Sheila’s journey into environmental activism began with her discovery that high concentrations of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) were present in the marine animals that the Inuit were eating. Mothers were afraid to nurse their children out of fear of chemicals being passed through breast milk. Part of the problem with POPs is that the toxins are present in the Arctic in high concentrations but are actually produced in southern climates.

I have never really been afraid to eat any of my food before. I know how hard it would be to consider giving up some of the food that I enjoy eating. Have you ever thought about what chemicals may be present in the foods that we eat? Does it make you want to change any of your eating habits?
