Laura | 1144 comments I usually use Wikipedia, they have a Characters section for most books. Or books.google.com has a frequently used words and phrases at the bottom of each book page and you can find characters there.

That’s the author of I Know What You Did Last Summer, right? She has a nonfiction book I’ve wanted to read about her daughter’s murder, but I haven’t been able to do it yet, too real.

I thought of this while I was listening to my last audiobook but luckily also had a physical copy I could refer to. Of hand I don't know of anything sites that are character list specific but I've sometimes had some luck with https://books.google.ca/ or Amazon or some other bookshop website that give samples of the book (usually only if it is also in e-book format). Sometimes that way you can skim through the preview pages and find how some names are spelt.

Jenny | 2346 comments Thanks guys. I don't know why I never think of wikipedia, and googlebooks.

Laura, yes, same author. I hadn't read anything of hers since I was a kid, and I probably would have really liked this one then, but it was a bit too simple and predictable for me as an adult. Oh well.

Jenny | 2346 comments Hi all,
I have a non-Uno question for you all. I keep trying to find new books and authors for my dad, and it is not the easiest thing, so I am asking for recommendations please. He likes westerns and mystery/suspense, from Hillerman to CJ Box, to Lee Child. He doesn't tend to read books by women authors (although I am trying to change that). Do any of you have any brilliant suggestions for me? Thank you in advance.

Harlen coben,
Ian Rankin
he could do worse than try some classics H.G. Wells for example John Buchan

The Axeman's Jazz and The Alienist are two of my favourite reads

tbh all of my favourite mystery books that I read in the last couple of years were written by female authors (and as it turns out I mainly own books by women!!)

The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins The Woman in Cabin 10 by Ruth Ware Close to Home (DI Adam Fawley, #1) by Cara Hunter The Sinner by Petra Hammesfahr The Surgeon (Rizzoli & Isles, #1) by Tess Gerritsen

Yeah the default is this one: The Horologicon A Day's Jaunt Through the Lost Words of the English Language by Mark Forsyth

message 265: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments The edition I listened to showed the yellow cover on Audible. I did just order a paperback copy which I think is blue, but that is not the one I read. Yet. I will be rereading this someday soon, it is so good, and I need a reference copy. Book addicts. We are un-save-able.

Yes, yes, you have guessed it already - the recommendations were not only for our pleasure but there was something more to it ;-)

Since some of you have already added a few of the recommendations to your TBR shelves, we figured that would be an ideal title for our February Mini Challenge. ;-)

All info for the mini challenge can be found HERE. Have fun!

(Co-)Captains, your spreadsheets will be updated with a new sheet for the mini challenge within the next 24 hours.

For audiobooks in UNO they ask that we use the "default" edition (usually the first edition goodreads lists and is usually a hardcover) to account for things like # of pages in the book, etc. The only deviation from this that I know of is if you are switching back and forth between an audiobook edition and the physical addition (like I did with A Corner of White - listened to the audiobook when my hands were full but then picked up from there with the physical book when I could sit down with it) in which case readers have the option to shelve either the default edition (for the audiobook version) or the exact physical copy they read.

Violet Parker is her name. but they refer to her as spooky parker a few times during the book.
As for the Defiant queen, the main setting is in New Orleans. However, there is a couple of chapters where they go to Irland. So there is a setting in Irland. I'm not sure if you want to use any of that but they didn't have problems with the setting thing in previous years. so I'm not sure why they would have a problem this year.

Jenny | 2346 comments Hi guys,
I just looked through the recommendations from the other teams, and there is at least one book in each that I would be happy to try. But, my choices would be Haumea, Betelgeuse, and Neptune.

Haumea has two books I already own and want to read, and they have the Narnia series, which are fast reads and really fun, and The Nothing Girl, which is one of my all time favorites, so I can wholeheartedly recommend it to someone on our team to read.

Betelgeuse seems to have the most diverse choices.

Any way, that's my two cents worth.

message 272: by Daniela (new)

Daniela Zekotic | 923 comments I have a book at home that Team Grus recommended. And there is one book both in Team Haumea and Team Jupiter I want to read.

message 273: by Christina (new)

Christina (chrissy__) | 1241 comments I just bought We Were Liars which was recommended by Team Neptune (yes Daniela, I bought another book after our ways parted) 🙈

Nikki ~ The Nocturnal Bookworm (nyxreadsstuff) These are the teams I have unread books at home that are on their lists:

Team Sculptor - 1
Team Hydrus - 1
Team Pluto - 2
Team Milky Way - 1
Team Neptune - 1
Team Ceres - 1 (it's a big book though 1000 pages)
Team Jupiter - 1 (the same big book as Ceres)

Neptune seems to be a good choice so far. Seems like a few of us have at least one book we can read from their list. I would want to suggest Pluto as well. Both of my books on their list I would be happy to read.

message 275: by Kirsten (last edited Feb 13, 2018 04:37PM) (new)

Kirsten (kielianne) | 265 comments Here's how my unread book collection fit in (including the abilities to read books further in a series mentioned):
Sculptor - none (however 1 book I have been planning to purchase)
Hydrus - 4
Pluto - 3 (at least 2 are pretty chunky)
Grus - 4 (2 more chunkers)
Mercury - 3 (1 chunky)
Venus -1
Milky Way - 1 (thicker)
Neptune - 3
Triangulum - 3
Haumea - 4 (a couple chunks)
Ceres - 6 (at least a couple chuckers as well)
Jupiter - 3
Kuiper - 5 (1-2 big)
Saturn - 6
Betelgeuse - 3
Tuscana -3 (1 chucker)
Pyxis - 4
Carina - 1
Musca - 6 (includes the Song of the Lioness series which are fairly quick to get through)

Laura | 1144 comments OK, here's the breakdown for me:

Neptune -2
Venus - 2
Betelgeuse - 1
Saturn - 2
Mensa - 1
Jupiter - 3
Hydra - 2
Andromeda - 1

message 278: by Christina (last edited Feb 13, 2018 05:01PM) (new)

Christina (chrissy__) | 1241 comments Part 1 will be quickly done anyway I think, but Part 2 is gonna be a lot harder!

two important things I gathered from the captain's group so far:

- a reason as "it's the same book" works, but in theory that's what Part 1 is for and the mods would probably rather not want to see
- "written by the same author" works though (and is an amazing reason imo ;))

message 279: by Laura (last edited Feb 13, 2018 06:29PM) (new)

Laura | 1144 comments I don't think I saw this in the "All About the Mini Challenge" post, and I think I know the answer, but, we don't have to wait for our Part 1 books to be done to move on to Part 2, right?

No we can do both parts at the same time. BUT we are not allowed to use the 3 teams we choose for part 1. We're just discussing which teams are best for part 1 and will post it today. So we can start with the mini challenge

message 281: by Daniela (new)

Daniela Zekotic | 923 comments Ok Team, here are the 3 teams for part 1:
Neptune
Pluto
Musca

We have to read 2 books per team. If you choose to read for part 1 please claim the book here :) also make sure it fits at least 1 card so we can use it for the normal spreadsheet as well :)

you can also start to read for part 2. if any of the rules aren't clear, just ask :)

message 282: by Christina (new)

Christina (chrissy__) | 1241 comments I'll read We Were Liars from Team Neptune ;) (currently on my phone so can't link or use our spreadsheet)

message 283: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments I will start with Nyxia, from Neptune.
Nyxia (The Nyxia Triad, #1) by Scott Reintgen

message 284: by Daniela (new)

Daniela Zekotic | 923 comments I'll have a look tonight if I can get The Butterfly Garden from Team Pluto for part 1 :)

message 285: by Laura (new)

Laura | 1144 comments I don't see anything from Pluto or Musca that I'd like to read. However, if needed, I'll read Wonder again to cover Musca.

I'm going to start on Part 2, reading Lemonade and Lies (Peridale Cafe Mystery #2) by Agatha Frost
Lemonade and Lies
which can cover Part 2 Betelgeuse because that team mentioned a book with flowers on the cover Catching the Wind by Melanie Dobson
Catching the Wind

Can we use a checklist like this to help us keep track? I saw something similar on a couple other threads, and it seems helpful to help us keep track. Maybe one of the captains can keep track? Just a suggestion, but might be easier for all of us to look back at to see what teams are covered.

PART 1 (2 books per team; total of 6 possible books):

Team Musca -
Team Neptune - Christina & Jenny
Team Pluto -

PART 2 (2 books per team; total of 36 possible books)

Andromeda -
Betelgeuse - Laura
Carina -
Ceres -
Grus -
Haumea -
Jupiter -
Hydrus -
Kuiper -
Mensa -
Mercury -
Milky Way -
Pyxis -
Saturn -
Sculptor -
Triangulum -
Tucana -
Venus -
