Jim | 21810 comments I was trying to download a free ebook from Amazon.

My kindle isn't registered with them, I don't use the kindle wifi. (Because the books I have on my kindle I want to keep on my kindle and not have them in the cloud where Amazon can decide to do things to them)

All I want to do is download the file onto my desktop computer and then I'll transfer it to the kindle down the wire.
Yet as far as I can make out I cannot do this, do I have to have a kindle app on the computer?

Jim | 21810 comments I've technically bought a book. Amazon have sent me the email saying Thank you for shopping with us. This content will be delivered wirelessly to your device and will be stored in Your Kindle Library.

Yet it doesn't appear on the Manage Your Content and Devices page at all.

Michael Cargill (michaelcargill) | 2992 comments If your Kindle isn't registered with them, that's probably why. The file you download is locked to the Kindle you choose to download it for.

Jim | 21810 comments because the kindle was given to me by a friend second hand there's no way I'm going to try and register that one with them.
Why on earth can you now just download a file, like with pretty well every other organisation I've ever dealt wit?

So do I have to put a kindle app on the computer?
