If anyone would like to buddy read either the new book by Catherine Adel West, SAVING RUBY KING or SUGAR by Bernice McFadden, let me know. I read SUGAR years ago and didn’t enjoy it. I got lambasted by friends and wanted to give it another try.

message 254: by Lata (new)

Lata | 293 comments I want to read Saving Ruby King by Catherine Adel West, Columbus. I noticed that hoopla has the audio, so that was how I was going to experience that book.

Phyllis | Mocha Drop (mochadrop) | 215 comments I recently re-read/listened to Sugar for a discussion with the author to celebrate the 20 year publishing anniversary, so I can discuss it.

I enjoyed Praise Song for the Butterflies so am game to try another Bernice L. McFadden.

The library waitlist says I have 5 weeks until I get Saving Ruby King.

So I'm potentially interested in both your suggestions. :-)

Carol (carolfromnc) | 567 comments I’m interested in Sugar any time, possible Saving Ruby King, depending on timing.

Just seeing this, Lata. Don’t know how I missed it. Did you already read it?

I can start Sugar next week. Like Wednesday. Will that work for everyone?

message 260: by Lata (new)

I liked “Praise Song” also but didn’t at all care for SUGAR the first time I read it. However, there’s been so many friends who have read it and speak so highly of it that I’m willing to give it another try. I may feel the same way after reading it and then I may enjoy it on my follow up read. Who knows. But I really want to give it another try.

SUGAR by Bernice McFadden. Can we try a 7/17 start date?
Sugar

SAVING RUBY KING by Caterine Adel West. Can we try a 8/8 start date? (Has nothing to do with my birthday. Honestly.)
Saving Ruby King

Great. I set up a thread for it, Mocha Girl.

I’ll never forget, it was actually your response to my 2* rating ten years ago that prompted me to give this book another try. I felt a little guilty giving it such a low rating. We’ll see how I feel after a re-read.

Phyllis | Mocha Drop (mochadrop) | 215 comments Oh No!!! I feel terrible! I doubt seriously if your rating will change and I feel worse that you're re-reading a book that was so lowly rated - don't waste precious time and energy on a title that you didn't care for - you could devote it to a *new* read!!! I re-read it and my rating dropped - I've grown as a reader in 20 years and she's grown as a writer.

That will work for me.

[book:Saving Ruby King|44131181] is available on Hoopla both as an ebk and an audio book.

I will probably do the audio book.

Hi Kirsten, I just started the first seven pages an hour ago and about to jump back into it now. Part 1 is about 77 pages would you like to discuss after we complete that? Or discuss each chapter after we finish? Whatever you decide is fine with me.

message 274: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn (kathrynlovescorgis) Anybody interested in doing a buddy read for American Sonnets for My Past and Future Assassin? It was mentioned in this thread because it recently won an award. Since poetry can be especially hard to parse, I'd love to have other readers to unpack this with.

I'm so sorry!

message 276: by Karin (new)

Karin I voted for A Girl Is a Body of Water for the August read (lost, of course :) ) but got it from the library because I really want to read it in August anyway.

Would anyone care to join me in a buddy read for this? I could start sooner, but would prefer to wait until closer to August as I have a pile of books and have slowed down a bit with my reading as Covid restrictions are loosening.

message 278: by Wanda (new)

Wanda | 200 comments I'm going to start The Other Black Girl after I finish this book I'm currently reading. Anyone else who is reading or has read it that would like to discuss? The Other Black Girl

message 279: by Lark (new)

Lark Benobi (larkbenobi) | 349 comments Wanda, I'd love to discuss The Other Black Girl. It was a tough read for me and usually that means I haven't given the book the attention it deserves, or that I've gotten cranky because the book doesn't go the way I personally expected it to go.

I plan to finally read more Bernice McFadden in 2022. Anyone interested in a buddy read for any of these:

The Book of Harlan
Glorious
Loving Donovan

Tentatively for mid to late January.

Book: Glorious
Start date: 1/19

How does that sound?

Certainly. You can set the schedule if you like.

message 285: by Lark (new)

Lark Benobi (larkbenobi) | 349 comments I can read it in a few days--no need for a schedule unless others join and want to have one. Great! I like Bernice McFadden as a human being (at least as she presents herself to her readers) and I've been meaning to read Glorious for a long time.

I'm poor, so I'm mostly up for public domain books... Also I like biographies. =P

Yes, “Glorious” didn’t seem to garner the attention like many of her others for some reason but still received some high GR ratings. I’ve only read SUGAR (read twice) & PRAISE SONG FOR THE BUTTERFLIES by her so I have some catching up to do. Hope you’ll be able to join us.

Hi BernieMck - FYI, the 'Newest Literary Fiction' group just started a discussion of this book on Jan 8. Most of us are just starting it, or haven't gotten past the first 300 pages or so. We'd love to have you :)

I’m checking every other day for my library copy to come in. It says “in transit” but that may mean it’s being sent by pony express from some rural county in Georgia. Hopefully soon.
