Around the Year in 52 Books discussion

The third read-a-thon will be kicking off today at noon EST (December 14)) and will run until December 17. More information can be found in the announcement thread.

This challenge is designed to be completed on your own. Look out for a read-a-thon at the start of the new year with a group challenge.

Move from START to FINISH by completing tasks. Each task determines the number of spaces you can move. Land on a special space and follow the specific directions.

Penguin - You're stuck on the ice! Stand still until another member moves and saves you.
Reindeer - Run away! Move back two spaces.
Holiday Lights - Get inspired. Move ahead three spaces.
Mistletoe - You know what that means... There's no kissing in this game but join the friend ahead of you and share their space.

Notes:
- New rule: each move should be considered a distinct move and you should follow the directions after each one. For instance, if you read 100 pages and complete a non-fiction book, you should move one, follow any special instructions, and then move the two spaces for non-fiction book. If you want to complete all your moves once at the end of the day, that's fine. Just move each step separately.
- Identical symbols cannot be overlapped. For instance, you can't count the same 3-hour stretch as 1, 2, and 3 hours of reading. If you read for 4 hours straight (wow!) or one hour, take a break, and read three hours then you could move four spaces.
- In regards to the ✶ tasks, if you finish any book, you can move ahead one space. If it fits in a certain category then you get bonus spaces. But those aren't cumulative (i.e. A book with a one-word title gets you two spaces, not three).
- Tasks can be completed more than once.

Please keep track of your own progress and comment in a new comment when you move spaces. That makes it easier for members when they land on a special space. I will update the board and place pieces every day around 8am.

I can’t remember from the last readathon, if you complete a book you started before the readathon can you count it for “finish a book”, or do only books started and finished during the readathon count?

I"m not sure but either way I ended up at space 1 lol. Thats a good question....

Now I'm stuck on a Penguin.

For the mistletoe, you only join the friend if they're ahead of you. So, Tracy, in your case you would just stay put :) No need to keep going back to Vanessa.

Bryony, I honestly don't remember what was decided for the first read-a-thon but since we have a shortened event, I think it's perfectly fine if you count previously started books for the 'finish a book' task.

Oh geez... now I have to figure out where I’m supposed to be 🤔

I found this game very confusing (for some reason) last time around, so I'll try it again. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

Since I very likely won't remember, I'll list them here:

Forgot to post last night, so I'll update for yesterday, and post again later for today:

Starting from Space 5.

I finished What I Thought Was True, which is by a female author - 2 spaces, bringing me to Space 7.
I participated in the A-Z folder - 1 space, bringing me to Space 8
I read for 3 hours straight - 3 spaces, bringing me to the Reindeer, which pushes me back to the Penguin so I'm stuck again.

Gives me the perfect opportunity to ask though -- the spaces that we earn for pages read, is that total per day or total for the whole Readathon?

- Finish a short story or novella - 1 space (on space 29) - How Much Land Does a Man Need
- Holiday Lights - 3 spaces -> Finished!!!

Today's progress:
- Read 100 pages - 1 space --> Space 10
- Read for 2 hours straight - 2 spaces --> Space 12
- Completed a game - I did the Grinch Tag --> Mistletoe (Space 13). Since that lets me jump ahead to where someone else is, does that mean I can jump ahead and join people who are finished?

Otherwise:
- Completed The Four Seasons - 1 space to Space 14
- That means I completed all games -- 3 spaces to Space 17, which is a reindeer that knocks me back to 15
- Read 600 pages total throughout the readathon -- closest I saw was 500 pages, which is 2 spaces back to Space 17, that knocks me back again to 15... unless it applies as 100 pages (1 space ahead) and then 500 pages (2 spaces ahead), which puts me at 18

I didn't see any rule though about not joining the space of people who had reached the end though, so I'm pretty sure that should apply.
