For those wondering which book to read next in the list, I would recommend We Need New Names by NoViolet Bulawayo. Nice easy read. And it spoke to me specifically because the narrator's voice is exactly how we used to speak as children.
Only read about 4 of the books so I am excited to give this a shot!!

I've read just 2 of the books in the list previously,
Half of a Yellow Sun by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie in 2016 and
July's People by Nadine Gordimer in 2012
The others that I have in my next 2 years-worth to-read list are:
Nervous Conditions by Tsitsi Dangarembga - (I'm just waiting for this one to come back in to the library)
Woman at Point Zero by Nawal El-Saadawi
Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
So Long A Letter by Mariama Bâ
and The Joys of Motherhood by Buchi Emecheta.
I'll probably read a reader's choice one and perhaps I will add others as I go along?

Good you're participating, George. Of the 5 you plan to read, I particularly recommend Nervous conditions and Americanah, both are excellent books.

It is a list published by the Royal African Society.

The list appeared in 2014 on http://whatsonafrica.org/50-books-by-... - and it has been put together by Dele Meiji Fatunla and Bookshy Blogger’s Zahrah Nessbit-Ahmed.
The second half of the books can be found on the bookshy site:

Thanks, noted!

I have been slacking off in the reading of 50 African Women - so I have decided to give it a go again :) I have just ordered what looked interesting, was available and not too long in the first half of the alphabet - so now just waiting for the books to pour in from to libraries :)
Anybody else want to join some 50AW summer reading?
Anybody else want to join some 50AW summer reading?
I would love to, though I fear I won't have lots of time to catch up. I have been reading several books by African women, but few are on the 50AW list...
We could try and read books together (as a summer bonus group read)?
And let's also vote for books from this list for the next regional group reads! 2018 Sept/Oct poll for example. Anetq, maybe you should send a message to all group members as a reminder to vote?

I find it's a bit hard to do something very organised - as availability is a bit random on these books - very few exist as e-books, for those of us who use those, and what is accessible, is well a bit dependent on where you are and what libraries you may have access to.
But I am up for 'Buddy Reading' and setting up threads for those who want to read the same book at the same time? (My suggestions in the next comment :) )

Thanks for reminding me, yes I will, just wanted to make sure I included all relevant news today :)

I’d be up for The Joys of Motherhood by Buchi Emecheta and I have access to a copy!
Also interested to read Ama Ata Aidoo but I don’t have access to her novels through my library and need to wait a bit before I spend more money on books 😁

Do you have a favorite of the nine you've read so far? I'm also reading Nervous Conditions now and quite like it; I think it may become my favorite of my five.
I just saw that Amazon.com seems to have a sale on Aminatta Forna's books - so The Memory of Love is 1,99§ https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...
...just in case anyone else need or want a copy of #6 on the list :) Other works by Forna are on sale as well.

I have now ordered Bessie Head's book "The Collector of Treasures and other Botswana Village Tales" and I am really looking forward to read it.
I hope, as it's short stories, that my English will prove sufficient. :0) I think, it makes sense for me, to start with short stories/anthologies and then work my way up to more and more pages. Well that's the plan anyway. :0)

It's the same in Spain, there are very few books edited by african authors, Chinua Achebe and Chimamanda are the most popular, but when you start reading them, then you want more and it's almost impossible to find more authors, specially women african writers so I read them in english :-).
When Rain Clouds Gather" and Maru (Maru is almost a short story, a novella) are the two books by Bessie Head I have read and I totally recommend them. Bessie Head is a luminous writer.
saludos
I'll join the no-translations choir; Not much in Danish either. An odd selection of things on very small "exotic literature" publishing houses :) (Luckily I have great access to the English versions through libraries) But it is sad that some of these great writers never find readers outside the English readers (og French for Francophone Africa) - I fear the explanation is simple; probably isn't very lucrative. Still a shame though!
The same echo here: very few translations to Dutch. But on the other hand, it is equally amazing that very few African authors write in their mother tongue, which means that their works remain inaccessible to a large part of Africans. By writing in English (or French or Portuguese) they do reach a large international audience.
I also feel this list of 50 books by African women is somehow biased, as it mainly contains books in English, and most of the books are written a long time ago. I like reading those classics, but African lit by women has more to offer.
