in my Breadco, unmolested. And of course, your laptop would fit right in. Any chance Left Bank would host us, if we weren't buying the bks there? You resident CWE'ers must know some friendly little coffeehouse that would welcome us, or how about on South Grand somewhere?
Re proposed bks for next 3 mos, Jules Verne???

Yes, Jules Verne. We haven't yet considered this grandfather of Steampunk and Science Fiction, and I have a fun plan in mind for that title. Though, I don't have to be strictly beholden to library advertisement policies anymore, so there may be a bit more leeway in what books go where.

We could even put up alternate books, in case people just can't do the month's "main" book. That's something I've seen employed in book clubs to reasonable success.

The Vino Gallery would likely be amenable if we buy a couple bottles of wine. They might even let us BYO snacks. They also have a projector and WiFi and tech set up.

Dressels’ and Llywelyn’s also are probably quiet and chill enough. Not sure about WiFi though. Both have upstairs rooms as well. And patios in the summer!

Readridinghood | 62 comments I don’t have any ideas. But am always open to a new experience! Happy Holliday’s everyone! See you next month!

Cheryl Hammond | 27 comments It's always hard to find a location where you can project from your laptop to a screen. In fact, it's hard to find any location that can accommodate the number of people in our book club.

It's a problem even for small groups of 6 or 7 trying to find a place such as BreadCo with a table big enough and also where the music is not so loud that you can still hear each other. The background music is one of the biggest problems.

Churches are the best locations if someone is a member of a church that will let us use one of their meeting rooms. If someone has an office conference room or lives in an apartment building with a meeting room, those are great. Of course, the library is the best location.

I belong to a Toastmasters Club that meets in a church and we have been trying to find a better meeting place, with no luck.

Lucy (lucy47) | 149 comments Ok, what's the plan for 12/16? Are we meeting at the Lib, and going out somewhere (Vino, to check it out?) to discuss "Hidden...", then have a party? Or everyone bring something and we'll discuss & munch potluck at the Lib? Or?? Need everyone to chime in here!

message 8: by Kimberley (new)

Kimberley Parks | 19 comments I think we should meet at the library on 12/16 for a celebratory party/book discussion and make decisions then about where and when for Jan.-Feb. etc. That would give more time to get the word out to everyone about changes before next meeting.

Cheryl Hammond | 27 comments I thought Ken had asked us all to bring an item for refreshments.

Correct—library potluck for 12/16. We discuss the book and THE FUTURE.

Lucy (lucy47) | 149 comments Oops, my goof -- it's the 13th, not the 16th, unless we decided to do Sat instead of Wednesday?? Re potluck, I''m really only good at desserts, so ok if that's my contribution?

Anne | 135 comments Mod
Ha. I just had the same thought. This is for Wednesday, 12/13. Desserts are always welcome.

We are definitely meeting on the 13th. I would like it if everybody could bring a little snack to share and celebrate our club. I'm sending out some email instructions in a few minutes here. If you know what you want to bring, go ahead and list it. So far we have:

Lucy: Desserts
Me: ?

I found this good list—several of which we’ve read. Good picks for 2018 and beyond!
