Saul the Heir of Isauldur (krinnok) | 209 comments LET'S GET READY TO RUMBLLLLLEEEEEE!!!!!

So, Sword and Sorcery characters are famous for being almost like literary superheroes. Recently, I've been reading some sword & sorcery, and then I thought about two things: who would win in a fight and which one is better as a book/story/reading material?

The first showdown is......

Conan the Cimmerian vs. Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser!!!!!
Who would win in a fight?
Which stories are better?

Goooo!!!

I’ve yet to read either...

Andrew | 653 comments Never read Conan, and never heard of Fafhrd (although the poor guy clearly needs to buy a vowel).

But I like the idea! Reminds me of this: http://www.unboundworlds.com/cage-mat...

Saul the Heir of Isauldur (krinnok) | 209 comments Fafhrd does indeed need a vowel. It's pronounced "Faf-erd." The author himself drew attention to it and in-universe specified how to pronounce it.

Zaara | 4273 comments Excellent idea @Saul...its just...if I may suggest...like Marge hinted...
but she was subtle and I'm just being more obvious...
Choose pairs from series that a lot of ppl will have read and this thread will pop like corn....
I've heard of Fafhrd of course and Conan, but on;y cuz I used to chat with this dude..Ben...he runs a site/blog whatever...called Best Fantasy Books.com....
The Fafhrd/Cimmerian faceoff is from the eighties and nineties, no?
Too new to be counted as classics that everyone "must read"... yet and too oldschool for anyone to remember much abt them except hardcore 'across the genre' readers like you.
Now if you asked who'd win if Ghost and NightEyes faced off....in a tangle of flying fur and teeth....
I mean of course it would be NightEyes....everyone knows he's my favourite wolf I mean...speaking unbiasedly...one is a shapeshifting manwolf...the other one is not even properly coloured...and not even a proper wolf come to think of it ;-) kidding...love Ghost too but still NIGHTEYES...
But all the Ghost fans would turn up and post, see?

Margret | 3168 comments Mod
Um, no way Nighteyes would win. Ghost is a big motherfucker sent to destroy those wights

message 7: by Anni (new)

Anni | 5066 comments Wait, are we talking about Robin Hobb's Nighteyes? I am confused, because he is no shapeshifter...

If so I agree with Zaara, Nighteyes is the best! Ghost might be stronger but not as clever as Nighteyes...

message 8: by Zaara (new)

Zaara | 4273 comments @Anni....yeah Robin Hobb ok its been ages since I read those books but didnt (view spoiler)
Yeah my bad. Shapeshifter was the wrong word.

@Margret...yeah Ghost he a big motha DIREWOLF. Doesn't count as a regulat wolf. NightEyes is my fave wolf wolf.

That's fair enough :P

I actually came across a more recent showdown. I guess these characters count as sword and sorcery:

Either member of Ryria vs Falcio of the The Greatcoats

message 10: by Zaara (new)

Zaara | 4273 comments Hadrian FOREVAAAAAR. I think Royce runs more to stealth and brainwork. I've only read one Riyria book.
And to be fair, I haven't yet read Falcio.
Sooooooo...prolly not the best person to be answering.
The ones you want to inviegle [email protected] Laura and Mayim...
And Sarah.
And Seàn. Seàn would rock this game. And Liam and Ahdam. And who was that dude who kept talking abt Discworld? And the other one who was all abt Shannara.
Deffo get all the boys. You can't host a literary fencing championship without them...

Huan, the Hound of Valinor, will kick both Nighteyes and Ghost's furry arses.

This one is hard to compete with.

message 14: by Andrew (new)

Andrew | 653 comments So here are some showdowns that I totally want to see--

Battle of the Bandits: Gentleman Bastards vs. Riyria
Battle of the Royal Bastards: Fitzchivalry Farseer vs. Jon Snow
Battle of Wits: Sand dan Glokta vs. Tyrian Lannister
Battle of Reticent BAMFs: Logen Ninefingers vs. Perrin Aybara

Dassem Ultor seems like the logical pick here. Think Karsa and Caladan might be able to give him a run for his money. Then there is always Quick Ben.

Just a Malazan tournament would be fun.

They sort of did this. Hood and Gothos won.

It’s true, you cannot beat Anomander’s silken locks.

Also, I agree with you about Nighteyes vs. Ghost, Margret. You can't compete with the direwolf.

Saul the Heir of Isauldur (krinnok) | 209 comments How about Bran Stark vs Perrin Aybrara?

Nice thanks. Think it was unbound worlds that did a tournament like this too. They had guest authors write the battles up. I’ll see if I can find the link. Think Tom Bombadil won theirs.

Zaara | 4273 comments @Bill, nice! Funny nobody else mentioned them yet...
The Unbound Worlds cage matches are fun, write-ups n all...tho' they tend to vary in "interstingness" year on year...
+ accidental spoilaaaaahs...

@Chris....mwha!
