colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments Yeah. I'm so not ready for this Holiday Season nonsense.

I'm in the last stretches of The Truth, which brings me almost on track for my Discworld-a-thon, and I should definitely be able to get to Hogfather around the holidays.

I'm also very, very, very slowly making my way through The Three Musketeers. (Like, I've read 13% in a month slow...)

I'm debating about whether to start a Harry Potter reread, or power through Musketeers instead.

I say give yourself the rest of the year to finish The Three Musketeers and then make Harry Potter part of the fun start to your new year.

As for me:

I started American Gods yesterday. I'm guessing it'll take me about a week and a half to complete.

I then hope to read My True Love Gave To Me: Twelve Holiday Stories and Holiday Flirts! 5 Romantic Short Stories

Jackie (thenightowl) I finished Dealing with Dragons last night, which was a group read here. It was cute and enjoyable. Not sure if I will continue with the series though. I thought it worked well as a standalone.

I ordered a few books from the library that I'm waiting to come in- The Little Book of Hygge: The Danish Way to Live Well, The Rose & the Dagger and Heidi (for book club). In the meantime, I may just take a break to Netflix and chill a bit. I have a few shows/movies to catch up on.

message 6: by Nyssa (new)

Nyssa | 2023 comments I still have a 1945 copy of Heidi that was given to me as a child some 35 years ago!

Wow! Is it in good condition?

message 8: by Nyssa (new)

Nyssa | 2023 comments Somewhat fair condition. I don't know if I ever had the jacket cover for it, and so the edges of the hardcover are a bit frayed. But the binding is still stable and secure, with no missing or torn pages.

I think that one is the best of the series. It was my favorite - and I have to say one of the books kinda was terrible. O_O

I know how to cover paperbacks, and jacket covers, but not jacketless hardcovers. And the media specialist I worked with retired the year before last.

Oh!! Speaking of media specialist...I may have the opportunity to be the full-time sub at my friends' school, for their media specialist who will be on maternity leave. I'm just waiting for the paperwork to go through.

These look interesting - adding the first books in the series to my TBR shelf!

The last day of last month I read Heads Will Roll, which was an interesting tale of a unicorn and a human fighting team in a modern setting. This month, so far, I've only read Andrew Barton's short story, 'Alouette, gentille alouette', in Analog Science Fiction and Fact July/August 2017.

LOL Fair point! I had hoped to read another story or two by now as it's the weekend.

Thanks Nyssa! There's a couple of short story ebooks I want to read this weekend before moving onto a novel. The short stories are a way to clear my mind a bit after finishing Perdido Street Station last month.

Yep, we all need a good palette cleanser sometimes, especially if we're suffering from a book-hangover.

I usually read short stories after a slump (which happens way too often to be honest), as a filler if I'm waiting between books for a reason, or like now towards the end of the year when I don't want to commit to anything new yet.

I also need to close the gap on my 2017 reading challenge! Those short story ebooks can come in handy for doing that!

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments I finished up a Winterveil trilogy reread, and have now decided to focus on 3 Musketeers, at least for a week, at which time I'll switch over to Hogfather, assuming I'm not done with Musketeers yet... which I might not be because it's fucking long and kind of stupid.

message 25: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thenightowl) I finished two books this weekend- The Marriage of Opposites, which I really enjoyed. It's considered historical fiction since it follows the story of Camille Pissarro's mother. He was considered "the Father of Impressionism". The story includes some folklore and magic realism though, which is typical of Hoffman's writing.

The 2nd book is The Little Book of Hygge: The Danish Way to Live Well. A lot of mention candles and woolen socks in this little book.

I've started in on The Rose & the Dagger. My memory must be going or the 1st book wasn't as impressive as I thought because I ended up having to go back to remember some details.

Still reading...
Had planned to put in a few good hours today, but then life laughed at me for daring to make plans.

On the plus side, my vision may be improving, and I don't have any signs of glaucoma which took my granddaddy's sight and is slowly taking my dad's even though they caught it relatively early.

message 27: by Dawn, Dawnerys, Mother of Modding (new)

Dawn (breakofdawn) | 860 comments I'm still reading Words of Radiance. I love doing the re-read, because I forgot a lot, but I do feel like books I want to read are piling up and I don't have enough time to get to them all. It sucks!

message 28: by Chris , cookie guilt (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2450 comments Yes, that's how I get when I do a long re-read.

I'm moving slowly through Oathbringer.

message 30: by Michelle (new)

Michelle Kobus (rainbowsunset) | 123 comments So far this month, I've finished Orange: The Complete Collection, Vol. 1 (5 stars) and Black Flowers, White Lies (1 star), and I've dabbled with Orange: The Complete Collection, Vol. 2, The Dead House, Thunder and Shadow, Winter's Heart and La Belle Sauvage. I'm unsure if I will finish any of these, even though I like most of them, because I'm too on edge to read very much, lately.

How did I miss you were having vision issues? I'm so sorry! And I'm so glad its getting better!!!!

My grandma has mostly lost her vision at this point. She's super sad about losing the ability to read - but she is 92. I'm trying to get her to use the accessibility features on the Kindle Fire I got her but she's not used to it so...

It's good to hear that you don't have glaucoma, Nyssa! My reading vision has also deteriorated. I don't have bifocals (yet) but I can only read well with my glasses perched lower down my nose. Otherwise, I have to take them off so that I can read the text much more closely. Fun isn't it?

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments I'd like to finish the Darker Shades of Magic series in 2018. Anyone interested in a Buddy Read for the last 2 of the trilogy?

A Gathering of Shadows
A Conjuring of Light

Greg | 201 comments I finished yesterday a collection of short MG horror stories called Mystery Underground: States of Emergency. It was a fun read - I would have loved this book as a tween!
