I can vouch for the wonderfulness of The Street!!!

I always wanted to read The Street. I think I have that book and a copy of The Narrows here as well. Include me in a discussion.

Awesome. That’s two!

Lata | 293 comments Carol, I noticed hoopla has both the ebook and audio versions of The Street. I'd like to participate in the BR, but am so overloaded this month there's no way I can easily squeeze it in.

Lata - I can't fit it in until after the new year, plus it's more than 400 pages, so when we start, I'd like to not have 6 other books going at the same time, and the holidays are the holidays. Are you up for a January read and we'll align on exactly when after 1/1? It would be great if you are.

Kathleen | 105 comments Carol, I've been wanting to read The Street since I first heard of it, probably from you! I would love to take part in this BR after the beginning of the year. I already had it on my list of first books to tackle in 2019.

message 157: by Lata (new)

Lata | 293 comments January’s fantastic, Carol! :)

message 158: by Renee (new)

Renee | 2 comments I just recently added The Street to my TBR list and would love to BR after the beginning of the year as well.

Greetings, Carol...did you have a date set to start The Street? I can join in by the 10th-12th if you’re starting the first of the month. I’m excited about this one.

Carol (carolfromnc) | 567 comments I am good with Thursday, 10 January. (That first week back at work tends to suck all the oxygen from my reading life.)

@Lata, Kathleen, Rosalie, Renee: is the 10th okay? Too late? Thoughts?

The 10th is good with me. I've requested the hard-copy book at my library but I'm pretty far down on a wait list (also I recommended they acquire the ebook, but who knows when that will happen). I may just go ahead and buy a copy.

I think I’m delighted there’s a wait list, but ... sounds good.

Lata | 293 comments January works for me for “Beale Street”. I can probably start the book by the 10th or a little later.

Lata, my message was entirely ambiguous, I know. The start-date question was about Ann Petry’s The Street. Are you up for starting that read on the 10th?

Wow, far down on the wait list for this book!? A 72 year old book. I wonder if this is the effect of the Tayari Jones article?

message 169: by Lata (new)

Lata | 293 comments Carol, I’m good for January and around the 10th for Perry’s The Street.

I hadn't known about the article. That could explain it!

I’m so glad! See you in the discussion thread after the new year!

message 174: by Karen Michele (new)

Karen Michele Burns (klibrary) | 220 comments The Street was a 5 star read for me. I'll stop by the discussion when you get started.

message 175: by PS (new)

PS Is anyone interested in reading If Beale Street Could Talk by James Baldwin sometime in Feb? Sorry if this has already been a group / buddy read.

Phyllis | Mocha Drop (mochadrop) | 215 comments My local club is reading it in Feb (Feb 9 is the meeting date), so I can participate in an online discussion with you. I'm tabling it to read closer to book club time, so I won't start until late Jan/early Feb to keep details fresh in my head.

message 177: by PS (new)

PS Brilliant! I can’t fit it in until end of Jan/early Feb either, so this is perfect.

message 178: by Carol (new)

Carol (carolfromnc) | 567 comments I’m interested joining in February. I’ve wanted to read it for some time.

message 179: by PS (new)

PS Yay Carol!

Ok would you prefer to start on the 1st or the 10th of Feb? I’m leaning towards the 10th but OK with an early start as well.

I am interested in buddy reading "If Beale Street Could Talk" in Feb

The 10th is better for me, but I don’t want to hold you all up if you’re ready sooner.

message 182: by PS (new)

PS Bernie - glad to hear!

I’ve got an exam on the 8th so the 10th is definitely better for me too! Ok, this is great, I’ll set up a discussion thread soon :)

message 183: by Karen Michele (new)

Karen Michele Burns (klibrary) | 220 comments I'd like to join in on Beale Street. I'm going to try to put off seeing the movie until after I've read it. I've read a lot of Baldwin's work over the last few years, but haven't read this one yet. I'm trying to catch up on the latest buddy reads. I've read (and loved) The Street recently, so I just started The Black God's Drums.

Same, I want to read the book before I watch the film. I saw the trailer and it looks so good! Glad to have you on board!

Nadine in California (nadinekc) | 201 comments Anyone want to do a buddy read of Tonic and Balm? 10 of us have won a free copy through this GR group, so the nine of you are likely suspects :) The publication date is Feb 5, so maybe some time in March?

message 186: by Lark (new)

Lark Benobi (larkbenobi) | 349 comments Over in the 'Read and Recommended' thread a few of us are talking about reading We Cast a Shadow together. Should we buddy read it here soon? My only hesitation is it's really new and maybe hard to get at your library and also might work really well as a group read.

Phyllis | Mocha Drop (mochadrop) | 215 comments I read it in January and I'm willing to discuss with this group.

Nadine in California (nadinekc) | 201 comments Once again, my public library has been far speedier than I ever expected, and my hold will arrive today or tomorrow, so I'm in! I thought my problem with brand new books would be getting them too late for discussion, but I'm having the opposite problem!

message 189: by Karen Michele (new)

Karen Michele Burns (klibrary) | 220 comments I am interested and I have holds on both We Cast a Shadow and Invisible Man. I'll just have to see if everything comes in at the right time!

I also read in January and willing to discuss

message 191: by Lark (new)

Lark Benobi (larkbenobi) | 349 comments You know I have been thinking about We Cast a Shadow and I'd prefer myself to wait for a few months and to discuss when it's eligible for a group read and when more people can participate. I'll probably hold off from participating in a buddy read of it, if one opens. There is a lot going on in this book.

Phyllis | Mocha Drop (mochadrop) | 215 comments I really enjoyed We Cast a Shadow!

I just started this one. But I can hold off on any discussions for others to be included.

sylvie (meignansevigny) | 1 comments We Cast a Shadow sounds good to me, say a few months from today ( March 6 '19 ). May - June ?

Nadine in California (nadinekc) | 201 comments A book that's fallen by the wayside is Tonic and Balm - a couple of months ago several of us won an early copy from the publisher. Would any of the lucky winners or others (it was published on Feb 5) like to set a date for discussion? I'm feeling guilty - but also intrigued, the story sounds tempting.

Nadine, glad you brought it up because I was gonna mention it again. Would sometime in April work for you? I’ll need to read it again even though I think I still have my notes.

Any time in April works fine for me. For me, it's short enough to have just a whole book discussion, rather than split it into sections.
