Wolf (Alpha) | 167 comments What is the spell-out for this one?

message 355: by Nicole (last edited Apr 30, 2018 08:32AM) (new)

Nicole P | 1834 comments I assume it would be the United States of America or Roswell?

message 356: by Wolf (Alpha) (new)

Wolf (Alpha) | 167 comments I can use Hex Hall (Hex Hall, #1) by Rachel Hawkins for this one.
It is set in Vermont somewhere and Rachel Hawkins is an American author.

message 357: by Nicole (new)

Nicole P | 1834 comments I'm game for an American author or setting.

Nicole P | 1834 comments The detour for this round: Read a book where the Author has the same first name as an Academy Award winning actor/actress.

I can put together a list for the last 10 years just for reference?

message 359: by Tahmina (new)

Tahmina (tpopal) Roswell, NM (US)

Roswell is a city in New Mexico. It is the county seat of Chaves County in the southeastern quarter of the state of New Mexico, United States.[2] As of the 2010 census it had a population of 48,411,[3] making it the fifth-largest city in New Mexico. It is a center for irrigated farming, dairying, ranching, manufacturing, distribution, and petroleum production. It is also the home of New Mexico Military Institute (NMMI), founded in 1891. Bitter Lake National Wildlife Refuge is located a few miles northeast of the city on the Pecos River. Bottomless Lakes State Park is located 12 miles (19 km) east of Roswell on US 380.

Roswell is most popularly known for having its name attached to what is now called the Roswell UFO incident, though the crash site of the alleged UFO was some 75 miles (121 km) from Roswell and closer to Corona. The investigation and debris recovery was handled by the local Roswell Army Air Field. Roswell is a popular town for tourists from around the country because of its many alien-themed stores, restaurants, museums, and other attractions, including a McDonald's location built in the form of a flying saucer.

Would you mind doing that? I think it would help.

message 362: by Wolf (Alpha) (new)

Wolf (Alpha) | 167 comments Thanks Tahmina I have always thought that Roswell was awesome. Thanks for the little facts about it.

message 363: by Tahmina (new)

Tahmina (tpopal) So since we are reading an american Author we won't be doing the spell it out.

Detour: Read a book where the Author has the same first name as an Academy Award winning actor/actress

Yes, we can do. The more people who do the detour, the more points we get in addition to completing the task.

message 367: by Tahmina (new)

Tahmina (tpopal) I'll do Red Rising for the American Author. Red Rising (Red Rising, #1) by Pierce Brown

I will wait for Nicole's list before deciding on the book for detour!

Yes. According to the rules it says country or city.

Kavitha Sivakumar | 179 comments Yes to American authors.

Tahmina (tpopal) Nicole wrote: "Tahmina wrote: "And just to clarify so everyone is on the same page can we go for American Authors?"

I'm not sure how to phrase this. Does this mean that we have to pick either country or city as a group and then everyone has to stick to that one?

message 377: by Nicole (new)

Nicole P | 1834 comments Tahmina wrote: "I'm not sure how to phrase this. Does this mean that we have to pick either country or city as a group and then everyone has to stick to that one?"

I checked again:
read books set in that country or by an author of that country

We only use the city if we chose to spell it out.

So individually (since I think we're all in agreement barring a few) we can either read a book set in America or written by an American.

So for example you could read Born in Fire by Nora Roberts. The book is set in Ireland but the author is American, so it would count. Or you can simply read an American author, where the books setting is in the States.

Hope that makes sense :)

Nicole P | 1834 comments Just a random question: for the spell-it-out rounds that we've done. Does every member have to read a letter and if we have leftover letters, then other members read two books? Or is it ok that we have members who haven't taken a letter?

message 390: by Tahmina (new)

Tahmina (tpopal) Nicole wrote: "Just a random question: for the spell-it-out rounds that we've done. Does every member have to read a letter and if we have leftover letters, then other members read two books? Or is it ok that we ..."

I think as long as all the letters are done, one person can read more than one book.

message 391: by Nicole (new)

Nicole P | 1834 comments Tahmina wrote: "I think as long as all the letters are done, one person can read more than one book."

So we can have members who don't read a book for a challenge at all then?

I don't know if I'm articulating my question right.

message 392: by Tahmina (new)

Tahmina (tpopal) yes correct. You can have certain members that don't read at all.

message 393: by Nicole (new)

Nicole P | 1834 comments Tahmina wrote: "yes correct. You can have certain members that don't read at all."

Ok :) So for this particular round we are doing, every single member read a book. Correct?

no. I think for this round we need only about five people to read the book. But we usually make sure that everyone who wants to participate does and then we move on to the next stop.

Nicole P | 1834 comments I went back to the rules...

TASKS
◈ Completing a task will earn the team 10 points AND
◈ If at least 6 members of the team read a book that contributes to the tasks, that is an additional 15 points AND
◈ If ALL team members read a book for the time you are at the stop, that is an additional 10 points

DETOURS
◈ Completing a detour earns the team 25 points AND
◈ If at least 7 members of the team read a book for the detour, that is an additional 15 points AND
◈ If ALL team members read a book for the time you are at the stop, that is an additional 10 points

From this it looks like we need a minimum of 6 members in order for it to be considered complete when we are doing the option of reading a book set in a country or an author from that country. I just wanted to check because I started confusing myself
🙈
