Hello Blue Team! Welcome to your 1st read-a-thon of 2018! This topic is just for you to discuss your strategy and progress throughout the week. Make sure to take a moment to read over the rules of the challenge here before you dive in.

It is also helpful, before getting too far into the challenge, for someone to take on the role of Team Leader. This person will keep the team updated on progress throughout the week so they'll need to check in more regularly. If you're interested in taking on that role, please let the team know.

Claire | 52 comments Hi all, I just joined the challenge. Curious to hear everyone’s plan.
I am no good for a capitain, but I am allways willing to help.
Looking forward to get to know you.

Kathy Jo (kjsotr) | 304 comments Hello!
This is my first time participating in a read-a-thon and I am pretty excited!
Also, a little confused. Maybe it is because I am using my iPad, but I don't see the top shelves.

Anyway, I am an Occupational Therapist who lives in Indiana. I have a twelve year old son who loves to read, a husband who doesn't read much but an occasional history book, and a yellow lab who is really cute but too dumb to read.

message 4: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (girlvsbook) | 1173 comments Welcome Claire! Welcome Kathy!

Just to clarify, Kathy, are you saying you don't see the top shelves for the book you're reading/wanting to read or you can't find the list of shelves we're playing the game with?

message 5: by Kathy Jo (new)

Kathy Jo (kjsotr) | 304 comments I can't see the shelves for the books. I use to see it, but it looks different now.

message 6: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (girlvsbook) | 1173 comments Hmm, not sure if that is an iPad thing or not? What book are you looking at?

message 7: by Tracy (new)

Tracy (tracyisreading) | 2573 comments It might be the app?

message 8: by Kathy Jo (new)

Kathy Jo (kjsotr) | 304 comments I figured it out! When using safari, there is an option to "switch to desktop". That fixed it!
Thanks!

Michelle (girlvsbook) | 1173 comments Anyone want to volunteer as Tribute, er, I mean Team Lead?

message 11: by Debra (last edited Jan 27, 2018 07:45PM) (new)

Debra Barstad Hi all I'm not a newbie but not sure I would make a good team captain either. so for this read-a-thon I want to knock off some of my books for the ATY challenge so to start I would like to read the following books
The Man Who Was Thursday A Nightmare by G.K. Chesterton - classic, mystery, United Kingdom
2. Finding Cinderella (Hopeless, #2.5) by Colleen Hoover romance
3. Outside (Outside #1) by Shalini Boland distopian
4. The Short Life of Sparrows by Emm Cole fantasy
5. Dying To Forget (The Station #1) by Trish Marie Dawson young adult
6. Thaw by Bryan Dunn Horror
7. We Need to Talk About Kevin by Lionel Shriver fiction, book club, favorites, crime, and others

so I am open for discussions on this list

message 12: by Jillian (last edited Jan 29, 2018 07:07AM) (new)

Jillian | 2891 comments These are the three books I am likely to finish with all the possible tags though I may have missed some of the tags.

The Two Towers (The Lord of the Rings, #2) by J.R.R. Tolkien The Two Towers/J.R.R. Tolkien
(have, series, 5 star, favorite, adventure, fantasy, fiction, sci-fi, young adult, audiobook, kindle, paperback, 2016,2017,2018)

Throne of Jade (Temeraire, #2) by Naomi Novik Throne of Jade/Naomi Novik- I'm thinking the China tag would be best for this one.
(currently reading, own, reviewed, to buy, adventure, fantasy, historical, sci-fi, young adult, borrowed, kindle, library, China, 2016, 2017)

Journey to the Center of the Earth (Extraordinary Voyages, #3) by Jules Verne Journey to the Center of the Earth/Jules Verne
(book club, tbr, adventure, fantasy, historical, sci-fi, young adult, audiobook, kindle, France, 2016, 2017, 2018)

message 13: by Samantha (new)

Samantha (sgiffin) | 146 comments Hi everyone. After an initial run through the top shelves for the books I have on hand for this read-a-thon, I have determined that all of my books can fit into at least 10 shelves, and that the only type of shelf that I can't seem to fit are the Location Shelves , except Australia. So if any of you have books that fit there, shout them out because that looks to be the hardest shelf set (based on my limited experience of 12 books).

message 14: by Tracy (new)

Tracy (tracyisreading) | 2573 comments I volunteer as tribute!!!!!!
( what the hell do I have to do?)

message 15: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (girlvsbook) | 1173 comments Very ambitious, Debra!

I am going to try and get four books done this week which, for me, is a stretch. I will for sure be reading...

Dark Matter by Blake Crouch

Michelle (girlvsbook) | 1173 comments Thank you, Tracy! :D

All you need to do is sort of track the group's progress as we finish books. You can do that here in this topic or, in the past, people have made spreadsheets (if that's your thing). However you're most comfortable organizing is totally up to you. :)

message 17: by Jillian (new)

Debra Barstad possible books for location
Mother Night- Germany
Everyone Burns- Thailand
Heart of Darkness- Africa
Freezing Point- Antarctica
Snow Flower and the Secret Fan- China, Asia

message 21: by Jill (new)

Jill | 725 comments Thanks for volunteering Tracy!
I am for, sure going to get through three books in the next week but am hoping for four.
The threes that I will start with:
The Distant Hours
(Abandoned, book-club, book-I-own, currently-reading, did-not-finish, TBR, to-buy, gothic, historical, romance, arc, audiobook, 2016, 2017)
Behold the Dreamers
(Africa, book-club, contemporary, own, maybe, kindle)
What We Saw at Night
(Young-adult, mystery, contemporary, series, romance, adventure, want, library, own, 3-stars, kindle)

message 22: by Debra (new)

Debra Barstad Maybe we need to try and tackle the harder shelves first such as the location one than work to the easier ones. for example
Jill has the book Behold the Dreamers which is Africa
Jillian has the book Throne of Jade which is China

this is just a suggestion by no means am I telling people what to read

message 23: by Tracy (new)

Tracy (tracyisreading) | 2573 comments Emm - are the shelves worth different amounts of points? Once everyone checks in , I can sort out whose books we can use for what. I agree with the strategy of if you have a location shelf available we should definitely use it. Good teamwork so far 😊. Working off my app right now so I can’t see everything, but will check in tomorrow morning first thing online. I’m starting off with Starvation Heights since I’ll have at least 125 pages left tomorrow.

message 24: by Michelle (last edited Jan 27, 2018 09:02PM) (new)

Michelle (girlvsbook) | 1173 comments No point values, Tracy. The object of the game is to just to check off as many shelves as possible. The team who reads the most shelves will be the winner. There are 81 shelves and 12 of us. We would each have to read 6+ books to read every shelf which is not likely. It wasn't designed for teams to read all the shelves. :)

So, yes, it is important to try and knock out some of the harder shelves if we can but I don't want everyone to panic or read books they have no desire to read just to squeeze in tougher shelves. Even if we all read 5 books this week (again, not likely) there would be 21 shelves that didn't get read.

So lets knock out the harder ones where/when we can and just have some fun! :D

I have some books on my ATY Challenge that would work for some of the harder shelves so I don't have a problem reading them to knock those out.

message 25: by Tracy (new)

Tracy (tracyisreading) | 2573 comments Perfect. I say we all check in with the books we think we can get done and what shelves they can be used for as people are already doing and we can puzzle it out from there.

message 26: by Michelle (last edited Jan 27, 2018 09:29PM) (new)

Michelle (girlvsbook) | 1173 comments For a separate challenge, I have to finish Dark Matter by January's end. But after I finish it, I'm open to reading something for a harder shelf. These are some possibilities for me. I underlined what I thought might be harder shelves.

Jill | 725 comments I was going to try to finish The Girl Who Played with Fire tonight but I am only 70% done. I can stop reading now and finish it tomorrow. That way this book can cover the Europe location shelf.

message 28: by Veronica (new)

Veronica (ronireads13) | 816 comments Thanks Captain Tracy!
Here are the two I am certain I can read and the categories they fit:
The Maze Runner
(abandoned, book-club, series, currently-reading, book-i-own, have, did-not-finish, tbr, 4-stars, 5-stars, adventure, sci-fi, audiobook, kindle, 2016, 2017)
The Keeper of Lost Things
(2018-reading-challenge, book-club, books-i-own, abandoned, currently-reading, did-not-finish, own, reviewed, stand-alone, wishlist, contemporary, cover-love, mystery, romance, 2017, 2018

If I can manage it, my third book will be The Good Earth
(Abandoned, book-club, currently-reading, own, series, to-buy, wishlist, fiction, audiobook, kindle, library, asia, china, 2016, 2017)

There may be more categories that I missed for them but those are the ones I found.

You're welcome. I'm not sure what I just did to myself, lol. Doesn't seem hard though :-)

Tracy (tracyisreading) | 2573 comments Good morning Blue Team☀️

What books are everyone starting today?

I'm finishing up Starvation Heights: A True Story of Murder and Malice in the Woods of the Pacific Northwest. I have 208 pages that I didn't get to last night. It's about the craziest thing I've ever read. I think I'm going to put it under the True-Crime shelf.

CRAZY!!!😱

message 31: by Debra (new)

Debra Barstad The Man Who Was Thursday: A Nightmare
fits for the United Kingdom shelf

message 32: by Kathy Jo (new)

Kathy Jo (kjsotr) | 304 comments I started The House of Seven Gables last night, but it seems pretty slow. It would probably be the only book I read. So I am going to put it on hold for the time being and move on to the next 2 books on my list. Luckily, they are YA books that should go fast! I looked at tags last night, so let me double check this morning if they have location tags,

Esperanza Rising- books-I-own, historical, young adult, 2016, 2017.

The Plot to Kill Hitler- biography, nonfiction

I'm sure I can get to those 2, not sure where I will go after that.

message 33: by Tracy (new)

Tracy (tracyisreading) | 2573 comments We have a good list going so far. Just waiting on a few more members to check in. I have a party to take my girls to today, but will work on some sort of tracking system we all can see and post it tonight.

I've just started Dracula, which I feel like I'm going to get through pretty quickly, and I also started listening to Born a Crime: Stories From a South African Childhood yesterday, and am already a third of the way through, so I might tackle Mt. Edited: Scrap that as I had the dates wrong ... I thought it started on Friday.

Kathy Jo (kjsotr) | 304 comments Overdrive is out for me too! Boohoo, I was going to download an audiobook to listen to as I do some cooking/ meal prep. Maybe it will come back up soon.

Esperanza Rising can be used for Mexico and the Plot to Kill Hitler for Geemany.

Jody (jodybell) | 3477 comments I really have no idea why I had it in my head that it started Friday. 🙄 Combination of bad eyesight and being non compos mentis - one or the other of those generally accounts for the majority of my failures.

Claire | 52 comments I will finish Jane Eyre tomorrow. Have a birthday party for children in an hour, so will only be reading in a few hours again.

message 44: by Jill (new)

Jill | 725 comments I am going to finish The Girl Who Played with Fire today. I have about 200 pages left. That can go on the Europe shelf.
I am going to start The Distant Hours today. Lots of shelves it can go on, maybe gothic would be the best shelf.

message 45: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 2891 comments After seeing what everyone is posting I'm thinking the tag "have" will be the best for this book. (I don't see this tag on anyone else's list).

I'm hoping to be finished by either today or tomorrow (luckily this audio book sounds good at 1.5 speed which will keep me company while I clean today).

Are you listening to the Rob Inglis version? I listened to all three last year, and he was a wonderful narrator, but oh my God, the songs. 😩

message 49: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 2891 comments Jody- That is the version I am listening to. I don’t remember all the songs when I read it 10 years ago but they definitely stand out on the audiobook.

Samantha (sgiffin) | 146 comments Today I will be finishing the last 195 pages of Something Rotten which can fit many shelves, but I think might be best for 'Favorite-Authors' which seems to be a rarer shelf.

I'm also going to try to finish Twist of Faith which can fit any of the following: 'Currently-Reading', 'Mystery', 'Kindle', '2018', 'fiction', 'contemporary', 'have', 'favorite'
