This is a book about a girl who was born in North Korea and how she escaped to South Korea with her family. The main characters in the book are Eunsun Kim, her sister, and her mother. In the story their goal is to escape North Korea and get to a country that would appreciate them. When Eunsun and her family finally escape North Korea for the first time, to get to China, they were sold to a horrible man and his family who didn't appreciate them and beat them just so that he could have a son. When Eunsun's mother finally had the man's son, they became attached to that boy and didn't leave so that the boy could have a good life. They discovered two men who would get them into South Korea, where they would be free, and spent a couple of months waiting for the Mongolian police to transport them to South Korea. I don't have a favorite character because they all went through basically the same thing and had a great life in South Korea in the end of the story.
I think many people have gone through similar struggles in life but i am really lucky and haven't gone through anything like this before. If i was in her position then i would probably be really scared and be paralyzed with fear. I think that if i was Eunsun, i would probably not last that long in the famine.
i liked the book because it had a lot of detail and she explained them really well. My favorite part of the book is when they made it to South Korea and were finally free from North Korea, China, and that horrible man in China because they went through a lot and now we get to know a little more about what living in North Korea is like. My Least favorite part is when they were sold to the farmer man because that man was horrible to the three of them and they had just lost their father to the famine. The author put a lot of detail so that people who escaped from North Korea and people in general could get a better understanding of what its like to live in North Korea now and then, when she lived there. Since the book was translated from Korean, it was a little hard to understand sometimes but other then that it was a really good book.
I would recommend this book to everyone. People who are curious about North Korea and the famine would really like this book because it talks about all of that stuff and the book is based on Eunsun Kim and her family's life, and how hard it was to get out of that awful country.
I read 100% of this book.
