Choi Minseo is famous for his revolutionary work in neurosurgery, and for never ever turning down a patient no matter how risky the operation. Among his fellow doctors, Minseo is also known as the cool android kid who takes the crappy shifts and long operations so his human co-workers can get some rest.

android & neurosurgeonMinseo is one of the oldest androids currently in operation — and he can testify that he's gone through a fair few upgrades to get him to this point. It's because of his work that he gets these upgrades: other androids from way back when they first became a thing tend to be much more glitchy and prone to malfunction, because they don't work on things that require absolute precision.

It's fairly common knowledge that Kunwoo hates androids. He hates the idea that a few computers and a bunch of code is enough to put him out of a job. At the point where robots can feel emotion, you have a problem — because the whole point of them, in the beginning, was that they could do jobs nobody else wanted to do. Things that were dangerous or boring. Not infiltrate the entertainment industry.
Kunwoo spends most of his spare time (not that he has much, being a uni student) researching the legal system and trying to find an effective solution to the android problem. The things have emotion, so they can't be gotten rid of altogether, but if the government would just pass a law that required human candidates for jobs to be preferenced over androids it would lower unemployment rates significantly.
Androids don't have families to provide for. They don't need the same things as humans — a roof over their head and an electricity source is more than adequate. Humans need so much more, and without jobs, how are they supposed to get those things? Coming from a family of seven, Kunwoo knows what it's like to have not enough — and both his parents worked full-time. The thing about androids is that they take the jobs that used to be things only humans could do. And he might not be studying economy, but Kunwoo's fairly sure that if there's no money circulation then the economy is pretty much dead. You need human workers for an economy.
Minseo is soft. Despite his appearance frightening kids, they usually grow to love him within a day or so. He's the nice nurse who always brings kids presents from their families (or, if their family doesn't give them anything, from himself). He's the one who'll gently reprimand them for not taking their medicine, then reward them with lollipops when they do.
When Minseo first decided that he didn't want to be a doctor, he was told that he would be a failure. “ It's a waste of talent, ” his parents said. And maybe for the first few years he did question whether nursing was the right choice, but now, with a partner who supports him and a bunch of kids waiting each day at the hospital for ‘ their favourite nurse ’, he knows that whatever his parents might think, it's not a waste of talent. Because he enjoys what he does, and he helps people.
For a internationally-famous fashion designer, Seungyoon has a lot of insecurities. He refuses to believe that his work is actually any good, gets panic attacks when he thinks something won't be ready on time (even though he sets the deadlines so there's nobody to yell at him except himself), and gets anxious to the point of stuttering every time he has to present his designs to anyone.

Even though he's the owner of his label and probably too busy to justify it, Seungyoon often models his own clothes. He claims that it's because he knows how each thing is supposed to be worn, and what goes best with what, but really it's probably just because he loves the satisfaction of knowing that he's wearing something that he designed (and, occasionally, made) with his own two hands.
There have been rumours that he's a time-traveler. They're wrong — he doesn't get involved with anything illegal.

Unfortunately for everyone who has to deal with him, the person tasked with rewriting his code to suit a Practicus android was too lazy to take out the bit where he knows a lot about psychology and how to psychoanalyse people. It's mildly creepy to have him start staring blankly at you, and it often alarms people who meet him for the first time.
Chul is also very arrogant — though he has every right to be. He's incredibly talented at dancing, and his singing voice is fairly impressive (although he doesn't perform any songs). But it is a little off putting to be treated as boring, or to be told (loudly, unashamed) that ‘this is boring’. He looks bored, permanently, and he acts like a bored little kid.

heejoon likes androids. they do paperwork for him, and he doesn't have to worry about them taking his job because no matter how many androids there are in the world, there will always be those people who refuse to see an android psychologist over a human one. the whole point of psychologists is that people are comfortable talking to them, and so there's got to be a range of options. and androids can't really relate with family problems, while heejoon can (which is probably not that great, but it helps with his job so whatever).
when he first graduated from university, heejoon was idealistic. he wanted to help people. he got a job working in child protection services as a child psychologist. but it was too depressing to see kids in situations similar to what he had experienced as a child, and so he eventually resigned and created his own practice, where he can safely avoid all family-related angst that might remind him of his own past.

28 + m + humanMOST PEOPLE ASSUME that Haneul is just another spoiled brat whose parents have perfected the art of tax evasion. They assume that he throws money around to get things done; they hear his name and think of his great-grandfather, who was nearly imprisoned but got out of it with money. They ignore the legacy that he's trying to carve for himself, the legislation he's been fighting for since the beginning. They ignore the fact that he's trying to abolish the draft for the past two years, they ignore the fact that he puts far more time than he needs to into his job and does his best to represent the people's wishes.
It's times like these when he wonders why he bothers. Why try to help people who call for your resignation? Why help people who hate you and see you as nothing more than your father's puppet? But Haneul is, above all else, stubborn. Once he sets his mind on something, it's nigh impossible to change his course, and he's decided that even if it takes several thousand cups of coffee and close to a million arguments with higher-ups and lower-downs, Kim Haneul is damn well going to abolish the draft and get the military some half-decent funding.
Others are always asking why the military doesn't just buy a bunch of androids and then abolish the draft. Aside from the cost, Haneul refuses to let them because androids have feelings, and he intends to ask them if they actually want to work there before they get forced into it. It's a controversial opinion, but Haneul knows that when push comes to shove, he wants to have a foot in as many camps as possible. Maybe some of his father did rub off on him after all.

“ I’M NOT A GIRL ” Dahyung has lost count of the number of times he's had to correct people about his gender. His long hair throws so many people off, which he finds ridiculous. Because most girls don't have his jawline, or any of the other physical features that tend to belong to guys — this is also ignoring the fact that guessing someone's gender based on their physical appearance is risky at best: trans, agender and non-binary people exist, and with the amount of people who think he's a girl, he's fairly sure that people are just as blind as they are stupid.
It takes a lot to get Dahyung truly angry. Most of the time, he'll ignore you if you annoy him, or go quiet. Occasionally he'll walk off. The most common reaction you'll get from him when he's annoyed is a passive-aggressive smile and a quiet ‘you believe that, then.’ He doesn't see the point in wasting valuable time arguing with idiots, when he could be getting work done.
Nobody's really sure how he kills people. Nobody's ever witnessed it. He seems too much like he wouldn't sit in one spot for hours on end and then shoot someone from afar. He seems like the sort to engage in hand-to-hand combat, but other than that? He doesn't fit the typical assassin image. Not that that stops him from being one, because Dahyun's never been one to conform.

You might think that programming a housekeeping android as an eighteen-year-old boy might not be the smartest thing to do — given that eighteen-year-old boys tend to have very little interest in being helpful — but the people who made Dowoon had the sense to eliminate those... unhelpful character traits. Which leaves Dowoon as a helpful, respectful and reasonably mature eighteen-year-old who is also exceptionally friendly, bad at communicating with people his age, and loves architecture and space.
Scientists tend to be surprised by Dowoon's success. Which is rude because of course he was going to be successful, he was worked on for months and he's one of the newest models out there. Just because he's not one of their favourites (practicus: pretty; militus: good at bashing people up for abstrego) doesn't mean he's not good. Though, he isn't good. He's exceptional.
(yeah ok maybe he gets a bit salty about being underappreciated, but he's damn good at what he needs to do, so)
jisung doesn't do excitement. at most he'll get mildly interested in things, perhaps slightly invested — but excited? nope. the only things that get even close are the possibility of creating stronger alloys or stronger android skin; and getting an actual job where he uses his actual phd for something useful.
he doesn't understand abstrego. first, they turned him down. like, sure he may have gotten solid c's in everything except maths, physics and chemistry up until his final year of school (they were boring and he did well in the things that counted); sure he may have nearly lost his scholarship (he got it back); sure he may hate corporations for monopolising the market (it's justified); but why would you turn down someone with a phd in materials engineering? when your androids are so pathetic that they can bleed out from a single cut?
second, the aforementioned androids. if you have the capability to build people with bulletproof skin, why in god's name would you instead decide to build people with skin as weak as a human's? jisung has a long list of complaints to do with abstrego being more interested in commercialism than research. he's out here trying to create stronger alloys and lighter cast iron and other such useful things in the back of the shop, while they're wasting entire well-equipped factories and laboratories.

HWANG MINGYU ───────────── eighteen, fire class, male
Mingyu isn't dumb ! He swears, on his honour (or what's left of it) ! He just... acts really really dumb sometimes because part of the joy of being a teenager is you're still young enough to act like a kid. It helps that he is kind of babyfaced, and the dumb stuff he says and does is kind of endearing, a bit like how he runs and hides behind his friend whenever something scares him (which is a lot, because he's a coward).
Every family has a token gay (to cringe at the homophobic great-aunts/uncles) and a family disappointment. Mingyu just so happens to be both. He's not stupid, but he's not especially smart either, and when it comes to his affinity, Mingyu is an outright disappointment. When his affinity showed up in the last week that it possibly could, his grandmother claimed that it meant he would be unexpectedly brilliant — if that's the case, his brilliance is certainly taking a long time to show up. Mingyu struggles with the most basic actions: the most he's managed to do is make a flame into a rough sphere for not quite a minute.
Coming from a family known for their skill with fire, Mingyu's lack of talent is surprising. He should be powerful, but he's so weak with his affinity that there's no chance of him going the way his uncle did and being made to disappear. Nobody understands why he can't make it work — because it hasn't occurred to anyone that he doesn't understand it the way they're explaining it, and he's too afraid to ask for a different explanation.
DAENG CHITHIPKUL ──────────── twenty, earth class, male
So maybe Day is really really bad at introspection, and maybe he's outright awful at telling the truth when he's not okay — but he's alive, and he's getting pretty good with his affinity. It's not the best way of dealing with his problems, sure, but it's the only way that he knows. And it's easier to deal with them alone, without people worrying and asking if he's okay.
He doesn't know what it is that's actually wrong with him. He just knows that sometimes he finds it hard to think straight, can't motivate himself and feels exhausted to the point of nearly collapsing. But it's not sleep deprivation, it's not any physical cause — and Day may excel in all his classes, but he's never been very knowledgeable about any sort of medical conditions, neither mental nor physical. And there's no way he'd ask for help. He doesn't want to burden other people with his problems.
Day doesn't want to become the Protector. He can't fathom the idea of killing, and he hates being in the spotlight. He's not convincing or cunning enough to win without deaths, and even if he was there are far better candidates — in his eyes.
Maybe Minhyun's tactic for teaching isn't the best — generally people don't do well when thrown into challenging situations — but his motto is “practice makes perfect” and he'll gladly help someone by explaining it differently or going through the various degrees of difficulty with them. He makes things challenging for everyone, but he also sets his expectations low enough that nobody feels pressured to be perfect. He makes sure that the trainees know that he won't get annoyed at them if they mess up.
Minhyun also has a habit of ‘adopting’ trainees. If he comes across a trainee who needs a lot of help, or who's particularly small and cute, he'll ‘adopt’ them (wrap them in hugs constantly, offer them extra help and keep a very close eye on them lest one of the other trainers try to steal them away from him).
Hanjae really, really hates his affinity. He hates it because it's hard, and even after five years he still can't control it properly, and people expect him to be a genius and get it first go, just because the Kwons have always been expert air manipulators. Whenever he's asked to use it, he does his best to deflect and avoid it — because the fact of the matter is, Hanjae would rather be classless and never have to worry about learning this stuff.
Despite his complete lack of skill with his affinity, Hanjae excels in pretty much everything else. Particularly maths, which he does so well in that he hardly ever needs to pay attention. The concepts are easier to understand, and there's no physical component — aside from visualising shapes and such, but the hard stuff is on paper.
Following in the footsteps of other sensible Kwons, Hanjae has no interest in being the Protector. He doesn't want to die.And he doesn't stand a chance anyway.
Jinwoon has exceptional control over his affinity. He excels at all his classes. He's probably the most calm, levelheaded, mature person in the building nine times out of ten. But the self-proclaimed salt mine has absolutely no enthusiasm whatsoever. That's what happens when your natural talent outweighs your interest in something.
He doesn't really know how to talk to people. Aside from his few friends, Jinwoon doesn't really talk to many people, and those he does talk to, he's usually insulting them or teasing them about their mistakes. Because that's what you're supposed to do to be funny and relatable, right? Except it's not funny when he does it, apparently.
NAM TAEYEON WATER CLASS 23 MALE
Much like his element, Taeyeon's sole constant is what he's biologically composed of. His hair colour changes almost as regularly as his mood. One day he'll playful, excitable and have bright pink hair, the next he will have somehow gotten his hands on some more bleach and hair dye and it'll be blonde and he'll be brooding and quick to snap. Then there's the other days, when he's calm as a pond — though they're as rare as his natural black hair.
He probably has contacts somewhere in order to get his hands on hair dye so often, but it's Taeyeon, so he could just have kept the dyes since he first arrived so as to keep an air of mystery around him. He's theatrical, to say the least. But one thing is for sure — his hair has stopped changing quite so often. It's probably his scalp protesting, or an excuse to get people theorising about him again. After all, Taeyeon loves attention.
JANG NURI EARTH CLASS 24 MALE
Nuri has always been powerful. When his affinity first presented itself, he caused a 4.3 magnitude earthquake that reached as far as half a block from his house. Ever since that day, he's done his utmost to have perfect control over his ability, and ever since Councilman Park's Trials, he's wanted to be the Protector, to win the Trials. The principle of manipulating minerals in a person's body in order to defeat them has always been fascinating to him, particularly in terms of the medical applications it has. Being able to clot blood, or to fix iron deficiencies — there are many applications of it that Nuri believes are grounds enough to legalise the principle.
One thing Nuri is bad at is stopping and thinking. While he can think strategically, he's not so good at understanding his emotions, or at empathising. If he was, he might have realised that the dream he had when he was fifteen is no longer necessarily his true interest. Because for all his determination and studying to be chosen for the Trials, Nuri always seems to come back to the medical side of things. And if he really thought about it, he might realise that he's never really idolised Councilman Park for his becoming Protector, but for the principle he came up with and what it could potentially do for people.
Seungyoon is used to being told that he looks tired. Writing, choreographing and performing multiple songs a year for six years has got to him, and if he's being honest with himself he should really tone down the choreo before his knee gets any worse. But he's stubborn, and he doesn't want to stop, so he won't stop. Even though both his doctor and his manager have said that he needs to take it easier — needs to take the pills so he gets a good night's sleep for once, needs to stop spending hours upon hours in the practice room.

If you told someone that one half of 2Night first debuted in the abject failure that was P.L.A.T.I.N.U.M, you'd probably get laughed at. Minhyun has done his best to erase all memories concerning that group, and he'd like to think that nobody will ever associate him with the cringy 2013 aesthetic. Now he's known as the depressed half of 2Night, because instead of acknowledging his negative emotions and finding a way to fix it he opts for locking all his emotions in a box and avoiding anything that might set them off.

His name means star and he's in a group called Stardust. Which is ironic, because he's always been known as the member who kind of sucks at being an idol. He's not good at singing, he's not good at rapping, he's clumsy and uncharismatic — the only things he's got going for him are he's a good dancer and he's energetic. In other words, Byeol is basically a talentless visual except he can dance. And while Stardust's line distribution may have been kind enough to keep him from making a fool of himself (see: having maximum three lines in a song), The Unit isn't going nearly as easy on him. Because unlike the company, they're not the ones who picked him. They're not going to be embarrassed if he fails.
LEE JEONGMIN ───── TWENTY ───── MALE ───── MAKEUP ARTIST
Jeongmin is basically a grandmother in a guy's body. He's supportive and protective and considerate; he brings food that he knows the idols will be able to eat while he's doing their makeup (okay, sometimes it's to stop them from fidgeting, but); he seems innocent and soft — until it becomes apparent that he's really not, if you're on his bad side. It's just really hard to actually get on his bad side.
most contestants (and staff) know jinyoung as the judgemental, vengeful producer who looks like a twelve-year-old. and sure, he does give people less screen time if he doesn't like their face, and yes, he does make people who are rude to him look bad — but he's working with the footage he's been given, and it's their own fault for doing things that could make them look bad.
so yeah, he may be unsympathetic and kind of mean. but he's got to do something to stop people from asking how old he is or commenting on his height. and despite being a 1.64m tall ball of pure bitterness, jinyoung is dedicated to his job. maybe too much. everything has to be perfect, and often he'll just walk out when he doesn't agree with another editor's creative decisions because he just can't keep ignoring it but he doesn't actually have the authority to stop them.
As the maknae of Galaxy, the ‘golden child’, Jaewon is supposed to be cute. Because that's what they decided when he was a sixteen-year-old about to debut, and that's what he's been stuck with for the past four years. After much complaining on his part about wanting change — and wanting to be allowed to grow up — the company decided he could go on The Unit, since they needed some sort of publicity stunt to keep the group successful anyway. Maybe he can change his image this way. And maybe he can stop feeling so ordinary — because normal might be safe, but it's boring and if his fans found out that he's pretty much a normal 20-year-old guy then it would, in the company's words, ‘ruin everything’.

on stage, mingyu appears confident. but he's not confident in the slightest — he has very little faith in his own abilities, and he rarely takes initiative because he expects to fail or to be told that he's doing it wrong. he's working on this — he hasn't failed yet, so logically that means he is good at what he's doing. and hopefully once he gets that into his head, he can start to relax a bit rather than working so hard and staying to practice longer than everyone else.

kwon hanjae / twenty—two & vocal & main vocalist + maknae of 1st / d3, r1, v5, p4, c5 -
hanjae is a sunbeam. optimistic and seemingly always happy, he's not particularly intimidating even when annoyed. the only way he ever gets the other members to do what he wants is by acting disappointed — because nobody can stand to see a sunbeam unhappy. the most significant thing about him (aside from his voice) is his unimpressed laugh, which sounds like "ha. ha. ha. so funny" except it doesn't use words.

George — Said he had some charm, but “seemed too afraid that the stage would eat him alive to actually use it.” (N)
Sungjae — Was impressed that he did sing, despite being primarily a rapper – said it was good but could use improvement. (B)
Sora — Was a little less critical than George, but was also of the opinion that he had a very weak stage presence and was too timid. (N)
Minseok — Liked his dancing, but said that it could be a little sharper/cleaner. Called him charming ‘in the same way as a skittery cat’. (B)
ICE — Said his performance didn't seem particularly unique and that he needed to develop his own style (N)
Chrissy — Said he was good, but that his nervousness affected his performance. After asking him to freestyle, she said that his rapping was quite good but he needed to be more confident and express himself when rapping. (B)

Minseok — Said his dancing was messy and could use refinement. (N)
ICE — Said that while his singing was impressive, he lacked a unique style and needed to develop that in order to improve. (N)
Chrissy — Liked his performance, thought that it was impressive. (B)
