1/1 - The Bell Jar ★★★★

A book that, naturally, did not left me feeling happy or inspired. Nonetheless I liked the writing and the character was interesting and, even though I am fortunate enough not to be living in a bell jar, did match with my character type in some small aspects, for instance our undesire to be in a relationship for the feeling of being tied down to something.

(p.s. I saw in the overview that I'm accidentally signed up for 2 books, however I only signed up for 1 book but I had 2 books in my post because I wanted to choose 1 of them, so I understand the confusion!)

Mikayla, I noticed you wrote a message along the same lines earlier. Since you're a picky reader this particular challenge might not be the best suited for you, but I'm sure you will find other fantastic challenges you can join throughout the year, so keep your eyes open for those :)
And if you do find inspiration from any of the sites that have been linked, let me know and I'll happily add you to the list of participants :)

Mandee Lei (mandeelei) | 1 comments Since I am coming into this a bit late, please mark me down for 1. I am an INFP and my pick is Anne of Avonlea - L.M. Montgomery.

message 109: by Amy (new)

Amy | 13 comments I am ISTJ and I picked Far from the Madding Crowd by Thomas Hardy based on the character Bathsheba Everdeen.

This book was excellent and I definitely see the ISTJ in Bathsheba and her actions...strong-willed (she defies convention and does not chose a bailer), stubborn (refusing to see what is right in front of her), Honest and Direct (the way she talks and gets straight to the matter), closely related to being honest and direct is being insensitive (what is view as direct can come across wrong to others).

I'm an ISTJ too, and Bathesba seems very interesting so I might pick it up if I have free time in January after my other book reads!

message 116: by Megan (new)

Megan (lahairoi) | 7470 comments Just completed my third book - Abby Elliot in Guilty Wives by James Patterson. Entertaining, if a bit repetitive. I enjoyed the mystery of the story. The main characters were well-written and complex. And the portrayal of life in prison was pretty accurate - don't for a minute think that similar events don't happen in American prisons every day. Worth reading. 3.5 stars

3/3 - challenge completed!

message 117: by Megan (new)

Megan (lahairoi) | 7470 comments Just completed another book with a personality like mine (ESTJ-A) - Katherine Jackson - Hidden Figures: The American Dream and the Untold Story of the Black Women Mathematicians Who Helped Win the Space Race by Margot Lee Shetterley. I am conflicted about this book, so I'm going to separate my review into three categories. For content, this book is amazing. The women discussed in the book were groundbreaking not only for their race but also their gender. For research, this book is well-founded and appears thoroughly vetted. For writing, the author was not up to the task of her research or subjects. Her writing is boring, repetitive, and not cohesive. The timeline she uses is non-linear and leads to her characters being confused between time and space within the narrative. And her forays into the greatness of math and NASA detracts for her characters themselves. The only reason my rating is as high as three stars was for the amazing women the book discusses. The writing alone would be 1.5 stars. Overall, not worth reading. 2.5 stars

Hi Dania, I was unsure whether you were actually participating in this month's challenge. Should I add you to the participant's list?

Hi Rick, I noticed you hadn't added you to the list for this challenge, so please forgive me if I've overlooked you :) Were you reading more than the one book for this challenge? And I think you're the only one that read a play! How did you like it?

message 136: by Hardcover Harlot (new)

Hardcover Harlot (hardcoverharlot) Definitely won't be able to finish my 1 by tonight. I'm 22% into Mansfield Park and I'm just not really feeling it? Which shocks me, because I really do love Austen. Alas, I fear I will probably walk away from this one for awhile. Great challenge idea, even though I couldn't get it done this time!
