I'll be finishing Among Thieves today (Sunday) so I'll be starting either this evening or Monday. It's not Farseer, but I'm looking forward to it!

I'll finish Blood of Tyrants and Flame of Sevenwaters today and start this tomorrow. I still have Kushiel's Scion open but I keep avoiding that book - don't know why. I loved the first trilogy but now I keep setting it down so I'll take my time with that at a snail pace. :) Hobb will be a nice diversion. And to be honest, I didn't find Shaman's Crossing to be that bad as everyone seems to say.

I wonder if the problem was that the Farseer/Liveship books are so good this trilogy seemed poor by comparison? I actually enjoyed the first book once I'd got into it and was really rooting for Nevare at the Cavella. I'm looking forward to see what happens next.

I think the reason people don't really warm up to this may be the magic. It is a bit unusual and creepy. That forest woman for instance from book 1 sounds disgusting. I kept trying to picture her and wondering how a man would fall for something like that. Not because of her size but because of the creepy way she was described - I sort of see a kind of monster when I think about her.
I have just finished chapter 5 and need to go find some food. Preferably the tasty savoury kind, wich brings a whole pallete of flavours on the tongue. Boy! The way Nevare gets lost in his food and appreciates it!!!
And it would take a lot of strength to appreciate it that much after (view spoiler)
That being said, I feel really sorry for Nevare. The way he was received home was difficult for me to read. I felt like shouting at those people: Why the hell won't you give him a break! He's just fat for crying out loud! It's not like he sprouted a pair of horns overnight. And the father sending him straight of to (view spoiler)

Some of my thoughts:
The forest woman is frightening (view spoiler) .
I'm fascinated by that business at the Spindle and wonder how that will play out. (As an aside, that stupid boy carving his name on it really infuriated me: I can't bear it when people damage ancient artefacts, whether they're natural wonders or man-made monuments. It's like the people that scratch graffiti inside the burial chambers of the pyramids or break off bits of Stonehenge as souvenirs. I want to shout at them!)
I love the physical pleasure Nevare is getting from food, as well. I think that subtle description is something Hobb does so well. I feel like I need a tray of snacks on hand while reading about it, though! (I only ever have had to fast for one day, and that was enough!)
I hate his father, he's terrible! His refusal to belief that Nevare wasn't responsible for what's happening to him was another thing that made me want to howl; I don't believe someone can be so cold towards their own child.
Chapters 9 & 10: (view spoiler)
Chapter 11 & 12 (view spoiler)

I had the same thoughts about chapters 9 to 12 and I think the father is just twisted because his plans didn't work out. He's a real monster to do all that to his own kids.
And speaking of bad things to come, I have a very strong feeling even Carsina will (view spoiler)
I reached Chapter 19 and find it difficult to set this book down.
I suspected from chapter 12 that (view spoiler)
But now after chapter 18 I wonder (view spoiler)
All in all, I am intrigued and this is keeping me at the edge of the seat.
I hope Nevare will (view spoiler)
And you are right about the troubles Nevare is facing. I'm also expecting a lot more of them after Farseer. And Nevare seems to be so much more unlucky than Fitz.

But if you have other reads planned I'll wait.

The Tree Woman:(view spoiler) .
Ephiny: (view spoiler)
Magic: (view spoiler)
Chapter 20: (view spoiler)
I'm supposed to be reading The Cold Commands with Mayim, but apart from that there's nothing that can't wait. How about we schedule this for next Wednesday? I'd quite like to get this series finished as well; I just hope it ends on a positive note!

Carsina - she already started making trouble for Nevare. I'm expecting a lot more from her.
Next Wednesday is ok for Renegade's Magic. I'll finish my due BRs in between. :)

Chapter 21: (view spoiler)
Chapter 22: (view spoiler)

Damn! It looks like those whistles are exactly what you thought they would be but it's so unfair that (view spoiler)
I worry the same as you. Nevare's absence will deffinitely make rumours grow worse. And I also think he may have to choose between (view spoiler)

Tree Woman (view spoiler)
Nevare's purpose is (view spoiler)
I have a feeling worse is yet to come. (view spoiler)
I really really hope I'm wrong in this! :(
The magic (view spoiler)

Tree Woman

Jodoli
He looks kind of cute.
And from what I understood Nevare is bigger than him.

And this is the only one I found of Nevare

I don't know - it's like Robin Hobb has a mantra 'the hero must suffer in book 2!' Fitz suffered and boy, Nevare has certainly suffered!
I've just finished, so apologies for this being all over the place:
Chapters 27 - 28: (view spoiler)
Chapter 29 - 30: (view spoiler)
Chapters 31 - 34: (view spoiler)
Epiny & Spink: I love these two! I think they're coming up fast as my favourite secondary Robin Hobb characters, along with Patience and Burrich from Farseer (I count the Fool and Nighteyes as main characters). I love how Epiny has such a fiery spirit and a rather eccentric mind as well as being so kind, rather than a horrible spoilt little brat. I hope Epiny manages to have her child safely (I was worried the magic would use her to force Nevare to do what it wanted).
Spink is just brilliant - he is such a good friend to Nevare, even when Nevare tries to push him away. I want to hug them both! I almost want them to turn up in the third book, but given that they think Nevare is dead, I'm not sure that can happen - maybe they should be left in peace to grieve.

We'll leave the next book for Wednesday then? I really want to know how it will end.

I want to know how it ends, too; I hope this won't be the first Robin Hobb book I read with an unhappy ending!
