Goodreads Deals just informed me that the price of Cold Welcome by Elizabeth Moon has dropped to $1.99 (US$) for the ebook, expiring in 11 days.

I've been procrastinating getting this book because it seems to be stuck on the planet rather than the Vatta's War books. So now I have it and will likely ignore it until I'm in a strange mood.

Mentioning here assuming there are others who were mildly interested in the book but unwilling to pay the $8.99 or whatever the usual price is.

Don DeBon (dondebon) | 15 comments It is the start to her new series "Vatta's Peace" and if judging by the second book coming out in Feb, the usual price is 14.99. Typical of the big 5, make the e-book more than the paperback to boost print sales. I saw several reviews on amazon complaining that this doesn't answer any questions (after waiting for many years) about the Vatta universe, just adds more to bait you into getting the other books.

For 1.99 I may go for it. For 14.99 never. Even though I loved the Vatta War series.

Lizzie | 303 comments I own the series in hard cover so I did pre-order the hard cover for both. I like printed books. But my eyesight keeps getting worse and my paperwhite is much easier to read. I wish books were like cds, get the electronic version for free when you buy a hard copy (cd).

Agreed! Even the old LPs could be copied onto cassette tapes, losing some fidelity. The closest thing we can do with books involves hours of work scanning pages or typing the words or reading them aloud and recording that. Sigh..... I am grateful that so many of my old favorites are available as ebooks so that I can read without eye strain. Twenty years ago I would have to make do with the large print section of the public library which had a woefully limited selection of Space Opera. Or get a very large magnifying glass!

Lizzie | 303 comments The early 2000s I lived outside of Lake Geneva, WI. The local library was the beneficiary of a trust where they had to use the yearly amount for large print fiction. There wasn't much sci-fi but there were a lot of mysteries. It was so nice to read Grisham, Patterson, Deaver and so forth in large print. My reading printed books is limited to lots of light and not being tired.

It really frustrates me that so many e-books cost more than printed or equal to hard cover. Yet, with an actual kindle ereader device, we can't even see the cover in color.

Indeed the e-book vs print cost is the big 5 trying to shore up print sales and point to the e-books sales decline as proof they were right and e-books are just a 'fad'. They all hate e-books (well any change).

My e-book reader of choice is the original Nook (sometimes called Nook First edition or Nook Classic) with a color touch screen on the bottom and a e-ink on the top. Best of both worlds. While the library software was lacking, there are several nice 3rd party apps that fix that problem (after rooting the device). The other thing I like: a easy to replace battery.

I have several devices, but I keep going back to that one.
