Awesome! I'm still a bit confused by it, especially the 'read a book but don't apply it' part

message 213: by Kelly (new)

Kelly (ladykatala) | 5020 comments Basically, you'll get a big list of tasks to do for your team.
You guys read as super fast as you can to meet those tasks.
If you read a book that works for one you can apply it right away. Once you set a read book to a task then it's locked in and sabotages won't affect it.
If you choose to hold off to potentially have more options of where to put things based on what people read, you run the risk of someone sabotaging you and making it so you can't apply certain books you may have read.

Essentially, as long as you log the book to a task then it's safe from sabotages. If you haven't logged it yet, even if it's been read and finished, a sabotage will affect it.

Does that help?

Hey!
Just to be clear. Whichever book we apply to a task, the whole team has to read it right?

Nope.

message 218: by Tati (new)

Tati | 1350 comments From what I understand, the team will receive a list of tasks, and it's one reader per task, so no, the whole team won't have to read the same book in order to complete one task.

message 219: by Sonia (new)

Sonia (darktalynn) | 11599 comments Each task is done by a member only. So, for example if the mods were a team and we had 10 tasks like:

Read a book where a character's first name starts with the letter A
Read a book where a character's first name starts with the letter B
Read a book where a character's first name starts with the letter C
Read a book where a character's first name starts with the letter D
Read a book where a character's first name starts with the letter E
Read a book where a character's first name starts with the letter F
Read a book where a character's first name starts with the letter G
Read a book where a character's first name starts with the letter H
Read a book where a character's first name starts with the letter I
Read a book where a character's first name starts with the letter J

We could have Shannon doing task 1, Kelly 2, Karen 3, etc...

Eni | 2349 comments Ora wrote: "If we have more tasks than members in our group, a member can read multiple books?"

If it's anything like previous games then I would assume so. Specially because in the rules the mods claim there will be more tasks than a team can do in a week xD My advice however is not to have members call dibs on multiple tasks. But that is up to each team's strategy I guess

To clarify -- If a team member posts a Completion Post but the Captain or Co-Captain hasn't logged it on the spreadsheet or log in thread, whatever is used, then it can be sabotaged, right?
So Captains have to be vigilant to keep team logs updated, if that's the strategy the team decides on.

Alysa H. | 3842 comments Sonia wrote: "As I said 2 posts ago, yes."

In your other answer, because of the cuts, I can't tell if you were answering the "as long as you log the book to a task then it's safe from sabotages" part, or the "It has to be logged by a Captain/Co-Captain part" of the original posters' questions...

So, you're saying yes to both of these points?

message 238: by Sonia (new)

Sonia (darktalynn) | 11599 comments Okay, now I get it, sorry... RL is getting in the way and I am a bit stressed out today.

So, completion posts is one thing, is when a member reads a book that can be applied to a task, right?

Logging the book into the task is different, it means it gets locked down and no more moving is allowed. Those are safe.

If you have a book marked as read, but not submitted into Kelly's magic stuff, then it can be sabotaged.

So yeah. Is a matter of strategy, and meanness.

Because when bidding and having to apply the sabotage, the team has access to books unused... so it can do a lot of harm

Alysa H. | 3842 comments Sonia wrote: "Okay, now I get it, sorry... RL is getting in the way and I am a bit stressed out today."

No worries, me too. Last day of work before a vacation and all :)

I think I get it now, esp vis-a-vis why it may or may not be a good idea for a Captain not to log a book immediately after it's been read.

Like for example, if there are two simultaneous easy tasks like "Read a book starting with an A" and "Read a book by an author whose last name starts with an A", and someone reads a book that could fulfill either one of those requirements, but the Captain does not log it. Then: if another team sabotages us by not allowing us to use one of those requirements (e.g. A title), we could potentially still log that book for the other (e.g., A author).

And it will be up to the Captain/Co-Captain to do the logging and decide when to log (with input from their team members, in theory).

Do I have that all right?

Sorry if I'm annoying Mods by asking repetitive questions. I just tend to be a very strict rule-following type of person, provided I fully grasp the rules, and if/when/how they can be applied. Maybe next year, time permitting, I should just sign up to be a Captain. ;D

message 247: by Vicky (last edited Dec 28, 2017 08:07PM) (new)

Vicky (librovert) | 3137 comments I'm just re-reading through the rules and have a few clarification questions.

1) About this Challenge says:

🔪 Only books read during the specified challenge can be used (“read date” is what counts, not the day you start.) Books cannot be “banked” from previous weeks to used later.

My interpretation: The challenge has four two week rounds, so books have to be used during the round they are read in. If we start a book on Friday of Round 1 and finish it on Tuesday of Round 2, the book applies for Round 2. Is that correct?

2) Sabotage bidding will always last for 12 hours and no new sabatoges will take place before that time is up?

3) Are our task lists going to be huge? Or will be able to repeat tasks in a given round?

It depends.

For example: you read a book Animal Farm.
It could apply to task for either "Book title starts with A", "Authors first name starts with G" or "Book has 120-130 pages" (yes I know the min is 160, just assume it's lower for sake of example)

Before you can apply it, someone sabotages you with "Cannot use books with titles starting with A".

There's no way you can use the book now.

However, if someone sabotaged you with "All books now have 10 less pages", you could apply to the first 2 tasks but not the third one for pages.

Does that help?

1) You can't start a book before the challenge starts. If you start a book in round 1, you can finish it in round 2 and use it. If you finish a book in round 1 you need to use it in round 1 or lose it. Yes, this means if you can't apply it for some reason it will go to waste. We're mean.

2) There may be multiple sabotages being bid on at a time. Not always but there could be. Each will have it's own 12 hour timer. But you'd have at least 12 hours to see a sabotage up on the bidding block before there's a chance that it's applied to your team.

3) The task lists will be big. We're looking at about 120 tasks for a 2 week period. If people start running out, we'll increase them for future rounds. You cannot repeat tasks.

message 250: by Alison (new)

Alison (a1ison74) | 2826 comments This just sounds better and better. I'm curious about the bidding for sabotages. Will this be done in a thread or in a spreadsheet? Will we see what other teams are bidding for and how much their bid is?
