Christina (chrissy__) | 1241 comments I just deleted Dima's Sinful Empire from our February hand 5 + the Feb Mini sheet. I doubt she'll see/check our messages, therefore won't put the book onto her uno shelf, and I was worried we might forget that we need a backup for this one, so I just deleted it (sorry).
I'm sure there'll be another book to cover Dima's, especially since Jenny apparently keeps reading and reading and reading haha! (and Nikki & Daniela will finish their mini challenge books as well which aren't in our normal uno cards yet) :)

EDIT: putting Marie's book into Dima's spot in our feb sheet ;)

The Origin of Species by Charles Darwin
The Origin of Species by Charles Darwin

Finished Feb. 23.

Works for

0- stand alone
1- title
2- title

Works for 2nd challenge-
Pyxis- She Rides Shotgun (palm tree on cover).
That's all I have found so far, but I will look for another connection this weekend.

message 503: by Laura (new)

Laura | 1144 comments Christina - could we use Marie's book to link kto Milky Way for Part 2 because
In the Woods (Dublin Murder Squad, #1) by Tana French
In the Woods
also has a detective as a main character?

That would cover my Milky Way spot and I could slow down and keep my book for March. Especially since is doesn't sound like we need my book for the regular Uno hands either with Jenny finishing two more?

message 504: by Christina (new)

Christina (chrissy__) | 1241 comments Marie's book already is linked to Milky Way ;)
Now that Jenny finished her book, we will move your (Laura's) Macaron (I think?) book to Milky Way and put Jenny's book into Pyxis & then we got everything covered for the mini challenge :)))

(I'm on my phone rn so one of us will do that tomorrow :))

I can do that, Christina. (once I figure out what you are talking about, hah)

message 507: by Kirsten (last edited Feb 23, 2018 07:28PM) (new)

Kirsten (kielianne) | 265 comments Ok all in, so far. Mini challenge will be complete once Daniela finishes her book.

& then with Daniela completing her book that will also complete all our hands for Feb!

Take a deep breath and maybe even a week reading break, all! ;) Any additional books currently being read can be used in March as long as they aren't finished until March begins. ;)

GO TEAM!

message 508: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments Yea us!
Captains, if you go over the books, and we need anything covered, let me know, I would be happy to read something else for the challenge. Until then, time to pick up stuff I started in January!

message 509: by Daniela (new)

Daniela Zekotic | 923 comments I finished my book last night, our spreadsheet is completely full :)
I'll go over it in the afternoon, but so far it should be all good.

I'll take these 4 days to finish my book I started before the challenge. Make sure if you're already reading for March, that the finish date has to be 1st of March otherwise they don't count. So take a break or finish your books you read before the challenge :) I think March will have a hand more to fill

Laura | 1144 comments I just checked the standings and we are currently in first place!!!

It may not last, but at least we were there at some point!

Christina (chrissy__) | 1241 comments Laura wrote: "I just checked the standings and we are currently in first place!!!

I've just checked the standings as well haha! :) most teams more or less have finished their February cards, but still have some spots in the Mini challenge to fill, so I doubt we'll stay in first place. that's not our fault though - that's just how the cards were dealt. I for one think we did an amazing job! :)

Question: has everybody made sure their books are long enough?

message 514: by Laura (new)

Laura | 1144 comments 100 pages, right?

I checked mine.

message 515: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kielianne) | 265 comments Laura wrote: "100 pages, right?

Yup, well at least 101 pages. ;) "Books must be more than 100 pages in length and Children's books, Graphic Novels, Cook Books, Plays and Poetry books can not be used unless by word count they can be verified as more than 25,000 words using arbookfind.com"

message 516: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments All of mine were longer than 100 pages, or over 4 hours for audiobooks.

message 517: by Nikki ~ The Nocturnal Bookworm (last edited Feb 24, 2018 09:44AM) (new)

Nikki ~ The Nocturnal Bookworm (nyxreadsstuff) Yup I checked mine, had to go to the amazon page for one of them lol. For some reason Goodreads didn’t have a pagecount on any editions, but I had bought the kindle version so I just went back to the store page and checked the page count listed there.

message 518: by Marie (UK) (new)

Marie (UK) (mazza1) | 1155 comments all mine were long enough don't think i have read anything that i haven't also used for cutthroat and their minimum page length is 160.
We have done brilliantly

message 519: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kielianne) | 265 comments Thanks for checking, all! :)

message 520: by Laura (new)

Laura | 1144 comments I see the March hands are up!
Here are our 11 color cards:
4 Yellow
3 Blue
1 Red
7 Red
4 Blue
9 Red
1 Blue
7 Yellow
3 Wild Draw 4 cards

We also have 9 Reverse cards

I'm going to check my books for color cards and reverses now.

message 521: by Laura (new)

Laura | 1144 comments I can cover any or all of the following:
1 Red
4 Blue
7 Yellow
3 Blue
9 Red
(Note to self: all on KU)

1 Reverse (Lady Hardcastle - Marie)

message 522: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments New cards!

I can cover several colored cards. The ones I have found so far are...

3 blue
1 red
7 red
4 blue
1 blue- Outlander could also be a reverse card.

I have more to search, and I am not claiming all of them. I am, however, almost done reading Heaven on Earth, by Michael Shermer, which I have been putting off finishing until March. I need to double check, but it should work for 3 blue.
There are a couple that I need to check the percentage on when I am at my computer tomorrow. Always on the hunt for yellow cards too.

I suggested this one before, and I don't remember who professed an interest, but The Female of the Species is an incredible book, and it would work for 4 yellow, and reverse. Just a tbought.

message 523: by Christina (new)

Christina (chrissy__) | 1241 comments I'll copy and update the chart for our March hands in a bit :)

Thanks for letting us know they're online btw, last time I checked they weren't yet.

The chart in our March spreadsheet is up and running - if you spot any mistakes or errors at any time, please let me know.
We have to read 98 books in total, 13 more than in Feb! (Draw 2s are already factored in)

I'll start the month with Call Me by Your Name (which covers 1 Blue) so I can watch the movie afterwards, but before the Oscars! so I'll be on some sort of a time limit here haha!

message 525: by Daniela (new)

Daniela Zekotic | 923 comments I'll check my books once I get home, but I have 3 blue ones laying around I want to read :) but I can always take them over to April

Daniela Zekotic | 923 comments How was everyone's weekend? :)

message 527: by Daniela (new)

Daniela Zekotic | 923 comments I can cover 2 coloured cards so far:
1 or 3 Blue
7 Red

message 528: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments I checked the color thingy, and Heavens on Earth The Scientific Search for the Afterlife, Immortality, and Utopia by Michael Shermer
works for blue 3 (title), so as I am almost done with it, I will wait and finish it in March for the challenge.

message 529: by Laura (new)

Laura | 1144 comments 13 more books! That’s a lot!

message 530: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments Laura wrote: "13 more books! That’s a lot!"

We can totally do it. I already have three books that I keep switching between to keep from finishing before March 1. Plus I started another on audio that I should finish on Thursday or Friday, so we will start the month with a bang. I am probably not alone in this either.

message 531: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments Since this is my first time doing a challenge, I don't know this... will there be another mini challenge this month? Any clue what it would be?

message 532: by Christina (new)

Christina (chrissy__) | 1241 comments Jenny wrote: "Since this is my first time doing a challenge, I don't know this... will there be another mini challenge this month? Any clue what it would be?"

there's usually a mini challenge each month, yes. I remember e.g. an Easter and an ESC one, but 1, Easter is super early in April and 2, ESC always is in May. so no idea.....

message 533: by Laura (new)

Laura | 1144 comments Jenny - That will be a great start! And you’re right, because I have 3 I will finish pretty early on in March.

Yes, we will get an additional hand each month. Our count is also affected by the number of Draw 2s. And yes, we will get a new mini-challenge each month as well! In the past we’ve had spring themes, Eurovision Awards, hmmm... I can’t the others besides Valentines...

Eurovision is a "song contest" haha, not awards x)

I just checked spreadsheets from the previous years, and what stood out to me were scavenger hunts. I'm pretty sure we'll get one of those, but no idea what the theme could be... and I remember the Bingo mini challenge confused me to no end! (but I think I got it now, in case we should get one ;))

message 535: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments Cool, thanks guys.
Easter theme, hmmm. How many books do I own with bunnies on the cover?

message 536: by Daniela (new)

Daniela Zekotic | 923 comments I started 3 different books as well, so hopefully I'll get them done by the end of the week to start off the challenge lol

message 537: by Marie (UK) (new)

Marie (UK) (mazza1) | 1155 comments I am a little limited this month - i will read and cover cards but i had a cataract op yesterday and at the moment neither ! or my husband can drive (he had knee replacement 5 weeks ago) as our nearest library is 3 miles away- my usual one even further i can only read what i have to hand. So far not found any colour matches but will keep looking

message 538: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments Marie,
I hope your surgery went well. I can't speak for the team, but my feeling is that we've got your back this month. Don't worry about color card books, it looks like we have found possibilities for a lot of them already. Just get better.

message 539: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments Question for the captains-
If I am reading a non-fiction book, that doesn't have "characters", can people mentioned in the book count as such? For example, I just started a book on physics, and there are scientists named and written about in it, so would they count as characters for the Uno cards?

message 540: by Christina (new)

Christina (chrissy__) | 1241 comments Unfortunately not, Jenny. You can check the FAQs in the Question thread to find out why (can't link or copy anything as I'm on my phone right now).

Marie, I hope your surgery went well! If I remember correctly you have KU or so anyway, so I'm sure you'll find lots of books to read nevertheless ;)

I will find books and i will definitely be reading or listening

message 542: by Daniela (new)

Daniela Zekotic | 923 comments A new month has begun - which means we can finally read for the challenge again :)

Have a look out for books that fit card 4 - we've got 11 of them this month! And if you start a coloured book let us know so we can keep track of how many we still need and what other members should look out for :) other than that, just read whatever flows your boat ;)

I just finished my first audio book for this month and hopefully will finish my other book by next week
