The rent collector is known by many for being a really mean and angry person, but she ends up helping Sang learn how to read so that Sang can start making a new and better life for her son,Nisay. Throughout the book, Sang develops a love for literature and decides to go through life with a better understanding of it. When the rent collector disappears, Sang has to provide for herself and her son and find a way to get them through life on their own and sets out to find out what happened to Soapep Sin.
I really enjoyed reading this book. I loved that it was a book that really showed how family is so important and you would want to do anything for your family. It is also a book about love, sacrifice, and a lot of forgiveness. I think this book is very real and it is important, in my opinion, to read about situations that actual people can go through. I have a lot of respect for Sang Ly and her family.
This book is not the typical heart-breaking or depressing book. Obviously is has many things in it that are sad or you wish would be different, but this book is about love, hope, and possibility. I highly recommend this novel.
