Hi everyone
I am fairly new to this site so here is some information about me:
Get to really know….. Martin Smith
Where were you brought up? In Cardiff. I was educated at Stacey Road Infants and Junior School then Howardian High School.
Did you have a Nick Name? In Form One at High School I wrote a story about a burglar called Slippery Five which I had to read out to the class. From then on everyone called me Slip.
Any regrets from school days? I left school in my first year in the sixth form at Howardian. My English master Mr. Brinn expressed disappointment. Perhaps I should have stayed on and tried for University to study English.
What did you do after school? I signed up for five year articles of clerkship with a local firm of Chartered Accountants. I was paid £2 per week and nearly 10shillings (50 pence today) was taken in national insurance. I qualified in 1967 and received a certificate of congratulations from the President of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales for being a member for fifty years in October.
Marital status? Divorced.
Children? Three grown up daughters.
Significant Other? Hester my partner we have been together for seventeen years.
Pets? Two Jack Russell dogs. Charlie and Suki who love our regular walks in the National Park.
Where do you live now? Libanus with a glorious view of Pen Y Fan.
Favourite Saying? “Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter, and those who matter don't mind.” ― Bernard M. Baruch

Most exciting activity? Ice climbing. Spent a week in Colorado abseiling down ice cliffs then climbing back up using crampons and small ice axes. Brilliant!

Favourite singer? Whitney Houston. Had to write a poem about her when she died far too young.

When did you start writing? I attended a creative writing class six years ago. One exercise was to create a character. My exercise forms the preface to the first novel in the series Minion or Master. I described my protagonist George Howden as an old man. The novels commence with his life as a young business man and will finish at the description in the preface with one final novel.

Favourite writers? Shakespeare for his understanding of people. John Grisham for superb plotting. John Le Carre for subtle complications and well- drawn characters Ian Fleming for fun and joie de vivre.

Near death experiences? Having to ice axe arrest whilst sliding towards an abyss after summiting Mont Blanc.
Being rescued with my terrier dog Bonnie fighting the tide in the Gwaundraeth Estuary.

Any other interests? Mountain walking. I am an ambassador for the Brecon Beacons National Park. Most week- ends we find somewhere new to explore in the Park. It has been a privilege to guide visitors in the Park for many years.

Favourite walk? There are many. One outstanding walk is to climb Cribarth from Craig yr Nos and explore the wild area surrounding Carreg Goch and Sinc Giedd. We enjoyed Christmas lunch in the snow there one year.

Wish? To maintain enough energy to complete my marathon undertaking of writing all the Minion or Master novels. Now writing the fourth set in Vietnam but have at least another eight to do!
And my three international thrillers:
MINION OR MASTER SERIES
INTERNATIONAL THRILLERS
FROM 1966 to the PRESENT
WRITTEN BY MARTIN SMITH
The Concept
The Minion or Master novels are fast paced complex International thrillers which follow the life of George Howden as a young man into his late sixties.
The period covered is from 1966 to 2017.
The genre is action adventure with political intrigue.
Each novel is set in a special location and might deal with a political movement, a war or other event all of which are factual.
The first page of the first novel describes George in his sixties. He receives a top secret message from Sir Adrian Cuthbert the Permanent Secretary at H M Treasury.
The resolution of this message will be dealt with when the last novel in the series is written.
The novels analyse personal relationships and the thoughts and feelings of the main characters. Sometimes characters are subservient (a minion) in the story and sometimes dominant (a master).

MINION or MASTER
The First Three Novels
George Howden, a young inexperienced Chartered Accountant working in Bermuda in 1966 is forced by circumstance to try to defeat a prostitution and drugs gang in New York. His business involvement with the ship Ocean Star makes him an accessory in smuggling chrome ore out of Africa and smuggling armaments for terrorists into Africa. He must prove his innocence and find out who is using him as a fall guy.
George gets involved with characters who are mixed up with murder, sex, blackmail, government power politics, drug smuggling, drug dependency and romance.
The action starts in Africa and moves seamlessly between Bermuda, New York, and the Atlantic Ocean.
“The suspense is gripping throughout all 360 plus pages” Clarion Review.
“A fun romp of a novel, featuring a colourful cast of characters” Blue Ink Review.
“Sound characters and momentum keep the story exciting” Kirkus Review.
“I really enjoyed this book. It is well planned and written.” Melrose Publishing.
“Great thrillers do not have to be, to paraphrase Ian Fleming, literature with a capital L. But they can come close. Minion or Master comes close. “James Burt, Clarion Review
MINION or MASTER II features many of the colourful characters from the first novel with some exciting new ones being featured.
George Howden wants to create an international shipping business competing against the evil Greek ship owner Mercator Tinopolis who plots George’s downfall. George must enter the seedy underworld of London’s Soho to find answers.
George brings his black Bermudan girlfriend, Leonora, to London where they face hostility from his working class mother. His father is more interested with England's progress in the 1966 soccer world cup. George and Leonora must win support from the upper class family of George’s high flying civil servant friend Adrian Cuthbert for Leonora to succeed with her ambition to train as a singer.
Adrian’s Uncle Edward is attracted to Leonora and develops a jealousy towards George.
Captain Kato, George’s shipping partner, is an unwilling but star player in an hilarious event at a cricket match at Blayden Castle the ancestral home of Adrian Cuthbert.
George’s knowledge of computers enables him to assist the FBI to uncover bribery and corruption in New York and Washington involving the secretive international criminal Jamil El Hassan who has a hold on Mercator Tinopolis.
The Minion or Master concept is explored in the relationships between family members, Soho gangsters, civil servants and US politicians.

Minion or Master III When George Howden with his shipping colleague, Captain Agios Kato, arrive in Hong Kong in 1967 the Colony is plagued by riots and strikes stirred up by Maoist provocateurs.
In Macau, Kato fights Triad gangsters to save his lover Jasmine. George must use all his mental powers to rescue Leonora from Mercator Tinopolis and Jamil El Hassan who are out to destroy them.
Edward with his friend Sir David Farnsworth, from the Foreign and Colonial Office in London, make George an offer he finds difficult to refuse.
The enigmatic Chinaman Ah Bok and Gunnery Sergeant Amos Lewis add to the cast of colourful characters.

These books are available in paper back or e format from Amazon or
Barnes and Noble and paper back only from Feedaread.com.

Future novels
Minion or Master IV set in Vietnam in 1968 available late 2018.
