What is the Pick-It-For-Me Challenge?

The Pick-It-For-Me Challenge (PIFM) is a reading challenge where each participant gives and receives book recommendations based on a given a set of rules. The assignment method and book selection rules change each month so it’s always new and always different.

The idea of the PIFM challenge is that you will get new-to-you books and authors selected for you as well as a push to read some books that have been lingering on your shelves. You may not be interested in the new books recommended, which is why you also get a minimum of four books from your shelf.

You only have to read ONE book to complete this challenge!

After signups are closed, your names and any extra info will go into the super secret PIFM randomizer and it will select someone for you to recommend books to and someone to give you recommendations. This list will be posted along with any specific picking rules for the month.

In order to participate you need to either HAVE YOUR PROFILE SET TO PUBLIC (preferable), or friend the person giving you recommendations. PLEASE NOTE: if you choose to keep your profile private, it is your responsibility to send a friend request to the person picking for you as soon as possible after the matchups are posted. Whether your profile is private or not, it is also very important that your profile be set to receive Private Messages (PMs) in case anyone needs to reach out to you (mods, organizer etc.)

Everything gets done in this thread so be sure to come back often!!!

Repicks:
You can ask for repicks if:
✱ The books picked for you are not yet released.
✱ If you have already read the chosen book(s) and they are on your ‘read’ shelf.
✱ If you did not receive four picks from your ‘to-read’ shelf, with at least one from your preferred shelf.

You may NOT ask for repicks because:
✱ A book is not available at your library.
✱ A genre or author you don’t enjoy.

LaurLa | 5085 comments TIPS TO MAKE THE CHALLENGE ENJOYABLE FOR EVERYONE!

Pickees
✱ To help your picker understand the type of books you like or are currently reading, please make sure your ‘read’ shelf is up to date. You can create shelves for books you DNFed (Did Not Finish) or authors that don’t work for you as well as favorite books and authors. In addition, you might consider updating your profile. You can include info about your favorite books, authors, genres, themes or tropes (or themes/tropes you dislike – i.e. secret baby).
✱ Please do not specify likes/dislikes in the sign-up thread. This information will not be included in the pairings and your pickee may not see your message and does not need to rely on that information when making picks.

Pickers
✱ Please remember this is primarily a romance readers group. Thus, most, if not all, of your picks should be romance. There are various sub genres within the romance category - Contemporary, Historical, Paranormal, Romantic Suspense, Erotica, M/M, Urban Fantasy. If your pickee reads a wide variety, you could add a non-romance as a choice.

✱ Choose at least 4 new titles for your pickee. These can be brand new to them (not found on any of their shelves) or a book found on their shelves if they've never read any of the author's work previously.

A few hints to help with book selection:
Check the book’s publishing date. Select "date pub" from the checkbox selections and save.
Check pickee's personalized shelves, especially their exclusive shelves. A personalized shelf is one the member has created. (e.g., 'to read next', 'favorites' ‘didn’t like’)
Make sure the books you choose are not on their 'read' shelf. Just because it isn't rated doesn't mean it wasn't read.
Look at your pickee's 'read' shelf and see what genres they have recently read or read the most. Reviewing their ‘read’ shelf might help you in choosing something they are interested in reading right now.
✱ If your pickee reads lots of books in a genre you are not familiar with (erotic romance, GLBT, YA, etc.) Contact the Mods or the month's organizer for guidance.
Include a variety of books (e.g., shorter page count, new addition to their 'to-read' shelf, an older book on their 'to-read' shelf) This variety gives your pickee options when choosing the book or books they will be reading this month. Use the sort feature within their shelves to determine date a book was added, published or read; page numbers, ratings, etc.

If you want to volunteer to make repicks:
✱ We love that you want to help out, but please remember those who need picks have been waiting for a long time already. Please only volunteer if you are able to make the repicks within a few hours of the deadline. Thank you!

LaurLa | 5085 comments 🎂🎂February 2018 PIFM - Picking Rules🎂🎂

Most people think of Valentine's Day when they think of February. But there's more to the little month than hearts and flowers. February is also host to the birthdays of two of the earliest US Presidents, Abraham Lincoln and George Washington. In fact, Washington's birthday is a federal holiday in the US and is celebrated on the third Monday of the month. Many think this holiday is President's Day (and it's often listed that way on calendars) since Lincoln was also born in February. But the holiday was established by an Act of Congress to honor George Washington and the name has not legally changed. In spite of that, the day is now more often a commemoration of all US presidents and poor George has lost his special day.

Why, you ask, should you care about this? Well, because Washington's actual birthday is MY birthday, too! February 22. A revered day the world over, I'm sure!

So let's celebrate MY, er, George Washington's Birthday with some facts about the "father of the country."

1. George Washington was the first President of the United States.
He served as president from 1789-1797 and as president was responsible for establishing many of the precedents still used today in the presidency such as the cabinet system and the term Mr. President.
🎂 Recommend a book that is the first in a series or a stand alone book.

2. Washington was the Commander in Chief of the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War leading the US to eventual victory.
In 1976, George Washington was posthumously appointed to General of the Armies of the United States, restoring his position as the highest ranking officer in US history.
🎂 Recommend a book with a military character (current or former) or where some kind of battle takes place. This could be a physical battle between countries, individual or group factions, or non-physical battles that involves war of words (courtroom, business, etc). Or recommend a book with a character who likes to win their battles.

3. George had wooden teeth.
Not really. He did suffer from dental issues for most of his life and had several sets of false teeth made, including a set made from human teeth (eew) but never from wood. Most of his sets were made from ivory.
🎂 Recommend a book where you can see teeth on the cover (human or animal) or a book with a mostly white cover.

4. Washington has been memorialized on coins, dollar bills, monuments, a state, cities and towns.
Oh, and the seat of a nation. There are 31 states who have a town, city or other municipality using a form of Washington's name and there also 31 states that have at least one monument of Washington.
🎂 Recommend a book that has money or a statue on the cover or takes place in a small town. Or recommend a book written by an author with the first or last name of George or Washington or who is from a place called Washington.

5. George says he can't tell a lie.
As a young boy, he was accused of chopping down his father's favorite cherry tree. When asked about it he allegedly stated, "I can't tell a lie, Pa." This story was first shared in a biography of Washington after his death. There has been much debate as to whether the story and George's admission is true. No one has been able to prove or disprove it's veracity, however. One should hope the story about being unable to lie isn't a lie!
🎂 Recommend a book with a tree on the cover or where lying is involved.

6. Washington was born in 1732 in the colony of Virginia
His family was a moderately prosperous family of the Virginia gentry, of "middling rank" rather than one of the leading planter families. He started his career as a surveyor at the age 17 and did this until his military appointment in 1753. Surveying was his passion, however, and he did this off and on until 1799 and was an active member of the Freemasons until his death.
🎂 Recommend a book that takes place in the US south or where a character works with their hands or works outdoors or there is an outdoor scene on the cover.

7. Washington presided over the 1787 Convention that established the US Constitution.
It was his vision that the country needed a strong federal government as a unifying force to bring the states together. This was not a popular position (and still isn't today) but he prevailed and the Constitution was ratified by all 13 colonies.
🎂 Recommend a book with a politician character or a character who works as a government employee (post office, clerks, courts, any military, police, firefighters, park rangers, etc) or is a very persuasive person.

8. George's birthday is February 22.
At the time of his birth, the British empire was using the Julian calendar which places his birthday as February 11, 1731. But with the adoption of the Gregorian calendar in 1752, his birthday is rightfully noted on my birthday, February 22.
🎂 Recommend a book where someone has a birthday or a celebration takes place, has a publish date in February of any year or on the 22nd of any month.

I'm in! I'm kind of torn, but I guess I'll give George a little love and go with (B) George Washington. My first ever research paper was about him when I was in 4th grade, and I then had to read it in front of the whole school at the Washington's Birthday/President's Day assembly. I think I'm still traumatized... =P
