OT: Figure Skating

Totally agree with their decision on the ladies' team, by the way.

I made a point of watching Skate Canada, Canadians, and Worlds. No matter how late, I had to watch before I found out what happened!
As it got harder to find (at least in Canada) the tv stations that aired the competitions, I got away from it. Now I watch so little tv, that I don't want to invest the time, anymore, even if I do know when it's on. Although, for cost, I've also cut back on tv stations that I get, and I get zero sports stations, so unless it airs on one of the "regular" channels, I don't even have the option to watch, anymore, even if I wanted.
Now, what's more exciting... I got to go to Canadians when they were in Calgary in 2000, I think it was. And, I believe Worlds was here in Calgary in 2006, so Mom and I went to that, as well! For both competitions, we were there pretty much from whatever time it started in the mornings and we stayed until late at night when it was over. So, for about a week each time, we spent entire days at the rink. It was so much fun, though!!! We even went to some of the practices. :-)

The Final competition in the US Figure Skating is airing RIGHT NOW on NBC (Sunday, Jan 7, afternoon) ... Free Dance in the Ice Dance competition. Next Sunday, Jan 14 will be the "exhibition' skate - also aired on NBC (4p- 6p ET)
The next competitions will be the European championships, followed by the Four Continents competition at the end of January.
Olympics begin Feb 8 (not sure of the figure skating schedule)
World figure skating competition begins March 21.

I haven’t watched as much since they changed all the scoring. While I know it’s less subjective, I feel like it has also took out some of the suspense.

..."
That was just before I really got "into" watching it. 1984, I believe. I have seen that routine, of course, though.

Eta: Getting the chinese pairs mixed up!
I also enjoy curling. I don't think they aired the "mixed doubles" (which is new to me!!!) gold medal game in prime time, though! Someone I take the bus with in the mornings, got up at 4:00 am to watch, though!

YES. And the North Koreans really did a fine job as well.
Felt bad for the US pairs couple ... I think competing in both the team competition and then the Pair "individual" competition just two nights later was just too taxing for them.

Hilarious!
Also loving Adam Rippon's interviews and comments :)

LOVE Lapinski and Weir's commentary as well. I got hooked on them at the 2014 Olympics ... their commentary ONLY appeared on the NBC sports channel and I thought they did a marvelous job. They've since be elevated and frequently appear on the regular NBC channel as well.

Just brilliant skating, with only one little bobble (hand down on landing his third (of six!!!!) quad.

I'm actually surprised it hasn't been tougher on more of th skaters!

So impressed with Chen tonight! I switched over and watched NBC when CBC once again focused on hockey. I wanted to see the skating! Have to admit, I do miss Kurt Browning's commentary when I'm watching NBC, though. :-)
Ah, as a Canadian, though, I was, of course, hoping Patrick Chan would have a better skate. He is such a beautiful skater and he really was so good at the quads a while back, as well, but I guess it's tougher to keep up with the younger skaters! Glad he got his Olympic gold with the team, though. That was very exciting!

I also am a fan of Patrick's. He really is a beautiful skater and I loved his long program.
Javier Fernandez really did a fine job as well. I would have rated him for the silver, but I'm glad he at least got the bronze.
Looks like Brian Orser is the coach to have!

Yeah, looks like Brian's skaters are doing well this year!

So I got to see the wonderful Chen comeback and Rippon, but not Chan and the winners (same for women and pairs). What is also clear is that no significsnt video clips were released to news organizations and the usual placements of performances on YouTube are quickly repressed. Even the so-called Olympic News channel doesn't note the medaling in fogure skating. Very disappointing how the goal of profits for NBC keeps a lot of the public from experiencing any of the figure skating even after the event is over.

For me, in Canada (luckily I do have NBC as an alternate), CBC has been showing a good portion of the figure skating, but will cut out in favour of hockey or curling. Both of which I also enjoy, but for me figure skating will always take priority! So, I turn it over to NBC in hopes I can see it there. There is another (sports-specific) channel that I think has been carrying the figure skating CBC isn't showing (TSN - The Sports Network), but that is a channel I don't have.

I don't have a problem with NBC making a profit ... they pay bijillions of dollars to the Olympics for the exclusive rights to air the games in the USA. And in the past you could stream the previous days coverage on the internet (because I did) .... but I haven't checked if it can be done now.
We have both NBCSN and regular NBC .. so I just switch back and forth.
Sorry you missed Patrick Chan (and the final six) .... they really were wonderful to watch.

BUT, Canada has the third most medals and apparently is on track to beat 2010 and 2014 medal counts.
NB I live in the States and we have a fun rivalry at my house between the US, Canada and now Norway (my sons likes living in the States best, but loved visiting Norway so is rooting for them).

I only watched the first hour of the ice dancing, but read about this incident online this morning. The poor woman. I'm just glad they still did well in spite of the challenges. And fortunately, I believe the French are a lot less hung up about nudity than Americans (a generalization I'm sure, but we don't have topless beaches), so hopefully it's quickly forgotten!

Ugh. My son has Directv Now (also a streaming service), and he indicated they have the full broadcast . . .so sorry that you don't, Michael. How frustrating.

Hmmmm ... I didn't see this. Though I did watch the live performance, and while I noticed the wardrobe malfunction I didn't see anything revealing. What troopers, though to just continue on and perform as well as they did.
This is actually the second wardrobe malfunction of these games. Another ice dancer - or was it a pairs skater? - had a similar problem earlier. But a lot of ladies will be sewn into their costumes for the final performance!

I agree. They are just making things worse. The dance pairs are moving around so quickly on the ice, that I am guessing some viewers really didn't notice much during the performance.
This year I am much more captivated by the pairs ice skating/dancing, versus the solo skaters. At least there isn't as much focus on how many quads an athlete can do during one program.

I was watching CBC and they certainly didn't make a big deal of it. In fact, I didn't notice it at all, until one of them tugged on her strap at the very end of the program once they finished!
Poor woman... I think the South Korean woman had a similar wardrobe issue in the team competition. Or, so I heard. ETA: I see BC mentioned this, as well.

I did see a story on yahoo this morning with a photo, where it's circled, but blurred out. She was quoted in the story as being very embarrassed about it (or something along those lines).

I DVR it every evening, so I can watch in the morning if I fall asleep.

Have to say that I also really liked the American sibling dance couple. I really liked their short program yesterday, as well. Happy to see them get a bronze.

I love the Shibutanis, of course, but I had to root for Scott and Tessa!

All the channels showing the Olympics last night were showing the ski halfpipe (at least I got to see Canada win another gold), and by the time they cut to skating it was the start of the third group. I had to go to bed soon since I'm working today, so I just saw another Canadian pair (Piper Gilles and Paul... something).
But I got my good news when I woke up this morning so I'm happy for Scott and Tessa :)
Can hardly wait for the Olympics!
