If someone writes a biography of the great man, I hope they'd consider for the title that 'Big Bang Theory' line from Penny, who called Hawking 'The Wheelchair Dude Who Invented Time'. ;-)

Hawking is the oldest person to ever to lived with that condition, so I read.

I saw the movie Theory of Everything, not long ago...found it a very interesting...as I previously knew little of the prof, outside of his professional life.

i did give fair notice of the quality of the joke, knowing full well it was a bad joke, but it's my joke and i will accept responsibility for it and claim copyright on it as i feel it may mature with age, and if treated appropriately will one day attain the grade of 'hilarious'! :)

day job? i'm the captain of the cavalry, i'm the queen of outer space - on a job share basis! :)

Val H. | 22152 comments I was saddened to hear of the death this week of crime writer Peter Temple. I've always considered him one of Australia's best writers, not just a crime writer, so I was surprised to find out he was a South African who migrated here in 1980 aged 34. He was the first Australian writer to win the British Gold dagger award (with The Broken Shore. He is probably best known for his Jack Irish books which were televised with Guy Pearce playing the lead character. Pure gold Australiana. Temple was a bit of a character himself. I liked this quote:

At one festival appearance Temple was asked whether anything was taboo in crime writing. He said it was fine to boil a baby and eat it with truffles, but the real taboo was harming the family pet.

“Stay out of the black and into the red - there's nothing in this game for two in a bed" ... “Oooh bad luck! - let's look at what you could have won”

I'm still laughing over the couple who lived in a High Rise Block of Flats who won the grand prize of Decking plus a BBQ and Patio Furniture Set! ;o>

he would have lived a lot longer if they'd realized it was only his chair batteries that had gone flat, before the cremation.

Tim Franklin | 10953 comments Nokie Edwards - guitarist with 60s instrumental band The Ventures, died on March 12th.

Today has been reported the death of Dale Winton, aged just 62. I wasn't a fan or anything, but always sad when someone dies young.

message 63: by suzysunshine7 (new)

suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments I'm not really into celebrities but I rather liked Dale Winton as he seemed to be a genuinely nice person in real life as well as onscreen.

There is much speculation going on about why and how he died, including mention of a Police Investigation, and his best friend for almost 50 years has said that he has been in a very bad place for a very long time now - which just saddens me so much to hear ;o<

RIP x Dale x

Val H. | 22152 comments Although I'm not into electronica/house/dance/trance (sorry, I can't even tell them apart), I was exposed to a lot of it in the noughties because of my son's interest. So I was sad to hear of the very young death of DJ Avicii (Tim Bergling) at 28.

He was part of the soundtrack of many loud parties at our house. It's always sad when fame exhorts a heavy price.

Tim Franklin | 10953 comments Just heard of the recent death (May 13) of Glenn Branca, from throat cancer, aged 69.

Born in 1948, Glenn spent the early 70s working in experimental theatre before moving to New York in 1977 where he got involved in the 'no wave' scene. He then began composing large scale works for massed guitars, including 16 symphonies. Quite a few people who became famous in their own right passed through the ranks of Branca's guitar orchestra, including Lee Ranaldo and Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth, and Michael Gira of Swans.

nocheese | 6824 comments This isn't the usual type of post for this thread, but seems the best place to put it.

Many exiles will remember Mark Kibble from the days of the Amazon Music Forum. I'm sad to say that he passed away on 3rd June, having struggled with health issues over a number of years.

He was one of those who left 'zon a while back, in the wake of the onslaught of the trolls, but he was a regular presence on Facebook, and posted about his health tribulations with unfailing wit and good humour. I shall miss the old bugger.

message 86: by suzysunshine7 (new)

suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments This is exactly what this Thread is for, nocheese ... x ... all who are gone yet not forgotten ... x

And I am so sorry to hear of the sad loss of a dear friend to you ;o<

I don't think I ever posted alongside Mark? - but I do recognise his name from the Amazon Forums and I distinctly remember reading quite a few of his very early Posts whilst having some of my leisurely nightly wanderings around the much older and the long since abandoned Threads.

May he rest in peace now ... x

message 87: by Lez (new)

Lez | 7490 comments Sorry to hear about Mark. I met him several times at PPUs and though he was always struggling with ill health, he kept his sense of humour and was unfailingly kind.

message 88: by Val (new)

Val H. | 22152 comments Thanks for letting us know nc. Mark was one of the first posters I "met" when I moved from Zon US to Zon UK. He was unfailingly helpful with technical issues about downloading, burning, sending .mp3 files, etc. And, of course he co-ordinated the distribution of CD compilations for each PPU. I've still got at least four of Mark's CDs dating back to 2011. He loved his classic rock - and especially Stackridge. He was one of the first to sign up for my Aussie Rules tipping competition and he chose to support my team, the Bombers (for reasons best not detailed here!). I never met him, although I did get to see the photos from the early PPUs. He just seemed the nicest man and I know how hard he battled with his COPD, the devices, the medications, the hospital visits and stays. If you are in touch with his family, please let them know that he is fondly remembered by many of us. Goodbye Mark and thank you.

message 89: by nocheese (new)

nocheese | 6824 comments A lovely tribute, Val. What I remember best are his contributions to 'Hard;' Greysuit has been posting his 'murder mysteries' on FB. They were collaborations in that we all contributed the characters, but the narratives were all his. Schiz has posted a Stackridge track as a tribute.
I'm not personally in touch with his family, but Tommo is, and I will pass on people's wishes via him.

message 90: by Val (new)

Val H. | 22152 comments Thanks nc. Please say hello also to Schiz and Tommo if they remember me.

message 91: by Derek (new)

Derek W | 1365 comments Only met Mark the once at the special PPU up Tamworth way but as a fellow Stackridge fan we communicated quite a bit on the forums. A truly nice man who will be much missed. Nocheese, please ask Tommo to pass on my condolences to his family.

theDuke | 6492 comments My condolences to those that knew Mark Kibble. I don't recall that I had any conversations with him, but then..whilst I had been posting on the deals forum since 2011, I wasn't posting on the music forums, until late 2015, cos I didn't know they existed then. I presume Mark left the forums sometime before I 'appeared'.

RIP Mark Kibble.

Val H. | 22152 comments Re Mark Kibble and the PPUs. I hope no one minds but I've uploaded two photos (on my profile) from a couple of the PPUs. Anyone who wants to out themselves can. That's Mark in the back row in black and wearing glasses in the group shot. I have heaps of photos - all sent to me by Mark. Not many of the old posters left here but I think Lez and Foe make an appearance in some of them.

message 96: by Martin (new)

Martin O' | 2196 comments Like Duke I never had the pleasure of making his acquaintance but by all accounts from those who did, judging by the comments above I missed out. Anyway such is life so to Mark, wherever he is, Bon Voyage!

I sailed an ocean, unsettled ocean
Through peaceful waters and deep commotion
Often frightened, unenlightened
Sail on, sail on, sailor
I wrest the waters, fight Neptune's waters
Sail through the sorrows of life's marauders
Unrepenting, often empty
Sail on, sail on, sailor
Caught like a sewer rat alone but I sail
Bought like a crust of bread, but oh do I wail
Seldom stumble, never crumble
Try to tumble, life's a rumble
Feel the stinging, I've been given
Never ending, unrelenting
Heartbreak searing, always fearing
Never caring, persevering
Sail on, sail on, sailor
I work the seaways, the gale-swept seaways
Past ship wrecked daughters of wicked waters
Uninspired, drenched and tired
Wail on, wail on, sailor
Always needing, sometimes bleeding
Never feeding all my feelings
Damn the thunder, must I blunder
Stop the crying and the lying
And the sighing and my dying
Sail on, sail on, sailor
Sail on, sail on, sailor
(The Beach Boys)
