message 803: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments For anyone who is interested, this last book that I posted- Tam Lin, is my favorite book of all time. It is part of Terry Windling's Fairy Tale series from the nineties that also has brilliant books by Jane Yolen (based on sleeping beauty), Steven Brust (based on a Hungarian folktale), and Charles de Lint (based on Jack and the beanstalk), among others.

Tam Lin is based on a Scottish folk ballad, with a girl saving a boy from faery. This version takes place in a liberal arts college in Minnesota in the seventies. If you went to a small college, or wanted to, this will enchant you.

Anyway, that is my unasked for recommendation. I love this book so much, I want everyone to read it. I'm sure we all have books like that.

Hey Jenny - I love and recommend Tam Lin by Pamela Dean all the time too. I thought the other Fairy Tale books were okay to good, but Tam Lin was fantastic. Might have to do a reread sooner rather than later. :D

My other favourite 90s fantasy novel is Gossamer Axe by Gael Baudino by Gael Baudino. Ever read that one?

Jenny | 2346 comments Captains, I have a weird one. The book I am reading right now has characters named Mrs. P-----, and Mr. D-----, for example. There is only one character with a full name, and he is the only non-human character so far. But, will Mrs. P---- work for our purposes?

(I always find stuff like this distracting. It takes me right out of the story and into questioning why the author chose to do it).

It's funny, as much as I loved Tam Lin, I have never read another Pamela Dean book in my life. I'm going to rectify that ASAP. :)

Mrs. P----- should work since Mrs. P works as a nickname as well, and so do "normal" names starting with P. It still is her name, no matter how it's "written", if that makes any sense ;)

I do have a copy of this book, and it is a yellow gold. But, I am crying foul if it doesn't work for a yellow card. We can't follow the tineye ruling for some books and not others. I set aside The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead
to read later because tineye lists it as brown, even though it is clearly a shade of red. I want a rule that is consistent please.

Jenny | 2346 comments So. My last question on this topic is this- Is it the metallic finish that is screwing things up for the gold vs yellow question? Navy and robins egg are both blue, the same as goldenrod and canary are both yellow. If it is the metallic finish, then the book I am reading right now won't work for blue, as it is a metallic blue. The Eye of Minds (The Mortality Doctrine, #1) by James Dashner
I loved rereading The Moral Landscape anyway, but I did read it with this challenge in mind. And it would be lovely if the one I am reading now would work for a color card. I guess I would just like some consistency. Perhaps a rule tweak for the next time this game is played.
