Maggie Tiramisu is cake-ish. I'll count it!

message 202: by Shanea (new)

Shanea | 358 comments Really, tiramisu in a special category that I have not considered, it contains cookies, but is more similar to a cake or a custard... You just had to break the question, didn't you?

message 203: by Dawnstream (new)

Dawnstream Hello! Please, call me Dawn. I drink water, coffee and blueberry green tea. I live in (not D.C.) Washington. I try not to read too much of any one author's work. They all eventually repeat themselves too much and annoy me. In page numbers, I have probably read more Terry Goodkind or Margaret Weiss and Tracy Hickman than any other authors, but that was a long time ago.

Hello :)
My name is Melissa (a lot of people call me Mel or Meli).

My favourite beverage is coffee, hot chocolate, scotch, or beer depending on the day and the weather.

I'm in something I'm calling "literary rehab" - After decades of loving reading but moving around a bunch (plus a bad break-up that included the theft of my books and art collection), I have a small collection of books that are a mix between favourites, yet-to-read, and old text books. While I have a preference towards Dickens, I don't have a most read author because I continually change what genre I read unless I'm going through a binge phase. I love To Kill a Mockingbird, The Dress Lodger (Sheri Holman), A Solitaire Mystery/Sophie's World (Jostein Gaarder) and my light "vacation binges" have included Harry Potter, Hunger Games, Star Wars, and anything by Grisham.

Cake... just barely... but I'm a sugar addict, so I love them all.

Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

LobsterQuadrille | 170 comments My name is Victoria, my favorite beverage is tea(iced or hot), my most-read author is probably L.M. Montgomery or Agatha Christie, and I definitely favor cake over cookies and pie. I am from the U.S.A.

I was part of this group for a while, but was not able to keep up with the books, so I dropped out. I'm ready to try again.

It can be a bit overwhelming at times, I know. Just remember that it is for fun, not another task on your to-do list!

Kadijah Michelle (kadmich) I was dealing with some health issues, and the medication made it impossible to concentrate. I couldn't read a paragraph, let alone a book, so I felt like I was failing at life. Thank God that has all passed, and I'm killing my reading goal this year.

lydia Hello everybody! I'm Lydia and I'm completely new on goodreads :) I live in Greece and I absolutely love cookies, cakes and tea. My most read author is probably Dostoevsky but I have many others that I love as well, like Dickens, Austen and Kerouac.

message 214: by Abigail (new)

Abigail Bok (regency_reader) Welcome, Lydia! You’re already so well-read, we look forward to hearing your thoughts. Dostoevsky was my father’s favorite author, too.

message 215: by Bob (new)

Bob G (neverlost) Hello all!

I am Bob from Minnesota, so my favorite beverage is ice. (Well, I actually prefer hot coffee and hot cocoa for obvious reasons!)

I have no favorite authors or books. I am working through four lifetime reading lists which include classics, 20th century novels, ...

Oh yeah: favorite food is ice cream followed by chocolate chip cookies and then anything else with chocolate.

As to where I am from: live in Minnesota now but started life in Brooklyn. Left there after the Dodgers deserted!

Welcome Bob :)

Have you read The Chocolate War series? It's on my absurdly long to-be-read list, but your post made me think about it :)

P.S. I've only been there once but I loved Brooklyn (I've never gone to Minnesota).

Haven't read the Chocolate War series.

Minnesota (northern part) is much like Manitoba. I live near Minneapolis and I think Winnipeg is probably similar to it.

I see you are from Calgary, nice place I would like to visit some day!

Nicole Waggoner (nicolewaggonerauthor) | 2 comments Hello! My name is Nicole Wagggoner. I am a life-long lover of literature, with too many favorites to list, and new member of the Goodreads community. I spent 12 years teacher AP and pre-AP/Gifted and Talented English and writing courses and now teach symposiums on 19th Century American Literature, Structure and Style, and Literary Criticism courses over works ranging from Gatsby to Modern British Lit. I am a recent transplant to Oklahoma and enjoy all things theater, patios, great conversation over wine, and water in all its forms. I recently published my first novel (book 1 in a series of 3) that will drop in April of 2016. I am happy to be here and look forward to thoughtful discussions!

Meg (meg_mielke) Hi all - I've been lurking in this group for a while now...getting book recommendations and following threads but I'd like to become a more active participant. What better way than to start with an introduction! I'm Megann - live in the Washington DC area. I'm a big fan of Russian, British and American classics and have read mostly within the pre-1910 or 1910-1959 brackets. I also speak Spanish well and love Latin American Lit. I'm trying to get more into modern lit though. and..... lemonade and cookies, but not together!

message 223: by Katriina ❆ (new)

Katriina ❆ (ktxcn) Hello :)❆

I'm Katriina, 20 years old and usually go by the name of Katyusha. I'm a native Finn from Northern Karelia (which is quite close to Russia) but I'm living in Germany where I'm studying commercial law. :)

My favourite beverage is obviously coffee, which I drink way too much and way too often. I also have a passion for tea.

My most read and favourite author is Dostoevsky, and I generally read russian authors a lot. I'm looking forward to explore other classics than the russian ones though :)

I don't really like neither cookies, nor cake nor pie, but I'd go for cookies if I had to choose :)

That’s a wonderfully healthy way to start your adult life! I wish I had done so. And this group is a wonderful way to feed your mind, so you’re off to a great start!

message 225: by Robin (new)

Robin Hello everyone!

I'm Robin, from the Netherlands and I just discovered Goodreads two weeks ago. Since then I use the website every day, from the moment I wake up in the morning until I fall asleep in the evening reading. I love reading, when I start a book, I just have to finish it, even when it's a bad/boring/hard book. My most read author has to be J.K. Rowling, because since I practically grew up with Harry Potter (I'm 28), I read the whole series every year. But the authors I most enjoy are Jane Austen, John Irving, Isabel Allende and a couple of Dutch authors you're probably not familiar with.

My favorite beverage while reading is tea, lots and lots of tea, the more the better, especially with chocolate pie. When I'm not reading Belgium beers, the strong ones :)

message 226: by Abigail (new)

Abigail Bok (regency_reader) Welcome, Robin! We dumb Americans don’t know as many languages as the multilingual Europeans, but I’d be very interested in reading some Dutch fiction. Are there any of your favorites who write in English or have been translated?

Robin Abigail wrote: "Welcome, Robin! We dumb Americans don’t know as many languages as the multilingual Europeans, but I’d be very interested in reading some Dutch fiction. Are there any of your favorites who write in ..."

Thank you Abigail! They teach us different languages at school from when we're ten years old, I guess since we're all so close to other (foreign) countries in Europe? Two of my favorite Dutch authors which have been translated are Hella S. Haasse (try 'In a dark wood wandering' or 'The Tea Lords' and Jan Wolkers (Turkish Delight).

Tehreem Fayyaz (tehreemfayyaz) AOA
I am Tehreem Fayyaz from Pakistan, 16 years old. I am a slow but dedicated learner. Currently I am reading The Harry Potter Series and some other books too. I would prefer coffee over cake and pie and my nick name is TIMI. My favorite author is Jane Austen.

message 230: by Abigail (new)

Abigail Bok (regency_reader) Hi, Timi, good taste! Harry Potter and Jane Austen!

message 231: by Robin (new)

Robin Welcome Tehreem! I love Jane Austen and Harry Potter (and coffee) as well :)

message 232: by Lizbeth (new)

Lizbeth | 23 comments Welcome Tahreem!

Harry Potter and Jane Austen. What fun! I can imagine that if Jane Austen went forward in time and showed up in a Harry Potter novel, she would have been a lot like Hermione. :-)

Ok, now I want to see Jane Austen and Hermione meet up and smile at each other approvingly.

Not being able to read while you're dealing with illness can be so disheartening. And it is so rewarding when that ability comes back again. So glad you can enjoy your books again!

Robert Ambros | 2 comments Hi. My name is Robert Ambros, I’m 56 years old, and new to Goodreads. People call me Bob. Favorite beverage? I drink sparkling spring water and a lot of it. No cakes or pie: ice cream. Most read author? The guy I can’t get away from is Marcel Proust and it’s that one work: Remembrance of Things Past. The funny thing is, I read the first half of the first book, Swann’s Way, 30 years ago and forgot about it for 25 years. Now I just keep going back to it. He somehow mesmerizes me.

I spent my youth in NJ, most of my adult life in upstate NY, and now live in central Florida. Nice to meet everyone.

message 238: by Whitney (new)

Whitney (helloooooo) | 13 comments Hi group! I've been here for several weeks, and I'm following the War of the worlds thread, but I don't think I've done an intro yet. (On WoW, I recently added a strange thread. Sorry. I have a degree in English Lit; I live and breathe lit crit, and I can read between the lines in my sleep :))

Whitney is my name. Favorite daily beverage is tap water. If I don't have a refillable bottle of water nearby at all times, I feel uncomfortable. But I do love a good mixed drink as well!

I read a lot of British authors. My two current favorites are P.G. Wodehouse and Dorothy Sayers.

Cookies!

Fayetteville, PA. Middle of nowhere and I love it.

message 239: by Abigail (new)

Abigail Bok (regency_reader) Hi, Whitney, P. G. Wodehouse and Dorothy Sayers—two underappreciated masters! Have you read Margery Allingham’s mysteries yet?

message 240: by Lizbeth (new)

Lizbeth | 23 comments Hello, all.

I used to make pies with homemade crusts that got raves. Now, I don't bake at all, nor eat baked goods. Yes, I have joined the gluten-averse. As a comedian said, "I don't know what gluten is, but apparently it's delicious!"

Thank goodness literature is written dairy-free with zero trans-fats and low on the glycemic index.

message 241: by Doris (new)

Doris (webgeekstress) Belated introduction:
My name is Doris, but I'm more easily found under my digital name of webgeekstress.

In order of volume, I drink plain water, tea, and red wine; in order of preference, I drink sparkling wine, or ... well sparkling wine. Okay, water, when there's no sparkling wine to be had.

Most read author is probably Georgette Heyer.

Hmm, not really much of a sweets girl, and when I do indulge, it's usually candy. Probably a toss-up between cake and cookies (I've never really understood the appeal of pie).

I am a California native currently living in Turkey.

message 242: by Sarah (new)

Sarah P | 3 comments Hello, my name is Sarah and I am just discovering Good Reads and think it is my dream site!

Favourite drink - tea during the day, red wine or G&T out of hours.

I think that favourite author is difficult as I tend to read depending on how I am feeling, but if I want some humour I will read Terry Pratchett, my comfort read will be Georgette Heyer (like Doris!). I like to try out books that I have read a good review of or where I just like the look of the summary on the back! I do love poetry, tending towards older stuff but if it speaks to me then I enjoy it.

I did English Lit A'Level - which will tell you that I am from the UK/England and enjoyed reading the classics (although am I the only person who wasn't sold on Wuthering Heights?).

I want to discover more so made it a goal for the year to read a Dickens novel, I have bought Great Expectations, as I like the story, but have to admit that I just keep looking at it! I am hoping this group will help me get going!

Definitely cake, I love baking!

message 243: by Abigail (new)

message 245: by Shanea (new)

Shanea | 358 comments Oh dear. I have never heard of Georgette Heyer before! Is there a gaping hole in my life knowledge I need to fill?
Conveniently, I'm already on the internet, I guess.

message 246: by Abigail (new)

Abigail Bok (regency_reader) Hi, Shanea, if you like Jane Austen you will probably like Georgette Heyer. She invented the genre of Regency romance, and did it better than anybody since (IMHO). She writes vividly realized novels that don’t insult your intelligence, with wonderful secondary characters and depictions of life in Regency England. (She also wrote some modern-day novels, which are awful, and some less-successful historicals from other periods.) Like Jane Austen, her novels use the “marriage plot,” but the whole story isn’t about palpitating emotion and frustrated (or realized) desire; they are definitely not bodice-rippers.

message 247: by Whitney (new)

Whitney (helloooooo) | 13 comments I am putting the Margery Allingham mysteries on my list!

Sterling Foxhill | 1 comments Hi! My name is Sterling, but some of my friends call me Silver (not very creative, I know). I am from Denver, but I spend most of my time in Huntsville, Alabama. My favorite beverage is a cold Coke. My most read author? I have no idea. I just read what sounds appealing to me. This is a habit I am trying to break, so I can branch out and discover more. My favorite author on the other hand would be Michael Critchton. Cookies are the best!
