Laura | 1144 comments I think we could claim, or plan, the color books now since those are the most difficult. And maybe the Reverses.

Most of the others will fall into place naturally as we read and report all possible cards a book fulfills. Towards the end of the month, the captains may ask for something more specific if something is missing.

That’s been my experience in the previous years of Uno. What do others think? What was your experience?

message 102: by Christina (new)

Christina (chrissy__) | 1241 comments Marie (UK) wrote: "are we claiming books to read ready for the start or waiting until the 1st?"

just like Laura already said (thanks again!), there's no claiming 'normal' cards since most books usually fit more cards.
however, since the coloured cards are harder to fill, you can claim those. please let us know everyone which books you can and will read for those :)

unfortunately Hitch-22 A Memoir by Christopher Hitchens won't work for 2 Yellow since the number in the title is 22, and not 2. so we'll definitely need at least one more book that will fit 2 Yellow, for example.

I took part in the uno challenge the past 2 years already and in both my previous teams we did it this way too. it's a lot less restrictive but still motivates me to read more. that's what I love so much about this team challenge! :)

message 103: by Marie (UK) (new)

Marie (UK) (mazza1) | 1155 comments i will start with
2 yellow The Time of My Life by Cecelia Ahern

message 104: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments If we need a yellow 2 book, and my Hitch 22 won't work, then I suggest The Female of the SpeciesThe Female of the Species. Yellow cover, title begins with T. I'm happy to reread this, but if someone else is interested, it could work for a reverse card as well. Really good book.
Just a thought.

message 105: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments The Female of the Species by Mindy McGinnis
I meant to add the cover.

message 106: by Laura (new)

Laura | 1144 comments I'm going to start tomorrow with 1 Red in our second hand.
The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood

And since we have 2 Draw 2s in that hand (ugh), we could also use that for for the 2 card if it works out.

I'll see where we after that with the colors and can help fill in.

Thanks for the book suggestion, Jenny!

Can't wait to start!

message 107: by Christina (new)

Christina (chrissy__) | 1241 comments Since the challenge starts in less than 24 hours, we'd strongly urge you to please keep up with previously posted messages. of course you don't have to check in with us every day, but it would be great to know that you still catch up on 'old' posts that might be important too :)

message 108: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments Does deep midnight blue count as blue for this challenge? I am thinking of reading The Quantum Universe (And Why Anything That Can Happen, Does) by Brian Cox
For a blue 4 book, but I haven't figured out how to use that color tool referenced in a former post.
Looking forward to starting tomorrow's challenge!

According to the colour extraction (on TinEye Labs) it is 79% Violet. So sadly can't be used for a coloured card

message 110: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kielianne) | 265 comments We're getting close! Y'all excited?!

When I get off work today (in about an 1hr), I'll have a good look at my bookshelves and see what I want to start with, as I haven't decided yet.

message 111: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments Thanks for checking for me on the physics book, but I disagree with that tool. I work with color for a living, and that book is not violet. It is a deep navy blue. But, I will not use it for a colored card. On to the next one...

message 112: by Daniela (new)

Daniela Zekotic | 923 comments So excited for it to start! If I get up early (for once) I can start in the morning.

Just a reminder, you can read all the rules and related stuff in the comments on the first page. And as Christina said, just check through the old messages from time to time to see if you missed something important. Most importantly: have fun and read amazing books :D

message 113: by Daniela (new)

Daniela Zekotic | 923 comments I'll check with the people who are running uno, but they are using this tool for colour checking

message 114: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments Don't worry about it Daniela, I have many other books that won't stir a color controversy.

message 115: by Laura (new)

Laura | 1144 comments As far as that violet color, the captains’ group has approved other iffy colors and/or percentages this year. Maybe we could check with them. If they make exceptions for others, they may for us too.

message 116: by Daniela (new)

Daniela Zekotic | 923 comments I asked anyway, you never know.

However with percentages they are quite strict, has to be over 50%. They wouldn't let me use a book for colour red as it has only 47%

message 117: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments I will preface this comment with "I am going to read it anyway", but I just reread the instructions, and for a 2 card, it says...

"- has a 2 or Two in the title"

So, the Hitch 22 book does have a 2 in the title. It doesn't begin with 2, but it does have a 2. So why wouldn't this work for a yellow 2 card? I am not trying to be a pain in the ass, I am just trying to understand the parameters.

message 118: by Laura (last edited Jan 31, 2018 03:35PM) (new)

Laura | 1144 comments Wait, I'm sorry, you couldn't get approval for a 47% red book, but Team Sculptor got this cover approved?

The Curse of Tenth Grave (Charley Davidson, #10) by Darynda Jones

What am I missing? The Tine Eye for the above doesn't go much more than 40%, with or without the background. I'm confused why that would get approval, but 47% wouldn't. Can someone explain?

message 119: by Laura (last edited Jan 31, 2018 03:32PM) (new)

Laura | 1144 comments Jenny, the Hitch 22 book would work 3 Yellow because the title starts with an H, and that is the 3 card. It is determined by the first letter of the title (articles like A, An, or The may be used or ignored), or a book's number in a series.

I only put those words in bold so they stand out, not to imply an attitude. :)

message 120: by Daniela (new)

Daniela Zekotic | 923 comments It might be because the yellow book just looks over 50% yellow, and my red doesn't so they went by the count. who knows

message 121: by Christina (new)

Christina (chrissy__) | 1241 comments I am OBSESSED with The Greatest Showman omg!! Has anybody else seen it?

7 more hours to go! And tomorrow I'll be on my laptop as well hopefully, so it'll be easier for me to get into conversations /replies.

message 122: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments Seriously, the movie is good? I was debating whether to see it or The Post this weekend.

message 123: by Christina (new)

Christina (chrissy__) | 1241 comments If you like musicals /movies with lots of music in them you'll definitely enjoy it! The soundtrack is so amazing!!

///

The challenge has officially started! Happy reading!

message 124: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kielianne) | 265 comments Happy Reading all!

I saw The Post & enjoyed it (usually do with anything involving Meryl Streep) but I felt I was missing somethings by not knowing enough American history.

Haven't seen The Greatest Showman but I've heard some were surprised it was a musical as the previews (at least the ones I've seen) don't really portray that.

message 125: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments Hey guys-
Are we supposed to post what we started reading here today? If so, I started Bonfire by Krysten Ritter in hardcover, and Extracted (Extracted Trilogy #1) by R.R. Haywood on audible. I usually have several books going at once- one at work, one or more at home, and an audiobook, so I will probably add another one or two in the next couple of days. I didn't quite finish everything I was reading before the game started, so...

message 126: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kielianne) | 265 comments Hey, enjoy your books! Letting us know what your are reading is great to keep the team involved and hopefully motivated to read too (or share their experience if someone else is starting a book their have read). I'm checking with the other captains on how we want to work our tracking sheet (e.g. adding started books as members mention them or waiting until a book is completed to add it to the tracking sheet). Either way, it will be most important to let us know (with the format posted here on the first page) what books you have completed within each month so we know what we have to work with.

message 127: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kielianne) | 265 comments That being said I started Lament (Books of Faerie, #1) by Maggie Stiefvater this morning and hope as I get further into it it'll apply to more cards than the cover tells me (essentially 1st in series, & S - author).

message 128: by Daniela (new)

Daniela Zekotic | 923 comments Post once you finished the book :) I mean you can always tell us about what you're reading, this group is to talk to each other :D

you are very welcome to share what you're reading, along with how you're going and thoughts if you like, as this would definitely spark conversation and keep everyone motivated :)
EDIT: hold on a second- I didn't know Krysten Ritter was writing as well?? ok, definitely let me know what you think of her book please!!

Congrats Marie on finishing your (and our) first book! :) (I don't know how important this is, but can you please set the exact date for your read date as it only says February 2018? thank you)

if everything goes well I'll finish Wonder tomorrow night, but won't have much time to get some reading done on the weekend unfortunately. Wonder, however, is such a quick read, and I can't wait to watch the movie next week!

message 133: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kielianne) | 265 comments I enjoyed both Wonder the book, & Wonder the movie! :)

message 134: by Daniela (new)

Daniela Zekotic | 923 comments Well done on that first book Marie :D

I'm halfway through my first read, might be able to finish it until tonight.

I meant to add the cover."

This sounds interesting! I'll be adding it to my list in case no one is covering the yellow card :)

message 136: by Daniela (new)

Daniela Zekotic | 923 comments So far it already looks quite good regarding our coloured cards! (If I can go by the planned books I know about)

Basically if those books are read we are only missing:
1 Wild draw 4
3 Red
2x 2Yellow

I've stalked a bit through last years uno spreadsheets for book inspiration and will leave a couple suggestions we can come back to (none of these books are over 300 pages)

How to Train Your Dragon by Cressida Cowell
A Room of One's Own by Virginia Woolf
Pretty Little Liars (Pretty Little Liars, #1) by Sara Shepard
To Travel Hopelessly by English Teacher X
The Uncommon Reader by Alan Bennett
The Gift by Danielle Steel
From Doon With Death (Inspector Wexford, #1) by Ruth Rendell

There are loads more, but I think it's enough for now. The month only just started after all, so we still have enough time :) Just wanted to give everyone a little inspiration

the date read is for today I added it to my TBR in January but that should not affect the challenge i will be reading books that have been on my shelves for months if not years

does it work for other cards as well? don't forget those since we could still need them for e.g. Draw 2s :) why did you give the book only 1 star btw, what made you dislike it?

it sucks that Date added is so easy to see, but Date started needs some adjusting in the settings... thankfully it's just a few clicks though :)

Jenny | 2346 comments Christina, yes I really liked it. She can write, and act. Sense me giving off admiration vibes tinged with jealousy. Maybe she can't sing, though. Tee hee. I posted a review if you are interested.

Marie, I think if you find an audible book that is about the same length, you can make a guess at the number of pages. But you probably thought of that already. I don't know how that fits into the rules.
