Laura | 1144 comments I’m loving The Perks of Being a Wallflower! I wish I had read it when everyone else did. There’s so much I relate to - the high school of the 90s, the music mentioned (especially the Smiths)! I tend to avoid books when everyone is raving about them. I need to stop doing that!

1- character Veda Odell

5- Character Izzy Wallace
6- Character Steven Mayberry
7- Character Vanessa Van Ross

For second part of the mini challenge this could work for three teams. There is a silhouette of a tree on the cover. Team Triangulum has A Court of Thrones and Roses, and team Saturn has American Gods, both with trees. Or, I can link this one to Tucana's Gone With the Wind again, as again, they both take place in Georgia.

Kate S Hi Team Eris! I want to say thank you to Kirsten for pointing me in the direction of The Language of Flowers. It was a very sweet story. I actually enjoyed the discussions of the different flowers and they're historical meanings. The ideas of alternate (or secret) communication within families and the melding of modern families really resonated with me. Thank you for sharing this title.

message 485: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments Good morning, or whatever time of day it is for you all!

Christina, I have about 50 pages left in Dead Secret, which I will finish this morning. The next book in that series is Dead Past (Diane Fallon Forensic Investigation #4) by Beverly Connor , which I can read this weekend. So, while shuffling books in the challenge, if there is a link to a house on fire, or another "it takes place in Georgia" book, that can work for the challenge too.

I am also listening to The Origin of Species by Charles Darwin at work, and will probably finish that today too. The only link I have found for that is a palm tree, which links with "She Rides Shotgun" from Pyxis, but I will try to find another if we need it.

My book (Guernsey...) is complete, I updated the spreadsheet accordingly (around 1:30am my time this morning). Since it sounds like we will having everything covered by the books others are currently reading I don't think I'll start a new book until March. In the meantime I will see about either knocking off some of my "currently reading" books from pre-Uno or read more of Lament (the book I started for Uno but put on hold for March).

Jenny | 2346 comments I have a spreadsheet question. I was looking at ours, and there are a few books that are on the list more than once, not as WD4 or wild cards. I don't understand why. Are they put there as place holders? do we have a lot more to read in order to finish all of the hands? I did look at the instructions again, and this duplicate book thing wasn't covered.

Thanks.

message 492: by Laura (last edited Feb 23, 2018 02:21PM) (new)

Laura | 1144 comments Jenny - Are they Draw 2 cards? If so, the title would appear in a hand 3 times: once to signify it is a D2 card, and twice for both cards.

message 493: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments In hand two, The Handmaids Tale is listed under 2, draw2, and red1.
In hand three, The Man Who Was Thursday is listed under 0, draw two and 5. In hand four, Death Around the Bend is listed under draw 2, 4 and 8.How does that work?

message 494: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments Sorry,
I thought it just meant that you could double a book.

Kirsten (kielianne) | 265 comments Jenny wrote: "I have a spreadsheet question. I was looking at ours, and there are a few books that are on the list more than once, not as WD4 or wild cards. I don't understand why. Are they put there as place ho..."

There are Draw 2 cards (as Laura mentioned) which allow us to "Use the same book for two cards in this hand (and get points for both cards)". Where we have covered those cards a hand will essentially have three entries for 1 book (the draw 2 card and then the two cards in the hand we are applying that draw 2 card to). These aren't just place holders they are legitimate plays.

However if you do come across a book that is in more than one hand or is duplicated in a single hand but there is no "draw 2" card in the same hand it is being used for, let us know! That could be a case where us captains were over zealous when entering books and didn't realize another captain already put it in.

message 496: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments So do we really need only 4 more books?

Also, If we as a team finish all of the hands, do we get more hands? or, do we roll over books to the next month?

message 497: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kielianne) | 265 comments Jenny wrote: "So do we really need only 4 more books?

Also, If we as a team finish all of the hands, do we get more hands? or, do we roll over books to the next month?"

Yes we really just need 4 more.
No we don't get any new hands (until March 1st to begin the new month). Books that are completed in Feb in excess unfortunately don't get rolled over they just get lost in the black hole of Feb. However if a book is started in Feb but we don't finish it until March it can be used on March's cards.

message 498: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments Cool. Thanks. I will definitely finish two of the books I am reading before March 1st., and perhaps a third. I will check to see if they match what we need.

Great! Also just adding in Gingerbread (of Laura's) now so we really only need 3 books total! Wow. Also remember nothing is set in stone so we can shuffle books around in order for nearly any book to fit into our cards.
