Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) | 8422 comments I am absolutely obsessed with watching the US Figure Skating Championships these last few days. Tonight is the men's final. I missed the ladies' final last night due to a previous engagement, but I DVR'd it and will watch it tomorrow (I already know who won, but I still enjoy watching the performances).

Can hardly wait for the Olympics!

message 2: by Raine (new)

Raine (rainelu) | 268 comments I have been watching them too.....watching them now! The ladies competition was so good......enjoy!!!

message 3: by Book Concierge (new)

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) | 8422 comments OMG - Miner was SOoooo good tonight. It'll be a hard decision for the committee to decide who to send to the Olympics.

Totally agree with their decision on the ladies' team, by the way.

LibraryCin | 11696 comments From high school on through about 20 years later (It's now coming up on 30 years since high school!!!!), I was obsessive about figure skating competitions!

I made a point of watching Skate Canada, Canadians, and Worlds. No matter how late, I had to watch before I found out what happened!

As it got harder to find (at least in Canada) the tv stations that aired the competitions, I got away from it. Now I watch so little tv, that I don't want to invest the time, anymore, even if I do know when it's on. Although, for cost, I've also cut back on tv stations that I get, and I get zero sports stations, so unless it airs on one of the "regular" channels, I don't even have the option to watch, anymore, even if I wanted.

Now, what's more exciting... I got to go to Canadians when they were in Calgary in 2000, I think it was. And, I believe Worlds was here in Calgary in 2006, so Mom and I went to that, as well! For both competitions, we were there pretty much from whatever time it started in the mornings and we stayed until late at night when it was over. So, for about a week each time, we spent entire days at the rink. It was so much fun, though!!! We even went to some of the practices. :-)

The Final competition in the US Figure Skating is airing RIGHT NOW on NBC (Sunday, Jan 7, afternoon) ... Free Dance in the Ice Dance competition. Next Sunday, Jan 14 will be the "exhibition' skate - also aired on NBC (4p- 6p ET)

The next competitions will be the European championships, followed by the Four Continents competition at the end of January.
Olympics begin Feb 8 (not sure of the figure skating schedule)
World figure skating competition begins March 21.

TV schedule for Figure skating compettions

Tessa (FutureAuthor23) | 229 comments I'm an absolute nut about the Olympics, more so the summer Olympics, but I still LOVE watching the ice skating and the luge in the winter Olympics. I watched ice skating this whole past weekend.

message 8: by JoLene (new)

JoLene (trvl2mtns) | 1532 comments I used to watch ice skating all the time, but I have gotten away from it. My favorite is the ice dancing and I still remember Torville & Dean’s Bolero routine (not to date myself ;-)

I haven’t watched as much since they changed all the scoring. While I know it’s less subjective, I feel like it has also took out some of the suspense.

That was just before I really got "into" watching it. 1984, I believe. I have seen that routine, of course, though.

message 10: by Karin (new)

Karin | 9232 comments I'm rooting for Canada in the Olympics. For everything, but especially figure skating because I like it and curling because, as I told my husband, when it comes to curling CANADA RULES ;).

message 11: by Anita (new)

Anita Pomerantz | 9287 comments I'm enjoying the Olympic figure skating! The team competition was fun . . .but have to say I thought the pair from China was really, really incredible last night. Like on another level entirely.

message 12: by Jason (new)

Jason Oliver | 3047 comments I'm a curling fan.

Tessa (FutureAuthor23) | 229 comments Totally agree with you Anita about the China pair last night

message 14: by LibraryCin (last edited Feb 14, 2018 08:35PM) (new)

LibraryCin | 11696 comments Obviously, I was very excited about the team competition! The Chinese pair last night was amazing! I do remember him from years ago. The Canadian announcers said, I think, this is his 5th Olympics with his 3rd partner. I'm pretty sure I only remember his first partner, as I haven't watched for so long now!

Eta: Getting the chinese pairs mixed up!

I also enjoy curling. I don't think they aired the "mixed doubles" (which is new to me!!!) gold medal game in prime time, though! Someone I take the bus with in the mornings, got up at 4:00 am to watch, though!

message 15: by Jason (new)

Jason Oliver | 3047 comments I watched rerun of gold. Hot NBC sports app on roku

message 16: by LibraryCin (new)

LibraryCin | 11696 comments Normally i'd watch cbc, but tonight they are focusing on curling and hockey, so watching nbc. Just finished the chinese long program. Unfortunate... but was also reminded of the north korean team. I loved their program last night, too!

message 17: by LibraryCin (new)

LibraryCin | 11696 comments Ah, so happy for Savchenko! Amazing skate!

Michelle (MichelleBookAddict) (michellebookaddict) | 186 comments I’m a big hockey fan and my mom and I were super excited about the women’s US vs Canada game tonight. Now on to the playoffs.

message 19: by Book Concierge (new)

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) | 8422 comments LibraryCin wrote: "Ah, so happy for Savchenko! Amazing skate!"

YES. And the North Koreans really did a fine job as well.

Felt bad for the US pairs couple ... I think competing in both the team competition and then the Pair "individual" competition just two nights later was just too taxing for them.

message 20: by Joi (new)

Joi (missjoious) | 3970 comments I'm just enjoying Tara Lapinski and Johnny Weir's commentary.
Hilarious!

Also loving Adam Rippon's interviews and comments :)

Tessa (FutureAuthor23) | 229 comments I love them too Joi! I hope they're still commentating together in their 90's! ☺️

message 22: by Book Concierge (new)

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) | 8422 comments I felt so bad for Nathan Chen. Clearly nerve and pressure of OLYMPIC PERFORMANCE got to him. Bravo for Vincent Zhou and Adam Rippon, though! Looking forward to the long program tonight. Maybe Nathan will be able to just "let her rip" since he has no real chance of medalling and the "pressure" is therefore off.

LOVE Lapinski and Weir's commentary as well. I got hooked on them at the 2014 Olympics ... their commentary ONLY appeared on the NBC sports channel and I thought they did a marvelous job. They've since be elevated and frequently appear on the regular NBC channel as well.

message 23: by Book Concierge (last edited Feb 17, 2018 05:19AM) (new)

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) | 8422 comments Go, GO, GO Nathan Chen!

Just brilliant skating, with only one little bobble (hand down on landing his third (of six!!!!) quad.

LibraryCin | 11696 comments Book Concierge wrote: "Felt bad for the US pairs couple ... I think competing in both the team competition and then the Pair "individual" competition just two nights later was just too taxing for them..."

I'm actually surprised it hasn't been tougher on more of th skaters!

So impressed with Chen tonight! I switched over and watched NBC when CBC once again focused on hockey. I wanted to see the skating! Have to admit, I do miss Kurt Browning's commentary when I'm watching NBC, though. :-)

Ah, as a Canadian, though, I was, of course, hoping Patrick Chan would have a better skate. He is such a beautiful skater and he really was so good at the quads a while back, as well, but I guess it's tougher to keep up with the younger skaters! Glad he got his Olympic gold with the team, though. That was very exciting!

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) | 8422 comments LibraryCin wrote: "I was, of course, hoping Patrick Chan would have a better skate. He is such a beautiful skater ..."

I also am a fan of Patrick's. He really is a beautiful skater and I loved his long program.

Javier Fernandez really did a fine job as well. I would have rated him for the silver, but I'm glad he at least got the bronze.

Looks like Brian Orser is the coach to have!

message 27: by LibraryCin (new)

LibraryCin | 11696 comments I was cheering for Javier Fernandez! It's fun to see skaters from countries that aren't usually seen as winter sport countries! I remember being surprised, when I was at world's in 2006, to see skaters from New Zealand, Australia, Spain, Mexico... Usually, they don't rank quite so high, though, so I was rooting for him!

Yeah, looks like Brian's skaters are doing well this year!

message 28: by Michael (new)

Michael (mike999) | 569 comments I was looking forward to Chan. I dumped the cable for internet a la carte. Thought I would be fine with subscribing to Sling, with NBCSN and Olympic Channel. But it covers very little of skating. Their method is to show the first rounds then cut out the last round with the winners in favor of curling and luge.

So I got to see the wonderful Chen comeback and Rippon, but not Chan and the winners (same for women and pairs). What is also clear is that no significsnt video clips were released to news organizations and the usual placements of performances on YouTube are quickly repressed. Even the so-called Olympic News channel doesn't note the medaling in fogure skating. Very disappointing how the goal of profits for NBC keeps a lot of the public from experiencing any of the figure skating even after the event is over.

message 29: by LibraryCin (new)

LibraryCin | 11696 comments Oh, I'm so sorry you missed Chan, Michael. It's too bad because Chan was in the final flight of 6 (though he ended up in 9th place, overall). Oh, and even the winners!? Oh, no!!! :-(

For me, in Canada (luckily I do have NBC as an alternate), CBC has been showing a good portion of the figure skating, but will cut out in favour of hockey or curling. Both of which I also enjoy, but for me figure skating will always take priority! So, I turn it over to NBC in hopes I can see it there. There is another (sports-specific) channel that I think has been carrying the figure skating CBC isn't showing (TSN - The Sports Network), but that is a channel I don't have.

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) | 8422 comments Michael wrote: "how the goal of profits for NBC keeps a lot of the public from experiencing any of the figure skating even after the event is over. .."

I don't have a problem with NBC making a profit ... they pay bijillions of dollars to the Olympics for the exclusive rights to air the games in the USA. And in the past you could stream the previous days coverage on the internet (because I did) .... but I haven't checked if it can be done now.

We have both NBCSN and regular NBC .. so I just switch back and forth.

Sorry you missed Patrick Chan (and the final six) .... they really were wonderful to watch.

message 31: by LibraryCin (new)

LibraryCin | 11696 comments Michael, I don't know if you will be "allowed" to watch this or not, but CBC has posted Patrick Chan's long program to youtube:

message 34: by Karin (new)

Karin | 9232 comments I only cheer for Canada unless there is some fabulous overcoming odds from a small country story. NOT HAPPY with Chan's performance!!!

BUT, Canada has the third most medals and apparently is on track to beat 2010 and 2014 medal counts.

NB I live in the States and we have a fun rivalry at my house between the US, Canada and now Norway (my sons likes living in the States best, but loved visiting Norway so is rooting for them).

Tessa (FutureAuthor23) | 229 comments Ugh. So disgusted that they felt the need to show in. slow. motion. the nipple slip from the France team. I feel so bad for her.

I only watched the first hour of the ice dancing, but read about this incident online this morning. The poor woman. I'm just glad they still did well in spite of the challenges. And fortunately, I believe the French are a lot less hung up about nudity than Americans (a generalization I'm sure, but we don't have topless beaches), so hopefully it's quickly forgotten!

Ugh. My son has Directv Now (also a streaming service), and he indicated they have the full broadcast . . .so sorry that you don't, Michael. How frustrating.

Hmmmm ... I didn't see this. Though I did watch the live performance, and while I noticed the wardrobe malfunction I didn't see anything revealing. What troopers, though to just continue on and perform as well as they did.

This is actually the second wardrobe malfunction of these games. Another ice dancer - or was it a pairs skater? - had a similar problem earlier. But a lot of ladies will be sewn into their costumes for the final performance!

message 39: by [deleted user] (new)

Tessa (FutureAuthor23) wrote: "So disgusted that they felt the need to show in. slow. motion. ....

I agree. They are just making things worse. The dance pairs are moving around so quickly on the ice, that I am guessing some viewers really didn't notice much during the performance.

This year I am much more captivated by the pairs ice skating/dancing, versus the solo skaters. At least there isn't as much focus on how many quads an athlete can do during one program.

LibraryCin | 11696 comments Tessa (FutureAuthor23) wrote: "Ugh. So disgusted that they felt the need to show in. slow. motion. the nipple slip from the France team. I feel so bad for her."

I was watching CBC and they certainly didn't make a big deal of it. In fact, I didn't notice it at all, until one of them tugged on her strap at the very end of the program once they finished!

Poor woman... I think the South Korean woman had a similar wardrobe issue in the team competition. Or, so I heard. ETA: I see BC mentioned this, as well.

Tessa (FutureAuthor23) | 229 comments I thought it was the 3rd wardrobe malfunction now but maybe there was only 2.

Tessa (FutureAuthor23) | 229 comments Oh sorry I should've specified. It wasn't during the live showing that they played her nip slip. It was a recap of the performances later and I don't remember what channel I was watching at that time. Her pic is also all over Twitter. ☹️ Although I do agree that French people are probably a little more relaxed about nudity.

I did see a story on yahoo this morning with a photo, where it's circled, but blurred out. She was quoted in the story as being very embarrassed about it (or something along those lines).

I DVR it every evening, so I can watch in the morning if I fall asleep.

LibraryCin | 11696 comments WOW!!!!

Have to say that I also really liked the American sibling dance couple. I really liked their short program yesterday, as well. Happy to see them get a bronze.

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) | 8422 comments The French couple were fantastic! Way to redeem themselves after their short program kerfuffle. I really love their long program to Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata.

I love the Shibutanis, of course, but I had to root for Scott and Tessa!

message 48: by JoLene (new)

JoLene (trvl2mtns) | 1532 comments I am so bummed. Ice dancing is my favorite. I forgot that “prime time” for Olympic coverage starts at 5, not 8. I tried to set up on my Tivo from my iPad, but I apparently didn’t Press the final button and it didn’t record. I’m hoping that it was rerun in the middle of the night so I can at least see the performances.

message 49: by Elise (new)

Elise (ellinou) YouTube is my friend :D

All the channels showing the Olympics last night were showing the ski halfpipe (at least I got to see Canada win another gold), and by the time they cut to skating it was the start of the third group. I had to go to bed soon since I'm working today, so I just saw another Canadian pair (Piper Gilles and Paul... something).

But I got my good news when I woke up this morning so I'm happy for Scott and Tessa :)

KateNZ | 4100 comments I managed to wrestle the remote off my husband last night and watch some of this - yay! The Canadians' artistic programme had a bit more of the wow factor, I thought - very well deserved win - but the French were beautiful too.
