Belle was, and still is, known for her remarkable physical strength. I was tickled by how the book fits the monthly tag, when the title popped up on my radar, recommended for me by Amazon (I have no idea why.)

3. The Bone People, by Keri Hulme (have read, need to review)

January
CHALLENGE: Tribute to Linda (Ladyslott)
- Epitaph, by Mary Doria Russell (have read, need to write review)
February
CHALLENGE: Read one of the 10 books on your Goodreads TBR that have been there the longest
- A Book of Silence, by Sara Maitland (have read, need to write review)
March
CHALLENGE: Read all 3 tags that were voted on for the monthly tag - classics, autobiography, illustrated
- Dadland, by Keggie Carew, technically works for two of them, autobiography and illustrated. Although I'd consirder it more of a biography, it is shelved as autobiography and does definitely have autobiographical aspects. And the illustrations are mostly photographs, with a few maps, hand-drawn diagrams, photos of handwritten diary pages and memos. I guess that counts as illustrated, although it isn't artwork.
(have read, need to write a review.)
- Great Expectations, by Charles Dickens. Classics, illustrated. (have read, need to write a review)
April
CHALLENGE: Send Nicole R a list of 10 titles from my TRB to have the randomizer choose one.
May
CHALLENGE: Read one book from the Man Booker short lists from the past 10 years
- The Testament of Mary, by Colm Toibin (have read, need to review)t
June
CHALLENGE: Pick a year within the last 10 years that was special to you, and read a book that represents it.
Year: 2012
Special because: I fulfilled a lifelong (over 47 years) dream to move away from the aridity and blistering heat of my native Phoenix to a remote cabin in the woods in a cool, rainy place, preferably in the Olympic Rain Forest. I'm still living the dream and loving it!
- Lady on the Beach, by Nora Berg: A memoir by a woman who also moved from a big city to a beach near my home in 1940 and lived there with her husband almost completely self-sufficiently. (Have read, need to write a review)
July
CHALLENGE: Buddy read
November
CHALLENGE: Answer 10 Questions from Nicole's "Getting to Know You" list
1. If you had to change your name, what would you change it to?
Aldawen Ërulassé Thaloniel
Because that is my actual full name, translated into Tolkein's Elvish!
I did the translation myself. It took about 18 months to do all the research. First I had to figure out what my names meant in English, which is:
"Laurel (bay leaf) tree"
"Her father's joy"
"Daughter of the strong one".
Then I had to figure out how to say those in Elvish, then how to write it in the Elvish alphabet.
Then I wrote it out in calligraphy (I studied calligraphy for several years from a woman who used to be the Queen of England's official calligrapher.) That was the easy part. It took only 8 hours.
Then I took my artwork to a tattoo artist who specializes in lettering, and he traced it to create a beautiful multi-colored anklet tattoo.
There is also a second line of my tattoo that says (in Elvish) "May the peace of the Valar protect me." I did that translation and calligraphy as well. But it isn't my original quote. I don't know the author, it isn't Tolkein, and was unattributed. The Valar are the Angel-like spirit beings of Middle Earth.
I thought I would never get a tattoo, because I'd get tired of looking at the same thing for the rest of my life. But when I had this idea, I knew I wanted it to be part of me forever. Because I've been a huge fan of LotR for over 50 years, so I knew that was the one thing I'd never get tired of!
Wow, only one question, and you know a lot about me already!

2. What song have you completely memorized?
Landslide, by Fleetwood Mac. Including a challenging piano accompaniment that closely replicates Buckingham's guitar work.
3. What job would you be terrible at?
Attorney. I'm too shy, polite, and unassertive. I have a minor physical disability that makes me incapable of speaking loudly. And I hate dealing with paperwork, red tape, and fussy details.
