Are there weapons in your book? What kinds of weapons? What's your character's weapon of choice? :)

Kevin Moore (kevmoorewrites) | 63 comments My book is set in the 20s and mycharacters Wil Driscoll and Albert Crow always have a 38 special on them somewhere. When I get to book 3 the Tommy Guns are coming out!

I'm not really a gun guy so what I've included in my book I've had to look up online. Do you guys sometimes feel like you're not familiar enough with weapons (or other objects like clothing, tools, cars, etc) to competently write about them?

Brian Basham (brianbasham) | 390 comments In my novel the police have assault rifles while the resistance has homemade zip guns. Wars have moved to the virtual world, so most of the weaponry has moved there as well. Some of the cooler weaponry won't show itself until the third book of the series. There are some cool tech toys they get to play with throughout the series though.

In the first season of my serial story The Ghost, the heroine spends most of it wielding dual machetes.

None of my characters duel wield. I like to have one hand free for lapel grabbing :p

There are usually some kind of thin katana like sword in my stories. I'm also a fan of pistols. The gun-kata from Equilibrium had a huge effect on me :p

J. David Clarke (clarketacular) | 418 comments Wizard in My Window has some special magic items, but the only true weapon in my stories is in an upcoming fantasy series. It's a sword supposedly forged by the gods themselves (called the Seven Lords in this fictional world). Each of them apparently imbued the weapon with some of his own power, and because it was made for spiritual leaders (called Keepers), it has a requirement that it only be used in self defense. To ensure that it is, it must "taste" its wielder's own blood before anyone else's. So you have to be wounded first before you can use it. The ancient texts that teach the monks of the sword are vague about the consequences should you try to use it and end up getting someone else's blood on it first, but one thing is clear: it's NOT a good idea. (Nothing that displeases all 7 Lords is a good idea in this world.)

I'm hoping to get back to this book sometime before the end of the year, but it may be early next year before it comes out.

Kevin Moore (kevmoorewrites) | 63 comments @Bryan - I can see how setting your book in a fantasy world has its perks since the vast majority of readers have no experience wielding a sword. I suppose there will always be that one re-enacter/amateur smith who will complain though ;)

Devrie Spaulding | 13 comments I am partial to swords, knives or any other kind of blades. In my first book (YA Fantasy), the main character (Nami) finds she has a knack for throwing knives but also develops some magic abilities. Others in the druid colony use the usual bows and blades with a mixture of magical attacks.

In the book I am writing now, the sisters reluctantly carry daggers but the other "monster hunters" use guns and things; even nets and tranquilizer guns depending on the monster.

Claire (cycraw) | 278 comments Swords, bow and arrows, daggers. Those are my characters' weapons of choice.

message 9: by Devrie (new)

Devrie Spaulding | 13 comments Love them all! Yes I do. :) I absolutely enjoy writing in the YA Fantasy area but there doesn't seem to be any agents wanting to take on new authors writing it. So with my second one, I switched to YA Paranormal. Maybe I will self publish the first one. Just like @Bryan said, you can do whatever you want because it's your world.

message 10: by Claire (new)

Claire (cycraw) | 278 comments Unfortunately paranormal is not so hot either now.

message 11: by Devrie (new)

Devrie Spaulding | 13 comments Well heck. I'll get it right sooner or later. lol.

message 12: by Devrie (new)

Devrie Spaulding | 13 comments I do need to stay true to my inner voice, however. I love reading and writing fantasy and paranormal stuff so if I have to self publish them all, then I will. No biggie. The characters in my book seem to refuse to be written any other way.

message 13: by Claire (new)

Claire (cycraw) | 278 comments I'm writing YA fantasy too so I know how you feel. But I am determined to try traditional first. I'll see what happens afterwards if I don't manage.

message 14: by Devrie (new)

Devrie Spaulding | 13 comments Yeah the ideal way is to get an agent. I haven't given up yet either. It can be draining though.

@Bryan Dirks are awesome ^^

@Kevin Certainly haha Online provides a good grounds for research but there's truly nothing better than first hand experience. And If i can't get my hands on something or experience something, i do the best next thing and interview someone that does have the experience haha

@Bisky Gotta have one hand free for lapel grabbing ;)

Brittany Willows (brittanymwillows) As The Calypsis Project is based in the 25th century, the human characters in my novel use pulse rifles and other high-tech versions of the firearms we have around today. And they use the occasional combat knife here and there when guns are not an option. :)

I enjoy writing about the weapons of my alien organization much more, though. The alien characters are armed with a variety of weapons and explosives that utilize electricity (either drawn from the air or from a battery) and a substance known as "crytal", which can be liquefied, hardened, or baked into a crystalline state.

They also use energy blades, which can be formed into the shape of swords and daggers. My two leading alien characters often dual wield the sword-type, which is also a favorite of mine. :D

Kevin Moore (kevmoorewrites) | 63 comments @Brittany Pulse weapons! No one's going to nay say your weapons for at least 400 years. ;)

In my novel Iconocop, Knox the Iconocop carries the company issued AR-24 along with his eagle-head cane-sword, He is partial to the cane-sword and uses far more often than his gun. His unofficial partner wields a pair of dirks she calls Venus and Serena, and which she oils and hones frequently. The gang chasing Knox (el diablos) use all manner of pistols, while the behemoth Malthus constructs his own hand-held directed-energy-weapon, or DEW.

Not put any futuristic weapons in a novel yet. I must change this.

message 20: by Brian (new)

Brian Basham (brianbasham) | 390 comments I suggest a boobcannon ;)

Nicole Michelle | 450 comments Mod
What exactly would a boobcannon do? lol Maybe distract but I doubt it'd do any damage :p

message 22: by Ron (new)

Ron Scheer | 27 comments THE FORAGER The Forager by Ron Scheer is set thirty years into a future where the economy has collapsed. There is no high tech future only the weapons of old, standard guns (rifles, shotguns, pistols, etc) bows, and, of course, flying fists.

message 23: by Dionne (new)

Dionne | 68 comments My fantasy The Sorceress mainly uses swords, axes and magic for my characters. I got funny one day and equipped my Warrior with a gun, looked terrible in my head. Then it looked funny so I didn't write it in. I was laughing so hard at that point.

Cem Bilici (cembilici) Tattoos powered by turning the shape shifting creatures the Ward's (magical protectors) hunt into ink. Also the Ward's avatars to an extent, giant creatures of their own imagining linked to them that live in a white void and channel their power into a shield over the world.
