MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 5312 comments I have a serious case of the slumps! It's been dragging on and on and on.

Due to that, I've not even had interest in books I've been waiting for - making me sadder.

In an attempt to get my reading mojo back, I'd love to hear about your best 2017 reads! It doesn't have to be a new release, just the best book(s) YOU read in 2017 - and why.

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 5312 comments As my contribution:

Behind the Throne - This was fast paced, non-stop action. LOVE. Plus it has a matriarchy. Plus the heroine is a gunrunner who also is a princess and becomes an empress.

LOVE.

The Scalzi books: I think I read 3 of them this year and enjoyed them all. The favorites were Old Man's War and The Collapsing Empire.

Nyssa | 2023 comments Sadly, I didn't read much outside of school this year, but I was thrilled I was introduced to The Others. The only reason why I didn't read the 5th book, Etched in Bone, is the cost. I can not justify $14 for a non-omnibus e-book. The sixth novel is due out sometime next year so, I may revisit the series in a couple of years.

I'm still seriously contemplating a 10th Anniversary Good Reads Choice Award Challenge next year.
Since there were different categories the first two or three years, I want to see which categories have been constant since the beginning. Those will make up the master list.

Have you tried any more books in the Old Man's War series? Maybe they can help with your slump!

I thought I was in a slump... Now I think my reading habits have just changed. I read a lot more before I had Rowan, now I sleep immediately when I try to read in bed. I just don't have time to make my way through books like I used to!

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2450 comments Also from Scalzi that you might like: Redshirts & Fuzzy Nation.

I need to work on the Old Man's War books too. I've only read the first two.

Jay (okay_jay) | 135 comments As for why: Railroad was an interesting take on slavery and race relations, imagining the underground railroad was literal, and brilliantly written; Soldier was one of the best myth-based fantasies I've read; Whip Hand was a great mystery/thriller; 700 made me cry and laugh; Menagerie and Carnivorous were great story collections, vastly different but both intelligent and deconstructionist.
