Laurel N | 7 comments Hi everyone, I'm looking for recommendations for books similar to the movie Event Horizon (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Event_Ho...).

So far I haven't ran into many books that fit into those science fiction/horror/alternate dimension categories. Overall, I guess I just want to read some scary outer space stories!

Thanks in advance :)

Ali Berk Çetinbudaklar (aliberk) Great title.

I think I was the only one who adores this unique movie. It is a great blend of sci-fi / horror and it's a must sea movie for the fans of both these genres.

As for the question, I was hoping "Leviathan Awakes" was going to turn out to be like E.H. but it has no relevance with that subject (just read book 1).

So I'm also open to you kind recommendations.

Pat (patthebadger) | 50 comments I haven't got around to reading it yet but The Burning Dark sounds like it might fit the profile.

i thought this movie was the best Sci-fi/Horror since Alien but i make the mistake of re-watching it with my pal a few months ago.

Not only has it horribly dated but the plot is so full of holes and it wasnt how either of us remebered it.

it went from a 9/10 down to a very poor 4 or 5/10.

William Galaini (williamgalaini) | 58 comments Yeah, I saw this back in college and while the film had a polished and slick look, I hated the writing in it. It had some great moments (my favorite being one character's realization that a bomb was about to go off in front of his face) but overall I found it a terrible dud.

I mix of religious horror and science fiction is hard. Science fiction demands some level of logic, and the religious horror seemed to circumvent that. Basically, Event Horizon's setting undermine's itself. Despite me not liking that, I still found it an interesting concept.

Actually, check out the movie 'Doom.' Sadly, it isn't a book but it might scratch your itch? The movie is about angel and demons with a science fiction setting that is oddly.... Calvinist?

I actually enjoyed Doom quite a bit as an action movie. Event Horizon scared the crap out of me, but then again I'm pretty sensitive to horror lol.

I loved Event Horizon. When I first watched it as a kid it did nothing but terrify me, but after re-watching it a few months ago I was able to appreciate the storyline and acting. Leviathan Wakes sounds like a good book though, will add that to my "to read" shelf.

Ali Berk Çetinbudaklar (aliberk) Just FYI, it's been stated that Leviathan Wakes will be on tv as a serie next year.

William Galaini (williamgalaini) | 58 comments Laurel: Movies that scare me aren't the horror kind, per se. We Need to Talk About Kevin terrified me.

Paolo (ppiazzesi) | 74 comments Blindsight. Not for everyone, there is a lot of technical and science stuff that makes it hard to follow, and all the characters and society itself are very different from what we would consider to be normal. However it is excellent, and probably the scariest book I have ever read. Not because of the plot or anything that happens, but the ideas this book explores are truly terrifying.

message 13: by Michele (new)

Michele Blindsight is probably my favorite Sci Fi book so far. It is a very hard-sci-fi book and a great artistic achievement.

This sounds right up my alley. I've been reading some light books, so something more complex would be a nice change. Thanks for the suggestion!

I believe there is as a mythical "director's cut" of Event Horizon. Minutes of material were cut before it hit the cinema.
For a book similar, why not try "Galactic Lebensraum"."

I could barely handle the edited version, can't imagine how scary the director's cut would be lol. Galactic Lebensraum sounds interesting, nazis in space.

Thanks for the suggestion. Added it to my "to read" list :)

Greg Strandberg (gregstrandberg) | 0 comments I'd try out Rendezvous with Rama...it won the Hugo and Nebula in '72 or '73.

Rendezvous with Rama (Rama, #1) by Arthur C. Clarke Rendezvous with Rama

John G. I agree, Rendezous with Rama is excellent. What are sequels like?

I liked them, although many don't like Gentry Lee's contributions. I thought Garden of Rama, the third book, was the best in the series.

Sebastien | 2 comments You should try the DeadnSpace series of videogames, it will suit your quest ! No book come to my mind unfortunatelly

message 21: by Sebastien (new)

Sebastien | 2 comments actually, there is probably a serie of dead space books, not grand litterature, but good universe and storyline
