Janice (jamasc) | 59924 comments February 2018 – Be My Twin

Who knew that YLTO had so many sets of twins? It’s a magical place. Madame Tutti Fruiti looked into her crystal ball and divined who those twins are! (See message #2).

The challenge this month is to meet up with your twin, find a book in your chosen genre that you have in common, and read that book together. But wait, we’re not done! You need to discuss the book and see if you and your twin have the same opinions about it, or disagree.

Discussion has an analytical component, and you will be required to state what you liked, disliked, favourite characters, etc. You may hold your discussions in private messages, YLTO Member Zone, Buddy Reads, or you may set up a thread in the Challenges folder.

Reporting:

When you finish the book, head over to the reporting thread. State the book you read, who your twin was, and write a short summary of your assessment of the book.

General Rules:

1. The book may be in any format – hardcover, paperback, ebook, or audiobook.
2. The book may NOT be combined with the Year Long Zany Zodiac Challenge.
3. The book must be read between February 1 to February 28, 2018 (based on your own time zone).
4. The challenge is for one book. You may read more books if you chose, but only the highest scoring book will apply.
5. The book must be 175 pages or more determined by the issue you read. If reading eBook or audiobook page numbers will be determined by the issue that comes up on a Goodreads search.

Janice (jamasc) | 59924 comments If you have your profile set as "private", you may need to send your twin a friend request so you can scour each others' shelves.

message 4: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Awesome challenge, Janice!

Looking forward to discussing a book with you Sandra :D

message 5: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments This is exciting. So are we discussing with our twin in here which books we'd like to read?

Also, for those who don't know, you can use the compare function on your twin's profile which then lists the books you both have shelved. You can even set it to compare tbr, wishlist or owned as well.

message 6: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Hello to in Annerlee! I'll head on over and compare our shelves now and see what I fancy reading and come back and suggest some. That might be a good starting point and we can then whittle it down. Feel free to do the same.

message 7: by Peggy (last edited Jan 24, 2018 01:52AM) (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I sent a pm to Sandra. I figured it's easier for planning, as this thread will overflow with messages and it would be easy to miss something. And you'd have to check all messages to see if there's one from your buddy.

I knew about the compare shelves feature, but didn't see anywhere where I could set it to specific shelves. It just gave me 98 books (which I think is a selection) Sandra and I have in common.

message 8: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Found the shelf settings! Never knew that existed..

It's a great tool for this kind of thing.

Good idea about pm!

message 10: by Rusalka, Moderator (last edited Jan 24, 2018 03:46AM) (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments Woo hooo Naturally occurring triplets! Looking forward to this Casceil and Naomi :)

As we can't send messages to multiple people at once, I think it makes sense if we discuss here (if that's okay with the boss?) in our own thread (I read the instructions eventually). I'll have a squiz at your shelves now. I'd love to stick to my "Own" shelf as sourcing books can take a while down here, but happy to be flexible!

Edit: also I can blame you guys if Lexx gets grumpy if I buy another book lol

message 13: by Lisa (last edited Jan 24, 2018 03:40AM) (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments Jayme, you are my twin! 🙂 I think your profile is set to private so I can't see your shelves at the moment. I have set up a discussion thread in the Challenges folder for us, as I think that will be easier for planning and discussing. https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

message 14: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11638 comments Oh this is going to be fun! I have already compared books with Anna and we have a whopping 72% in common according to GR!

message 15: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11265 comments Since it is February, this challenge should have been called "Be my Valen-twin". :)

message 16: by [deleted user] (new)

This is such an excellent challenge. Thanks to Janice for putting this together!

Margo, just PMed you back and will catch up tonight when home from work.

I know it may be more of a challenge for triplets to find a book in common.

LOL! Love it!

message 19: by KimeyDiann (new)

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments How fun! I've already heard from my twin Sue Q and I'm hoping this challenge will help to drag me out of my reading rut.

message 20: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19171 comments Love this! I already made a thread for our discussion and sent Roz a PM. :) I also did a book comparison and we have a bunch of books that we both want to read! Yay!

message 21: by Debra (new)

Debra (debra_t) | 6542 comments Janice, I'll follow your lead. What way would you prefer to communicate? My profile is not set to private, and we are GR friends.

I've got to remember to come back here, plus look at your shelves. If I'm slacking, send me a message. And if you have seen a book that might work let me know.

Pragya (reviewingshelf) | 4030 comments Such a cool challenge, Janice.

Hey Sirius, I made us a thread https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

message 25: by Tejas Janet (new)

Tejas Janet (tejasjanet) | 3513 comments Hi Cherie! I created a folder for us here... https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

Very fun challenge! Thanks Janice!!!

message 26: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Not sure why that would be a problem Mikayla. When it comes to discussing book choices, we might have to wait a bit for the other to come online and get back to us. As for discussing the book, having a thread set up means you can comment about the book in there using spoilers and the other person will comment when they have got to that point/log in.

message 27: by Mariab (new)

Mariab | 3059 comments @Amanda, I have a thread set for us, Here is the link:

Annerlee | 2871 comments Sarah wrote: "Not sure why that would be a problem Mikayla. When it comes to discussing book choices, we might have to wait a bit.."

I love time differences. It makes buddy reads and topplers feel like relay races. It's awesome that we can share thoughts and ideas across the time zones:-) .

message 30: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19171 comments Roz and I have decided to read The German Girl together. It was pretty easy to choose a book. We had several on both of our TBRs.

message 37: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11265 comments Peggy and I will read Sarah's Key, which is great because it has been in my (our) TBR for ever.

I am also happy to see that many twins will be reading books I have already read, like The Witchfinder's Sister and Behind Her Eyes so I would be picking their threads. :)
