SciFi and Fantasy Book Club discussion

I read a series back in the 80s I guess. A fantasy series of 2 or 3 books. The protagonist was a warrior who was kinda dumb, it has some link to Ishtar, and vaguely remember floating cities... Any ideas welcome as to title or author. I also remember the paperbacks were those oversize ones.
